Jedis, Pirates and Extended Family! A May/June 2012 TR Update: Lunch @ H&V

Okay way back when I last updated we were headed into the Darth Mall to escape the rain.

A view of Tower of Terror you don't see everyday...
meganspics037-1.jpg

We entered the Darth Maul merchandise tent and began looking around. There was so much to look at! Rows and rows of t-shirts, collectibles and toys. Anthony was in heaven! We knew we wanted to get name tags with our names in Aurebesh (Star Wars language.) We ordered those and looked around some more. Anthony picked out two Vinylmations and I got an Ewok shirt. When my sister and her family got off TOT they joined us in the store and we got into the character meet and greet line.

The characters that meet inside the merchandise tent are Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. The three of them rotate so it is difficult to time all three. When we got in line Luke was out but after about 10 minutes a CM announced that in 10 minutes Luke was leaving and Leia would be out. We probably waited about 35 minutes in this line before it was our turn.

For a kid who doesn't like princesses he sure looks happy...
Photo1097FourBySix-1.jpg

After our meeting with the princess we headed outside and lo and behold the rain was letting up! :cool1: We decided to hang out in the Backlot Area to see if any characters started doing meet and greets again. We got into the Fett line (Boba and Jango rotate) because we saw CMs standing there and we assumed that meant one of them would be coming out. Well we saw Boba walk out and then walk right back in! We decided to hang around the area to see what was going on.

Oh no! He's been captured!
meganspics044-1.jpg

While we were hanging out in the Fett line Chad said, "wow look over there." There was a family and I'm not sure how many people were in it all we saw was the dad yell something like, "this is unacceptable" except in a few choice words involving a farm animal. Then he threw his backpack into the fence! Then we heard him yell again and slam his backpack on the ground before walking away. Chad said, "I guess he's not having a magical day." I felt bad because obviously something must have gone awry for him to react like that but geez.:faint:

Now here is where we ran into some serious good luck with characters. After about 20 minutes CMs started letting families backstage to a set up rain location. Families were let back one at at time so we got a private meeting with Boba Fett. He has always been my brother's favorite but my brother wouldn't get in the picture.

meganspics046-1.jpg

Photo1125FourBySix-1.jpg

After meeting Boba Fett we went back out front and got in Darth Maul's line. There were only a few families ahead of us and soon we were brought backstage again to meet Darth Maul. I guess because the characters weren't out front people didn't realize that meet and greets were happening so the lines were short.

Anthony kept his distance and I can't say I blame him. Darth Maul was a little scary!
Photo1134FourBySix-1-1.jpg

While my sister and her family were getting their picture with Darth Maul we saw Zam Wessell walking out. I had to ask my brother who she was but my niece was super excited there was another girl to meet. My BIL was pretty excited to meet her too...:rolleyes1

meganspics056-1.jpg

While we were meeting characters my brother went and got himself a SWW drink. It was called "The Force" and was basically a white russian with blue curacao.
meganspics057-1.jpg

We walked over towards the Streets of America where the Jedi Council was meeting. When we walked over there we saw Anakin walking towards his meet and greet spot and hopped in line. In about 20 seconds we were the first family to get an autograph and pictures.

Photo1166FourBySix-1.jpg

Photo1170FourBySix-1.jpg

Since we were having such good luck with characters we walked over to where the Clone Wars characters (Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Ahsoka Tano and Asajj Ventress) were rotating. When we walked up to the line it was about a 15 minute wait and Commander Cody was out. As soon as we got in line they announced that Captain Rex would be meeting soon and Commader Cody would be going in after 10 minutes. We would just miss getting a picture with both of them but that was ok. Captain Rex is Anthony's favorite character so we couldn't wait to see his reaction when Captain Rex showed up.

While waiting in line Captain Rex came walking right past us to go the meet and greet area. Anthony was in awe. When he walked past us I said, "Anthony show him your shoes." Anthony did and Captain Rex saluted him! Anthony started jumping up and down and said, "Did you see that?"

When it was our turn for pictures Anthony rushed ahead of everyone to show Captain Rex his shoes again.

Photo1174FourBySix-1.jpg

Photo1176FourBySix-1.jpg

After Captain Rex got pictures with my sister's family he turned and pointed back to Anthony and saluted him again. Anthony was on :cloud9:. He could not stop beaming.

We found a Clone Trooper wondering around and stopped him for a picture. I noticed that the roaming characters were really good about stopping for children but when my sister tried to stop one he blew her off! The roaming characters are trained to not let lines form but I was happy that they were stopping for the kids.

meganspics059-1.jpg

We met all these characters in the span of an hour and 20 minutes. I thought that was pretty good especially with all the horror stories I had read before we left about crowds during SWW. Granted the rain really thinned the crowds but still we had perfect timing on a few lines.

The last thing on our agenda for the day was to find a Jawa. I had read that you could trade them junk and we tried to find something quickly. Chad handed Anthony an old arcade card to trade.

meganspics074-1.jpg

meganspics075-1.jpg

The Jawa traded Anthony a Subway card! Anthony thought this was hilarious. He said trading the Jawa was one of his favorite parts of the trip. It was time for us to head out now because we had a dinner ADR. Since this was my sister's last day her family stayed later but my brother was ready to go. I could not believe how things worked out for my brother. He hates hot weather and crowds but the day he went it rained which not only helped with crowds but cooled everything off. He really could not have picked a more perfect day for him to go to a park. So that was my brother's pixie dust of the trip! :wizard:

I feel so bad for all the people that this was their only day at SWW. I really hope they were able to get stuff done towards the end of the day when the rain let up. I really think Disney could have set up more rain area meet and greets for this event. The only characters that I saw with a rain location were the Fetts and Darth Maul. Darth Vader continued meet and greets too because his location was covered. I understand the characters can't meet in the rain but they could maybe utilize the Animation Building or something for this situation.:confused3

Even though it rained on us we still had a great day! Now it was time to go pick up Tessa and head to dinner and which was one of our best meals of the trip.

Use the force!

Dinner at Kona

Great update Megan!

I can't believe how many characters Anthony got to meet! That's so awesome! What an amazing day for him.

I can't wait to hear about your dinner!

How's school going for you guys? Everyone getting adjusted?

Shannon, what a positively brilliant solution to the problem! You are amazing!!! I'm so glad that Maddie is doing better. I think those hallways and the confusion are very scary. They have the three kindergarten classes at Willow's school in a different building (the school is a campus of multiple buildings), and they go to lunch separately and have a separate playground - I'm really glad because it seems like a gentler way to ease them into "real school."

Thank you so much. You are so sweet.

I really wish that Maddie's school was more like Willow's. That sounds just perfect for the kindergarteners. I am sure that Miss Willow is positively thriving in her new school! :goodvibes

WOW! Y'all really met a lot of characters! :thumbsup2 Reid would be so jealous that y'all met Boba Fett - he loves him. :rotfl: And that interaction with Captain Rex was too cool! You are really making me want to go to SWW more & more. I'm pretty definite that will be our trip for 2014.

Another great update! I can't believe how many characters you met!!!

I have to admit though - I love SW, but I have never really seen the "new" movies (the prequels) - I tried to watch one of them, but, well, um :confused3. So I don't know who half of those characters are! :rotfl2:

Thanks Shannon!

He got to meet a lot of characters & fast! It was definitely some pixie dust after all the rain. Anthony had a blast!

We have finally adjusted to school. Anthony & Tessa are actually happy when they get dropped off now which is always a good thing.:goodvibes I hope Maddie is doing well too.

Yes we did meet a lot of characters! SWW is a lot of fun, I'm sure Reid would love it!

Thanks! We had a lot of great character luck!

:rotfl2: that's ok. I don't like the prequels at all! I don't know a lot about Clone Wars either but Anthony keeps me informed.

Love this so far!!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you are reading along.:goodvibes

I have been trying to work on an update for two days but Photobucket isn't working:confused3 So I am devoting today to getting caught up with you ladies TRs/PTRs! :cool1: Thanks for continuing to read along!

After we picked up Tessa we headed over to the Polynesian for our dinner ADR at Kona Cafe.

I needed to try the famous Lapu Lapu!

DSCN1659-2.jpg

Lapu Lapu - Myers's Dark Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, sweet and sour mix, topped with Bacardi 151 rum floated on the top.

I thought this drink was really good and you gotta love a drink served in a pineapple!

Even the kids' drinks were cute.
DSCN1660-2.jpg

Kona's bread was brought out with our drinks.
DSCN1661-2.jpg

This was hands down the best bread and butter I have ever had. And I have had A LOT of bread and butter. I am the Queen of Carboholics. I think I could have just eaten this and had the Lapu Lapu and been happy!

We also got an order of the Sticky Wings For Two - Glazed Chicken Wings with tangy Mustarad Drizzle and Toasted Sesame Seeds $12.99
DSCN1664-2.jpg

These were absolutely delicious! Definitely worth the out of pocket price.

For my entree I ordered the Shrimp and Scallops - panko breaded shrimp and pan-seared scallops with sticky rice and ponzu, spicy guava-passion fruit and wasabi cream sauces $20.99A
DSCN1665-2.jpg

These were okay. I was pretty full by this point anyways but I was underwhelmed. I probably wouldn't order them again but it definitely wasn't bad.

Tessa got the Grilled Chicken Strips - served with macaroni topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella served with veggies and fruit salad.
DSCN1666-2.jpg

Anthony got the kid's cheeseburger with I think a fruit salad.
DSCN1668-2.jpg

and Chad got the winning dish - Teriyaki-style New York Strip - sirloin strip grilled with pineapple teriyaki glaze served with sticky rice and stir-fried broccolini $28.99
DSCN1667-2.jpg

This was soooo good. I don't really eat red meat very often but I would order this next time. The pineapple glaze with the sticky rice was to die for! Chad said this is his favorite meal he has ever had a Disney.

Even though we were about to burst we had to order dessert. We were on the DDP after all...

I ordered the Kilauea Torte - An explosion of warm liquid Chocolate inside Chocolate Cookie Volcano
DSCN1669-2.jpg

This was amazing. :worship:

Chad ordered the Kona Kone.
DSCN1670-2.jpg

He wasn't real impressed. He ordered it just because there was nothing else he wanted and he doesn't really like dessert (yes, he is weird.) Next time I would have him get a Kilauea Torte too so I could have two.:rolleyes1

The kid's got to build their own sundaes.
DSCN1671-2.jpg

Kona was our favorite dinner of the trip. I would definitely recommend giving Kona a try. I'm sure we will be back! :thumbsup2

When we got back to the hotel that night our stuffed friends had been having some fun.
DSCN1674-2.jpg

DSCN1675-2.jpg

We watched the Duffy bedtime story then it was lights out! We still had two full days left at Disney!

Saturday at SWW

Saturday morning we headed over for our second full day at Star Wars Weekend. This time Princess Tessa would be joining us as well.:thumbsup2 We got to the park right after 730 and the turnstiles were already open.

We're ready!
DSCN1677-1.jpg

Stormtroopers opening the park.
DSCN1681-1.jpg

Our goal for the morning was to meet Chewbacca. We headed straight over and I started the line to meet him while Chad went to get TSM FPs. We thought he would be coming out at 9 but it turns out he wasn't starting meet and greets until 930. Chad and I took turns taking the kids to do things while we waited. These included bathroom breaks, riding Star Tours, and a fight with Darth Vader.
Photo1250FourBySix-1.jpg

After our long wait it was time to meet Chewy!

Photo1261FourBySix_zpsd1ead63c-1.jpg

After meeting Chewbacca we checked out the Clone Wars line which didn't open until 945. We learned that Commander Cody would be out first. Anthony told us he HAD to meet him so we waited.;)

Anthony the action figure!
DSCN1694-2.jpg

Can I have your autograph?
DSCN1698-1.jpg

Next we headed over to Toy Story Mania.
DSCN1682-1.jpg

After our TSM spin we were on a hunt for more characters. Chad went to check out the Jedi Council line while Anthony, Tessa and I went to meet Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc. Monsters Inc is Tessa's favorite movie so I thought she *might* take a picture with them. When it was our turn only Mike was out.
Photo1273FourBySix_zps0c5de8e1-1.jpg

Photo1281FourBySix_zps92b8b819-1.jpg

Tessa didn't cry when she saw Mike but she still wouldn't go near him. That's a win for us!

We met back up with Chad and got in the Jedi Council line. When we made it to the front Shaak-Ti was out. I have no idea who she is but Anthony told me she is a Jedi with a blue lightsaber.
DSCN1703-1.jpg

Next we probably grabbed some drinks and took the kids to the bathroom. Then we tried to formulate a plan. The annoying thing about meeting characters at SWW is that the lines rotate so it takes some planning to get the characters you want. Anthony wanted to meet Kit Fisto (another Jedi from the prequels.) He rotates with Shaak-Ti and Anakin who had both been out already so we figured he had to be out soon. We asked the handlers of the Jedi Council line when Kit Fisto would be out. They told us he would be out in about 20 minutes so we got back in line. When we were getting close to the front Anakin was still out. I told a different handler we were told Kit would be out and he said yes in 5 minutes. We let a few famillies in front of us who wanted to meet Anakin. *Some of the lines let you do this, others don't.* Well Kit Fisto still wasn't coming out so I went and asked another handler when he would be out. He said to just stay in line. I think the handlers were getting tired of me!:rotfl2: So our turn came and Shaak-Ti comes around the corner. We turned to let people in front of us but Shaak-Ti informed us that Kit is there and so is Anakin!
Photo1293FourBySix_zps55ed2471-1.jpg

We got to take a picture with all three of them which was pretty cool. When Anthony met Kit Fisto, Shaak-Ti informed him that Anthony had been looking and waiting on him.:thumbsup2
Photo1299FourBySix_zpsfdc9ce44-1.jpg

After our good fortune with the Jedi Council we headed back over to the Clone Wars line. (I am tired just writing this!) The only character in that line Anthony really wanted to meet was Ahsoka who was meeting at 1140. We took a look at the line and we knew there was no way we would meet her because the line was too long and she would have rotated by the time it was our turn. Her next time wasn't until 440 so we decided to try and meet her later.

We were all H-O-T and tired. It was around 11:30 and we were ready for a break. Our lunch ADR wasn't until 12:30 but we decided to check and see if we could check in early and then go take an afternoon break.

Lunch at Hollywood and Vine

Sounds like you really enjoyed Kona! I have read so many positive reviews of this place. I have NO idea why it doesn't appeal to me. I think it's that I don't really like sweet mixed with savory - pineapple in savory dishes makes me :scared: - I think that's the turn off for me. :confused3 But everyone really seems to love it!

Next time I would have him get a Kilauea Torte too so I could have two.
This totally cracked me up!

Okay, I did enjoy the SWW update, but I have to admit that I don't know ANY of those prequel characters. :rotfl2: However, I LOVED the Chewie pics. :lovestruc

Sounds like a great couple of days at SWW!! Love the Chewy pictures! I'm with Roni though, I have no idea who those people are. :rotfl: Anakin and Chewbacca are the only two names I recognize.

Kona looks great! I'll have to add that one to the ever-growing list of possibilities! If you're the Queen of Carbs, can I be the princess? Can't get enough.

Mmmmm......Kona! We had dinner there last year & really enjoyed it! That bread is soooo delicious! Ed had that steak & he thought it was great, too.

WOW! Y'all were really getting some character meet & greets done at SWW! :thumbsup2 Is that the main draw/attraction of SWW? Or are there other special Star Wars things that go on?

Don't worry, you are not alone! Chad didn't know some of them either & heck, I was stumped on a few too! Meeting Chewie was great!

:rotfl2: Yes the prequel characters are def more obscure. I kind of wonder why they have so many versus not so many from the original movies. I guess because the Clone Wars on Cartoon Network is still going on. :confused3

Kona is sooo good! You can definitely be the Carb Princess!

Kona was great! I'm glad you all enjoyed it too.:goodvibes

The character meet & greets were the main draw for Anthony but there is a lot of stuff we missed out on that goes on during SWW.

There are a few shows that go on, I know one is centered around Clone Wars (the Cartoon Network show). The biggest show we missed out on though is Hyperspace Hoopla which is at the end of the day & the Star Wars characters put on a dance competition. Jedi Training is expanded & there is also Padawan Mind Challenge where kids get to answer trivia about the movies for a prize. Anthony was more interested in JTA so we didn't sign up for that.

There are also celebrity autograph sessions by certain actors from the films which are very popular but Anthony doesn't care about that just yet. The exclusive merchandise is a big deal to a lot of collectors. And the parade is awesome!

Thank you so much for this info! I was thinking of doing our 2014 trip around SWW. But, I think I'll have to see how much deep interest Reid has in it then. It may be enough to still go at that time but not spend a lot of days in DHS. He would enjoy that Hyperspace Hoopla show!

I'm glad I could help! I think it's a good idea to wait and see how into Star Wars he is in a few years.

My biggest disappointment was that we missed Hyperspace Hoopla. We had dinner reservations every night but one and that day we ended up not going to DHS at all. I wish we could have seen the show. The other big thing we missed was Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy in their Star Wars outfits. Their line was always crazy and they weren't out at all on Friday that we saw because of the rain.

One of the reasons we tried to get some many character autographs was because I had made all the kids an autograph book for SWW.

DSC00183-1.jpg

I made a page for all the characters that had been at SWW previously. We missed a few but we got everyone Anthony really wanted.

These are the kids' autograph books I made them last year and they brought in May too. We almost have them completely filled!

I am going to try and finish up my TR soon because I have a new ticker!!!! I couldn't wait any longer to share!

Here are pictures of Anthony and Tessa on the first day of school.

Ready for kindergarten!

Love the autograph books! Those are really cute!

And the pictures of the kids 1st day of school are precious!! :goodvibes

I noticed that new ticker! Can't wait to hear all about that!

Congrats on a new ticker! I hope you have an amazing trip. And I hope we will all get to read another great TR!

Your autograph books are amazing. How did you do them?

Cute first-day pics too!

Aww thank you! If I don't get moving on this I won't have time for a PTR!

I made them on Snapfish. There is a thread on here called A simple guide to making your own autograph books which is where I got the pages from. Then I just uploaded those to Snapfish to make the books.

We walked over to Hollywood and Vine and checked in for our 12:30 lunch ADR at 11:30. They told us it would be no problem to seat us early and we walked right in. The restaurant was pretty empty, they were even taking walk-ups.

DSCN1753-1.jpg

We sat down and Jake came to see us right after we ordered our drinks. You can see how empty it was!

DSCN1713-1-1.jpg

Tessa enjoyed dancing to all the Playhouse Disney songs.

We all got up and got our plates.

DSCN1740-1.jpg

I know that the reviews of Hollywood and Vine are really bad. I had read them and was a little worried. The only reason we were eating here was because Anthony specifically requested it. We ate breakfast here last year which I thought was good. We wanted the early morning hours for SWW activities though so lunch was our only option. :scared1: Much to my surprise we enjoyed our meal here! Granted it does not take a lot for us to be happy, the food would have to be REALLY bad for us to think it wasn't good. Everything we tried was yummy. I especially liked the salmon, sandwiches and salads. Anthony ate three plates of the mac and cheese! I know this place has been compared to Golden Corral but we ate at a Golden Corral on the way home (why I have no idea after a week of Disney buffets) and we thought H&V was WAAAY better.

June came around to visit us next.

DSCN1739-1.jpg

Then came Special Agent Oso.

DSCN1744-1.jpg

Anthony received another cupcake and birthday card.

DSCN1750-1.jpg

Jake came back around before we left. Anthony had fun goofing off with him.

DSCN1751-1.jpg

Handy Manny came by our table while Anthony was getting food and we didn't wait for him to come back around. We met him last year and we were really just here for Jake!

We had a really good time! The character interaction was great, Tessa loved dancing to the music and the food was fine. Was it the best food I've ever had? No and if you are not interested in the characters I would not recommend this place. I realize that my children probably won't be into Disney Jr forever so the window of eating at Hollywood and Vine is small and the food was perfectly fine for what it was. :thumbsup2

Up next: We need a break before more SWW!
