Jedis, Pirates and Extended Family! A May/June 2012 TR Update: Lunch @ H&V

Friday morning we were up at 6. It was our first full day at Star Wars Weekend and our goal was to be at Hollywood Studios around 7:20. We all got ready and went to my parent's condo to pick up my brother. We had also decided to let Tessa stay with my parents today. My mom offered to watch her the day before and after some thought we decided to to take her up on the offer. We decided we would try and meet as many characters as possible today since Tessa does not like meeting characters. We dropped Tessa off and picked up my brother. My brother does not do crowds or hot weather.:scared1: He's a big Star Wars fan and wanted to see some of the characters so he was giving it a try. My sister and her family were going to DHS today as well and we all arrived around the same time at 7:30. The park was already open. My sister and I took the kids over to sign up for Jedi Training (attempt number 3 for Anthony!) while the guys went to get FPs for Toy Story Mania. We got the kids signed up and got the 10:45 show again.

Our next stop was Tatooine Traders. My mom had offered to buy all the kids a build your own droid and we wanted to do this before the crowds started pouring in.

After we built our droids we headed towards Toy Story Mania. On the way over Chad and my BIL called and said Darth Vader was out and the line wasn't too long yet. Vader wasn't scheduled to be out until 9 but he was out at 8. We met up by the Backlot Tour where Darth Vader was doing meet and greets and got in line. We waited about 15 minutes which is nothing compared to his normal line which I think was averaging 1-2 hours.

Anthony was completely star struck! He kept looking up at Darth. He was a little nervous when he first walked up but after the meet he was so excited. He kept saying, "Darth Vader is one of my favorites." After meeting Vader we passed by Toy Story's stand by line because the wait was already 60 minutes.

The rest of the Star Wars meet and greets did not begin until 10 so we decided to hit some rides. First Anthony wanted a drink so we got him a frozen Coke in the R2-D2 mug.

meganspics016-1.jpg

We walked over to Tower of Terror. Anthony rode this last year and said he would never ride it again. He refused to ride so Chad and my BIL waited with Anthony and my niece while the rest of us got in line. It was basically a walk-on. Tower of Terror is my favorite ride at Disney World. I am a big Twilight Zone fan and I love the theming of this ride. Every time I have ever rode this the elevator has gone to the top, the window has opened and then the elevator drops. Well this time that did not happen! We went up and then just dropped with no warning. I was completely surprised! Which is probably why our ride photo looks like this...

Photo1001FourBySix-1.jpg

After TOT we went over to Rock N Roller Coaster. Chad had never been on this before but since we could ride together he decided to try it. My sister waited with the little kids as the rest of us got in line. Chad and I normally don't get to ride things together so it was nice that we got to this time.

Photo1003FourBySix-1.jpg

Chad really liked it. I think it is one of his favorites now. We went over towards the Star Tours area and we got there around 9:50. We didn't have to check into Jedi Training until 10:30 and the wait time for Star Tours was 20 minutes. We decided to get in the stand by line. Ugh, not a good decision! The line was a lot longer than 20 minutes. We did not get off the ride until 10:40! We rushed over to JTA check in and JUST made it. Of course we had to run Anthony to the bathroom and he made it back right when everyone was lining up. It was a close call!

The kids were lined up and Anthony, my nephew and niece were all put below the stage. My sister and I got a little worried because the previous show the kids below the stage had to fight Darth Maul. We weren't sure if Anthony or my niece would be okay with that! The kids were given their robes and lightsabers and told to find a circle to stand on. Ahsoka Tano from Clone Wars was assisting the young padawans today.

After learning their Jedi moves, Darth Vader came out.

Next we saw who our kids would be fighting, .Asajj Ventress from Clone Wars.

This was Jedi Training attempt number three for Anthony. Was it a success?

After some last minute tips from Ahsoka, Anthony fought Ventress!

Anthony defeated Ventress! We were so excited that our third time at Jedi Training had been the charm. Right after the kids lined up to get their Jedi Training certificates it started raining. An announcement was made that this session had been cancelled. Luckily the kids had been able to finish up before the rain began. Anthony got his certficate from Ahsoka and we tried to figure out what to do next.

We went to TSMM to use our FPs.

disney18-1.jpg

When we got out of TSMM the rain was picking up. We saw Stormtroopers out in the area and Anthony got a quick picture taken.

meganspics022-1.jpg

Then the rain really started coming down.We rushed to cover at the Studio Catering Co. We were all ready to eat lunch but the menu at Studio Catering Co. did not appeal to some people in our group. Well, other than this...

DSCN1653-1.jpg

This was a chocolate and peanut butter cupcake. It was delicious.:cloud9: The best cupcake of the trip! It started raining even harder while we were trying to wait out the rain. I checked menus on my phone and everyone decided they wanted to eat at Backlot Express over by Star Tours. We braved the rain and rushed over. The place was PACKED. We were all wet and cold and not in the greatest moods (especially me.) Chad and my sister were ordering the food while the rest of us were trying to find a table which was no easy task. If a table did open people waiting outside would run in and swoop on it. It's hard to fight for a table when you are trying to keep track of 4 children. After about 20 minutes my BIL asked a CM to help us get a table and she very nicely did. I had the Grilled Turkey & Cheese - multigrain ciabatta with arugula and red peppers served with French fries or carrot sticks $8.99. It was fine. My favorite part of Backlot Express was that they had Sprite Zero as a drink option. Once we got a table and settled we actually enjoyed our lunch. We put the kids at one table and the adults sat at a table next to them and just kind of chilled for a minute.

During lunch we discussed a game plan. Our goal for the day had been to meet characters but we were told that there would be no outdoor meet and greets while it was raining. It didn't look like the rain was going to let up anytime soon. We took a bathroom break and when we met back up Chad had bought us ponchos! My stand against the ponchos was over. We went to ride the Great Movie Ride which was a walk on.

After our ride we went back outside and it was still pouring. The parade had been cancelled and the crowds had really thinned out. We went down Sunset Boulevard and everyone decided to ride TOT again. Chad, Anthony and I said we would meet everyone at the merchandise tent Darth Mall.

Meeting Darth Vader was pretty cool. He's so tall! The R2 mug is cute. We got the popcorn bucket last year.

We were so excited that JTA went well this time! Anthony was very proud of himself. Thanks!

The rain was certainly a bummer.

I didn't think crowds were bad. I think you would be fine. I will try & give lots of info about wait times though since you are thinking of a SWW trip.

Wow - great updates!!!!

First, I have to say how much I love the R2-D2 mug!!!! I totally want one! :thumbsup2

Second, meeting Darth Vader - awesome. :good vibes

Third, the jedi training thing went so well this time! :cool1:

Over all, Star Wars Weekend is looking very cool (other than that pesky rain ).

Thank you!:goodvibes

The R2 mug is really cute! I have only seen it while at SWW but we bought the popcorn bucket last August.

Meeting Darth Vader was very cool.

SWW was a lot of fun. The rain was not ideal but we didn't let it stop us.

How awesome to find Darth Vader with a short line! So glad that Anthony got to meet him!

Yay for finishing Jedi Training Academy!!! Go Anothony!!!

Love that cupcake--Bryan and Maddie would go crazy for that (the design, not the chocolate for Bryan of course. :rotfl:)

Super cool R2D2 mug!

(See I know a little about Star Wars!)

I sure wish the rain had held for you guys. What a bummer, but how nice for Anthony to have his mom and dad's attention all day long! :goodvibes

Darth Vader with a short line was a great surprise! I don't think people realized he was out yet because the times guide said 9.

Yes we finally did Jedi Training! Anthony was proud of himself.

That's true it is very chocolate! Chad didn't have any of it. He doesn't like peanut butter either!

Haha! See it's not so bad. R2 is cute!

The rain was a bummer for sure. It was nice to get to spend some time with Anthony & Tessa had a lot of fun shopping with her grandparents!

I just showed you SWW pictures to Josh and he totally freaked out! He couldn't believe that Ahsoka was Anthony's Jedi Master. That is SO COOL!

It looks like you had a great day despite the rain. :goodvibes I love that pic of Anthony catching the rain. Super cute!

It was soooo cool to have Ahsoka helping out! We were really excited when she walked out.

We still had fun even with the rain. I love that picture too:goodvibes

I've been reading through your trip report. I was excited when I found it as my ds3 is autistic as well. He was diagnosed at 2. We are leaving in less than a month, so I've been researching everything I can to be prepared with him. Thanks again.

Wow I am honored to be your first post! Tessa was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 2 & autism right after she turned 3.

Thanks so much for reading along. I hope you & your family will have a wonderful trip.:wizard:

If you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to ask. :goodvibes

I don't know how your son does with crowds/noise or anything but you can get a GAC (Guest Assistance Card) if you don't think he can handle the lines. We had one for Tessa just in case but we barely ever used it because the lines didn't bother her and she was fine waiting. We just ended up utilizing Fast Passes.

I love taking Tessa to Disney. It's amazing to see her eyes light up and really enjoy herself. All the CMs have been great too & very accommodating.

I'm sorry I have been so slow updating. The kids start school tomorrow so I have a ton of bittersweet emotions going on here. Hopefully within the next week though I will be faster with the updates as I should have some time! I will be needing a Disney fix too while I miss my kiddos.

I hope everyone is having a great Labor Day & I will catch up with your TRs & PTRs soon.:goodvibes

No worries!! We'll be here....whenever you're ready! :goodvibes

I know what you mean about the bittersweet emotions. Reid starts PreK4 tomorrow. I'm excited for him because I know how much he loves his school. But, I'm sad that this is his last year before "big boy" school. :sad2: Good luck to you & the kids for tomorrow!

Good luck with Back to School Megan! I'll be thinking of you this week.

I think that Maddie and I are finally over the hump, so I can assure you that you can do it! It was a rough few weeks though!

If I can share (I didn't want to scare everyone until we had some resolution)--Maddie pretty much cried every morning from Day 2 until Day 7. On day 7 I finally got to the bottom of it. (Maddie tends to keep unpleasant feelings inside, she just kept saying "I just miss you when I'm at school mommy". This is a kid who's never had one moment of separation anxiety in her life.) She was nervous/scared of the 'big hallways' and that 'a big kid might bump into her' and that she'd get 'all mixed up and lost'. That morning I took an index card and wrote:

My name is Maddie. These big hallways make me a little nervous. This morning I got a little mixed up, and I need some help finding my class room. Can you take me to Mrs. X's Kindergarten class?

I read it to her, and put the index card in the front pocket of her back pack and told her to use it like Izzy uses her pixie dust-in case of emergencies. ;) She knew to take it to a teacher, or to the office if she needed help.

She didn't really believe that it would help, but agreed to try. That day she jumped into the car and said "Mommy I think that card you gave me is a Magic Card! I didn't feel scared at all today!" A few days ago she said that she's pretty sure that she won't need it at all soon! :thumbsup2

Thanks for letting my hijack your TR!

Have a great first day of school!!!

Shannon: Thank you for sharing that story about Maddie. Poor little thing. I was almost crying for her. :( I think you came up with such a great solution. Especially being able to connect it to something she loves. I'm going to give you a big :thumbsup2 for that one!

Glad to hear it's going better for her. :goodvibes

Thanks Amanda. I came home from dropping her off crying almost every day. It sucked!

I didn't want to tell any of you guys about it before the problem was solved though. Too many people getting ready to send their kids off, didn't want to scare them. Now that we're doing well-I thought it might help some people.

Thanks again, you made my day!

You're so sweet to think of the other people first who were sending their kids off to kindergarten. I would have gone home & cried too. It's just so hard to see your kids scared, unhappy, hurt, sad, etc. And Maddie is such a bright spirit that I can only imagine how it must have felt to see her down.

Well, I'm glad I could make your day! I really do think you helped solve that problem for her fabulously!!

Thanks Shannon! Thanks so much for sharing about Maddie. That is so sweet of you to not want to worry other moms. I'm so glad you came up with a solution & Maddie is doing better. That was a great idea!:goodvibes

Anthony had some similar issues. The first day he did great then the second day when I picked him up his eyes were so red like he'd been crying. He said he cried for hours & it was too long. It was sooo hard the next day to have to take him back. That was the worst day though. He is still sad when he leaves but he's always happy when I pick him up. Hopefully the routine will sink in & we can have happy mornings too.

Tessa has been up & down but overall she's done well. Yesterday she had a rough day but it was the first Monday back to school after a weekend so I think that was probably it.

Thanks for the kind words ladies! You are the best!:grouphug:

Shannon, what a positively brilliant solution to the problem! You are amazing!!! I'm so glad that Maddie is doing better. I think those hallways and the confusion are very scary. They have the three kindergarten classes at Willow's school in a different building (the school is a campus of multiple buildings), and they go to lunch separately and have a separate playground - I'm really glad because it seems like a gentler way to ease them into "real school."
