January 2014 Rental Car Deal Watch

Oh, yeah! I was planning to cash in our Airmiles for the "gift card"/coupons for our rental. I'll try doing it directly. Nice tip, thank you.

Well, I'm done! Following the suggestion of someone else on here, I booked thru Airmiles -- which is a Canadian points/reward program, mostly thru grocery stores.

My airmiles covered every cent of the car rental; I'm paying only the taxes and fees, which total $64, for a mid-size SUV for the week.

That's a great deal! I'm glad it worked for someone else too :thumbsup2

Megsablue: The icing on the cake is that I double-checked with my regular auto insurance people, and they confirmed that my regular policy up here in Canada (Aviva) covers me when I drive a rental car, even out of the country. They printed out confirmation of that, for me to bring along to Orlando. So I'm really, truly, just paying the $65 in fees/taxes for an SUV for a week.

Plus, I phoned Alamo to make sure my Airmiles' points "payment" really paid for our two kids' car seats, and: yes. Those are already paid for, too.

Psyched.

All my hard work down the tubes. I was checking the price of fares for my trip with JetBlue today and my flight time was changed - having me arrive 1hour later. No big deal right - well yeah, because then my room at the resort would be in the backwoods not hear a pool etc. Having never had this issue before I called JetBlue and found I was able to change my flight either to the day before, day after or same day anytime. SO I am now arriving at 12:13pm instead of 6:38pm. Pretty sweet but now the car rentals I have all over the place as I hunt for bargains are all no longer good. AND for some unknown reason the Alamo/Visa promo code says its no longer good at MCO...

I am looking at AAA. BJ's and any other way I can to find a promo code. I don't want to pay big money for a car....

Help?

It can cover your regular insurance, dings and crashes...but check on what liability insurance carries over onto your rental vehicle.
If you have CAA then that can be used

do you have an existing reservation? if so, did you try to modify it vs booking a new one?

If the actual rental period hasn't changed (example: 1 week and 1 day) often the rate won't either. Decided to fly down night before our trip and nothing changed for us via National.

It wouldn't let me modify the Alamo one because they said the coupon code didn't work anymore. I posted on Alamo's facebook and they said that different locations can black out dates at their discretion, so that was null and void anyway. Thrifty when I modified it got way more expensive....

I am not done searching by a long shot but AAA seems to have the best deals for me, for now :)

I haven't been able to use a decent Alamo coupon @ MCO for sometime. Is it a $30 coupon that is rejecting? If you remove the coupon code is it a deal-breaker as to price? There were upgrade coupons that were working via the AAA link last I checked for cars, perhaps you could switch them out via a phone call?

did you try either dollar (no code or the specials & AAA) or the national KLM code? 8572130 best rate I've found thus far for minivan.

good luck

When I went to MCO in June 2013 I used the $30 off Visa code and I paid $116 for a week of a full sized.....the Alamo cars are in the $300 range right now and an SUV with my AAA is $245....a full sized is $233.....The code above didn't work for Dollar for me :(

Is anybody else seeing that the prices are rising not lowering? At this point I am estatic I booked when I did because a lot of the coupons aren't working for my week as or now. I am smack dab between the Disney Marathon and the MLK weekend....either way I am getting screwed, LOL.

How is it that everyone seems to come up with great deals? I'm seeing 12/31-1/11 for $358/wk Standard size (pay later) or $329/wk Standard (pay now) thru Alamo, no coupon.

We are only willing to use National or Alamo. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Do you have AAA or BJ's/Costco membership. Check booking with them. I am finding that I am having a hard time with a "cheap" car this time around. I am going 1/11/13-1/18/13 and I can't do better than $245 for an SUV through AAA and I got that price Sunday, today I can't find anything close to that to save my life!

Still way to early to see the best prices. try 2-3 weeks before. That's when the best deals are out.

I just got an economy car with Budget for pick up at MCO at 10am, Thurs 1/9 and drop off on Monday at 6pm (1/13) for a TOTAL of $77.77! I haven't seen that price in a really really long time.

I am a Costco member so I used the rate code: W852875 and the Coupon code of: MUGZ042 .

I have always rented with Alamo but they have gone sky high.

I thought this was a great deal. :cool1::cool1:

Kris

Slight drop on Alamo for 1/11-1/20 (10 day rental due to pick up/drop off times) prior rate was $321 now down to $297 for a "standard" - system would not allow me to enter free upgrade coupon (seems to be a bug, I get to the select a "mid size" then I get "Error Occurred") this would save me an additional $5.... This price was the rate with either an Insiders Discount or Amex discount from my CC...

Just got a Budget rental (Ford Focus) for 1/5-1/12 for $160.77 through Costco. :thumbsup2

The BJ's price for Ford Focus is $277.50. I wonder if that is because I am in between the Disney Marathon and the MLK weekend. I am also finding that with the exception of the Hertz/AAA coupon code, nobody is accepting any of the coupons for that week in Orlando. I have confirmation from Alamo that they won't use the Visa code that week in Orlando, I found some really great Hertz coupons but on the Hertz site they say they are invalid. Is this a popular week to go?????

I keep hearing prices will drop in December - I hope so because I don't want to pay over $200 for a car for a week :(

Wow! That's awesome!!! I'm going to check that out right now!

I'm in the same week with the same issues : /

If anybody is picking up in MCO and dropping off in Port Canaveral. I got these rates. Jan 15-18 MCO/PC 72.00 and Jan 25- 26 PC/MCO 35.00. I used code 5c11m with Dollar.
