Jaime's Flower Power Trip! NEW 7/05 CH. 62: The "Really" End **COMPLETED**

CHAPTER 8: "BOMA" or "Feed Me, I’m Starving, Again!"– Still Saturday, April 28, 2007

Thank heavens I read so much about the zoo that is check-in outside Boma! I would have had a panic attack if I would have had to enter that crowd not knowing what I was doing.

Madness, I tell you, madness!:sad2:

Now, I didn’t know the layout of the hotel at that time, but of course, I do now, so here’s the problem with the crowd… I don’t know the actual directions, so I’ll make Jiko NORTH to help explain this. The room you wait in has Jiko north of you, past the doors that lead outside to the pool and The Mara Food Court – so there’s traffic running EAST-WEST and WEST-EAST in and out of those doors. Just SOUTH of those doors is the room, lined with benches, here you wait for Boma. Check in for Boma is on the WEST wall. The line to check in runs right through the center of the room. On the SOUTH side of the room is the entrance to Boma and part of the waterfall/stream that runs from the lobby to the pool. On the EAST side of the room, you have public bathrooms and a staircase that leads up to the bar and, eventually, the lobby. So there are people going up and down the stairs and in and out of the bathroom ALL AROUND the big line of people down the center of the room trying to check in. The people on the benches are trying not to have their feet stepped on and get sick of looking at tushies.

Could that be any clearer?:confused3

This picture was taken sitting on the NORTH side bench- it shows the SOUTH side of the room - looking into Boma. Those 2 blurs on the right side of the picture are being led into the restaurant. The people on the left, bent over, are getting food from the buffet.

Still sitting on the bench - the bathrooms are in the alcove all the way to the right of this picture (EAST) - the stairs lead to the bar.

Again, thank heavens I was prepared… I don’t do well in crowds. I’ve been known to run out of restaurants in town just to breathe!

So, we get called…

I get us checked in with a big "Jambo", and they have run out of pagers. I really wish I could remember the check in girl’s name – she was gorgeous! I believe she was from South Africa??? - I don’t know – blonde and so sweet! She said to wait without the pager, it would be about 15 minutes, or I could come up in a few minutes and see if they have any back yet.
We got very lucky to snag a bench and we waited about 10 minutes before I got too worried. What if they forget about us? What if I never get called? What if they call us and we can’t hear them over the mob?
So I waited until the desk was clear and I went back to her for a pager.

They had some now – I had been watching people get called… She remembered my name, despite having helped about 20 people in the last 10 minutes. Nice. I told her I just worry about missing our call and she agreed completely, said she would have come back up for a pager too!
It was only a few minutes after that when we were called to dinner. About 8:20, I think. That’s why I wanted to check in early, because I knew from reading that they’d be running late for seating.

We were seated at a table right by the buffet line, near the soups. We ordered our beverages (the three of them drank more iced tea on this trip than I’ve ever seen consumed!). I debated the Blue Glow-tini, but I find I eat less when I drink when eating… well, we can’t have that, can we?

A lot of my food and drink choices this trip were influenced by trip reports and the food porn thread. At Boma, I heard you have to try the Carrot-Ginger soup. And, any Dis’ser worth her ears knows about the Zebra Domes. Well, any Dis’ser who’s going to stay at the AKL, that is!;)

FROM THE TOP: Yes, that's the fabled Zebra Dome... yum! Didn't want to be too full to enjoy them, so I got one with my first plate! Next to it is a brown and yellow lump: bobotie. Thought it looked like chili on cornbread, but it was a meat and cinnamon-ish item - tasty. Prime rib - suppose that needs no explaination. Chicken - extremely flavorful! Under the chicken is nut-crusted salmon: I liked it, Rhonda was not a fan. The little round, brown balls at the bottom of my plate are fallafels (wow, that's spelled wrong!) with a yogurt sauce. Holy Cow - I have died and gone to heaven!!! They are like husdh puppies and, according to a chef at The Mra later in the week, vegetarian. Sshhh... don't tell my body I gave it veggies! Next to that is a white item - coconut rice: not what you'ds expect... but not bad. Up in the top, right corner is a bowl of carrot-ginger soup. Very good and sweet, eventually it becomes too much. A few spoonfuls are enough.
349%3C3%3B8%3A8%7Ffp6%3C%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A762%3C385ot1lsi

I was all about the veggies THIS trip! At the top - your basic salad WITH mango vinegrette - ain't I exotic??? Potato salad to the right and 3 kinds of hummus with flatbread at the bottom. I so wanted someone with me who got this saying when I came back to the table:

"hummus. I got the hummus."
349%3C3%3B8%3A8%7Ffp67%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A762%3B437ot1lsi

Desserts. Top: cherry crumble - I pronounce this to be yumble. Banana bread with vanilla sauce: Rhonda like, me no like; some kind of apple thing I thought would be good, it was not; alcohol-laced chocolate mousse: freakin' excellent!; strawberry tart: pasty soggy, strawberry boring; and in the middle: flourless chocolate cake: eh, didn't have the "yo" factor for me, dawg.
349%3C3%3B8%3A8%7Ffp63%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A762%3C3%3B%3Bot1lsi

After dinner, we went outside to go to the Mara for refillable mugs for the trip. All the AKL mugs had been replaced by "Year of a Million Dreams" mugs. We asked about the AKL mugs and were told they didn’t have any – they had all been pulled for the YoMD mugs. Well, that’s an issue. I wanted the mug as a souvenir, not for the refills. So did the other 3 women. Disney lost a $50 sale on mugs.

While we were talking to the cashier about the mugs, I asked how the counter service credits worked. She told me they allow you 1 entrée, 1 beverage, and 1 dessert for a CS credit – BUT, you can use a snack item as your dessert. So, you get an entrée, a beverage, and any item that’s under $4. Sweet! And breakfast is only an entrée and a beverage.
After that, we decide to head out to the viewing area behind the lobby, as we’ve been here all day and have yet to see an animal at the resort! I can not believe a giraffe didn’t handle our check-in!

So we go to the Kojpe, and guess what? It’s dark out! Well, they can make out some animal shapes in the darkness – I really can not. There may have been a zebra-shaped lump out there, but other things they were seeing were just rocks to me.

349%3C3%3B8%3A8%7Ffp68%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A762%3B449ot1lsi

We wander a bit and talk to a couple of CMs, I give them my "jambo" greeting, which they return, and tell them "asante" and "kwa heri" (that’s the pronunciation, not the spelling!) good-bye.

We return to our rooms with the plan to meet back up at about 7:30 for breakfast at The Mara and a bus to EPCOT! We unpack, get ready for bed, and lights out by 11:00, I think!

HIGHS: Getting to stay at a new resort (a DELUXE one, at that!); getting Sandy on Expedition Everest; seeing the Finding Nemo musical; keeping a promise to a turtle; eating at Boma

LOWS: Not having connecting rooms; the refillable mugs not being AKL mugs

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Ok Wordy McTalkerson, :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I was laughing REALLY LOUDLY when I read this. My DH was wondering what the heck was going on so I had to show him the other Friends reference. We were both :rotfl2:

I freakin' love your trip reports!:lmao:

Missy in MN

oooo, I love the Boma news. We have ADR's for the first night we are there. Glad to hear it was good from you!

AND... I love that Finding Nemo movie and cannot wait to see the show.

Keep writing :)

BOMA looks fun! I would have for sure been lost in the crowds of people! You AKl detail is just amazing...I want to stay there more and more! Do all of the resorts have the new mugs now?

We are on the Giraffe Trail. That’s the area that overlooks the bus stop. Only it really doesn’t because the bus stop is covered – you can’t even see the trail you walk to the busses. The noise of the busses and the people on the walkway never bothered any of us.

Giraffe Trail is off the lobby (duh, they all are) and we walk down a short hallway to the elevators.

You see the light at the end of the hallway? That's where the elevators are!

That's where we were as well - I really liked it cause I could find my way to the room easy - anywhere else in the Lodge I might still be wandering (although would that be a bad thing? :rotfl: )

Any pics of your view????????????

Seriously, great report so far and ummmm, when on vacation ice cream is ok anytime. It's a rule, really, it is.

I KNOW I'm a GATer, just never knew the name before. Thanks for the education! :teacher: I tend to call myself a CROWD MOWER. :rotfl:

I didn't know the name of it either, but I taught my kids to do it at a concert... they can hold their own at shows now for sure!

Yes, definitely, thanks for posting the photos! I really like seeing the room..seems very nice...but especially the photos of the little dino treasures! :thumbsup2

Tons more resort pictures - we've barely begun! :rolleyes1

Goodness. I am all caught up. Thanks so much for the detailed photo's of AKL. Are you going to reveal if you would stay there again? That tells me just how much you liked it...

Did you like the Nemo show? I really enjoyed it and was super glad that there are seat backs...but man my tushy hurt on that cold metal!

I loved the Nemo show - I wish we had time to do it again, but our AK time was limited. And were the benches metal??? I thought they were wood... huh... :confused3

Too funny about parking yourself on the bench!:rotfl: I had to run for many buses with my gimp knee, not a pretty sight I tell ya! I had 2 drivers wait for though! I love the pics. of AKL it looks sooo nice! I can't wait to hear what you think of BOMA, we ate their too, actually the night before you arrived! :thumbsup2 Looking forward to more!:surfweb:

DID YOU TRY THE FALLAFELS???????????

We wondered that too, but saw resort mugs being sold when we were at another resort... can't remember which resort right now - I'm at work,m not in my Time Rover.

Yes, they're coming... I sure hope you like trees... :rolleyes1

Wow, Tiggerbell, you are a fast and frequent poster!! :rotfl: Now I am caught up again and enjoying. :cutie: I am a huge GATer. I am always the one to go for FP's because of that. I just have to be careful not to run off and leave everyone. My DD and DSIL are super polite and always stop to wait for people while I disappear into the sunset! :cool1: I LOVED Everest!

CHAPTER 9: Do You Hear Jungle Drums??? – SUNDAY, APRIL 29, 2007

PLANS: EPCOT and MGM Studios. Order breakfast the night before, take boat from EPCOT to MGM (I’ve never done that)

BREAKFAST: Room Service - 7:30am (OOP)
LUNCH: Counter Service in EPCOT (suggestions: Germany / UK ) (CS5,6,7,8)
DINNER: Share 2 meals at Sci-Fi Dine In Theater – 7:30pm (TS5,6)

REALITY: I thought, before the trip, that we should save the room service for the day we were doing the tour (Friday) figuring that we’d be all up and at ‘em today, and not so much by the end of the week. So please ignore the above-mentioned PLANS – they are garbage! :thumbsup2

Sandy and I are up at the crack of dawn – both of us being morning people, that is. We had set a 5:30 wake up call with Mickey and Stitch, but Sandy got out of bed at 5:15! I tried to use the speakerphone when the call came, but our speaker phone did not work all week. So I got to listen to Mickey and Stitch every day because Sandy was usually in the shower at that point.

I wanted to walk around the resort, seeing as we had the time and I still hadn’t seen any animals! Sandy’s getting ready (I’m done at this point) and I tell her my plan (we have almost an hour before we meet for breakfast). I have to run next door for something I left there the day before when our room was not ready – Ruth is not dressed and Rhonda’s still in bed.

I tell them I’m going on a safari and we’ll meet them at the planned time. I get back to the room, and Sandy is dressed and ready for a walk. Wow! When’d that happen???

We went to a bunch of viewing areas on a couple of savannas and took tons of pictures. Sandy kept asking me what animals were what and my standard answer was "Greater Kudu" – even if it was a bird. (And at first, I was saying "kudzu", but that felt wrong…)

And after 8 days at the AKL, I wouldn’t know a "Greater Kudu" if it knocked on my front door!

WE FOUND THE ROPE BRIDGE - WHICH WAS ON THE 5TH FLOOR:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp65%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3B375ot1lsi

FROM THE 5TH FLOOR, OUT THE BACK WINDOW OF THE LOBBY:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp65%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3B383ot1lsi

BEHIND THE LOBBY ON THE 2ND FLOOR WAS A SITTING AREA (AND i BET OTHER THINGS HAPPEN HERE, WE JUST NEVER SAW ANY OF THEM!):
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3A947ot1lsi

SANDY CHECKING OUT A SAVANNA:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp65%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3C858ot1lsi

FINALLY! A GREATER KUDU: :rotfl2:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp65%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3B399ot1lsi

WILDEBEAST:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp67%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3C874ot1lsi

HIDDEN MICKEY?:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp67%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3C883ot1lsi

ELAND (YOU COULD HEAR HIM TEARING UP THE GRASS AS HE ATE!):
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp68%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3C8%3A6ot1lsi

SUNRISE OVER THE POOL:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp65%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A763%3C935ot1lsi

So breakfast was downstairs at the Mara this morning. This is when I actually checked on what you got for your CS at BREAKFAST. And we were told 1 entrée and a beverage. We get in the short line. Ruth is in front, then me, Rhonda, and Sandy .

Ruth orders a kids’ meal and a biscuit on the side. She used the words – ON THE SIDE - then was surprised :confused3 when the cashier charged her for the biscuit. Also, because she ordered the kids’ meal, she could only have a small beverage – she had to get the small bottle of water.

MY ADULT BREAKFAST PLATTER:
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp6%3A%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A7634756ot1lsi

RUTH'S KIDS' MEAL AND PAID-FOR BISCUIT:

LESSON LEARNED?: Just ask a CM what they will let you do for a CS credit, instead of assuming things like, "If I get a smaller meal, they'll throw in a biscuit for free."

We ate our breakfast at a table right outside The Mara, then headed to catch the bus to EPCOT!

TOO BAD THE FLAG WOULDN'T WAVE - WOULDN'T THAT HAVE BEEN A MUCH NICER PICTURE?
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp6%3B%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A7634785ot1lsi

We didn't have to wait but a few moments for a bus… nice. As we pull into EPCOT, we make sure to note the location of the AKL pick-up spot - #2…
Sounds good, right?

Guess again… :sad2: #2 is exactly as far as the POR bus pick-up!!! Instead of going straight when you get to the first set of bus pick-ups, you turn right and walk all the way to the end… Hard to explain, you’ll have to look for yourselves next time you’re in the World!

We go through security (I love that it’s not right outside the turnstiles anymore! Really cuts back on congestion!) and get in line at the turnstiles. After we participate in the countdown, I GAT to the right to a clear turnstile… Ruth and Sandy are right behind me… followed by a man with 2 kids who can’t work turnstiles, tickets, or their fingers!:rotfl:

I NEED A CLEAR 6" RULER TO STRAP TO JACK FOR THESE KINDS OF PICTURES...
349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp6%3A%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A76347%3B3ot1lsi

Once Rhonda catches up, we take a few pictures and join the crowd to Soarin’… crowd? Maybe parade or stampede would be a better word? First, we get stopped by the rope… it was NOT where I saw it last (OK – WHO MOVED THE ROPE???). The last rope drop I saw at EPCOT was just past the Leave a Legacy monoliths, right before Spaceship Earth. THIS rope drop was past Spaceship Earth, in front of the fountain.

I couldn’t see too well because we were about 8 people back, but I kept catching glimpses of characters playing with the people in the front. They took down the rope and the Soarin’ Stampede began…

It was orderly (probably because we weren’t right up front) but it was a decent size group of people heading to The Land. They had cast members lined up the entire way, right into the Land where they directed everyone to the right (about time!) and down the stairs/escalator.

What the h…? Are you hearing jungle drums? I am. It’s all the people who work down in The Land’s food court. They’re all standing along the walkway past the food court with drums and maracas and tambourines! It was so funny! It really did give it a "survival of the fittest" feeling as we went to get Fast Passes.

349%3C54%3A86%7Ffp6%3A%3Dot%3E2326%3D679%3D%3B9%3C%3DXROQDF%3E23237%3A76348%3C4ot1lsi

I felt the same way – I kept expecting Samantha Brown to come out from behind a rock or something! (She hosted the Travel Channel special on Great Hotels – The Animal Kingdom Lodge)

Never made it to the rope bridge, huh?

Yes, yes I tried the fallafels! They were incredible! Funny I just posted on my TR about BOMA. It was our favorite restaurant by far of the entire trip! I love all your pictures of the food and AKL and the grounds. We had camera battery issues:sad2: Loving your report! It will be funny to hear about your day versus ours at MGM!:thumbsup2

Hey there Jaime, just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten about you !! I have been trying to get back in to TR writing mode so I have been catching up on all the ones I've sub'd.

It "sounds" like this one is going to be better than your others. Loving it and can't wait to "hear" the rest.

Are you and Meg going in September? and if so... when? Caylin and I will be arriving Sept 22nd and leaving Oct 1st. I would love to meet up with you guys.

I guess I need to change my countdown ticker ;)

Rhonda and I are driving - we leave Sept. 6th. Meg, Judi, Ron, and Brooke are flying and leave Sept. 8th. We'll be at POFQ until the 15th.

That's so weird that you wrote today - I was looking at something in the report and saw your first post and wondered where you were hiding! Stupid real life!!! :rotfl:

Sounds like EVERYONE but me will be there the week you're going!

Oh MAN, I was hoping we'd be there around the same time. My bday is Sept. 1st and Caylin's is the 30th so we're celebrating this year with 10 days of FREE FOOD from Disney, isn't it nice of them to do that for us for our Bdays...;) Brandon said he wanted a cool birthday filled with yummy food next year, since we're getting 10 days in WDW. Soooooo, me wanting to be faair and all, since you can't let a grown man CRY. Well you can, but that's a whole 'nother board and story involving a tea kettle and an ex husband :rolleyes1 . So, like I said being fair and all..... I'm taking him to Hawaii for his bday in April.

So, yes, between my REAL life, ( which btw totally sucked for a bit) and planning another trip to Disney in September, Caylin's SURPRISE you're going to PARIS this summer, and Brandon's okay Honey, to be fair I guess we'll go to Waikiki bday trip..... my REAL life has been super busy. But I am hoping to be back and writing strong by next week.

okay, I'll let you get back to YOUR real life, or writing your TR, whatever :rolleyes1
