None of the sequels are set for 2017 though when avatar land is supposed to open. The first sequel doesn't come out until 2018.How much you want to bet they had an agreement to wait for sequels until the new park area is open... to maximize interest and attendance? This could be a first for Disney to actually get the timing WITH major movies instead of years later.
Given how hugely popular the first one was, the only thing I'm surprised about is how long it took to announce sequels.
Back in 2012 James Cameron said he is only going to be focusing on making Avatar movies. Remembering him saying this all those years ago, it's not that surprising. At this point in his career, and bank account, he can do anything he wants.
I think the first sequel will be popular because of the first one but after that who knows. Also you have to think about overseas sales as that's where avatar made the bulk of its money. He seems a little bit over-confident on the fact that people are going to care for his franchise almost 10 years after the first film. It could be another massive hit, of course, but it could also go really wrong.

While the original's story was unoriginal and cliche, what really captured people were the visuals. I'm sure the cliche story kind of helped sales as it was a story that seemed to fit with almost every demographic.
I can see the franchise surviving on visuals alone though. Not necessarily saying it's a good or bad thing. But think about it, the visuals of the first were great. The deep water filming they've been doing for the second and third will probably draw a crazy amount of people in. If he can keep coming up with "gimmick" filming locations, I don't see why people won't flock to the theater to see it on the big screen. I use the word gimmick for a lack of a better term. Maybe I should of said filming spectacle? I don't know.

Avatar may open late but I don't think it will open a year late.I bolded the reason why the sequels may still coincide with the AK Pandora opening. Or, perhaps, the AK Rivers of Light opening![]()
For sure. If the visuals are as advanced as they were in the first film, that will be an important selling point. Nowadays that level of visual development is more common to see, though. Just look at the new Jungle Book. That's pretty much all done in CGI.
I guess we'll see.
blah blah, "i'm going to make FOUR sequels".
Ok, enough already, if you're going to make them, stop talking about them, and make them.
I highly doubt all four will ever get made.
