Not getting into the big debate here, I have a new question.

My FIL gave us 3 boxes of coins he has collected over the last 50 years. I have lots of proof sets (several Morgan silver dollar sets) etc. I looked up their value in the "blue book" of coins but how do I go about selling them. Will I just get ripped off going to a coin dealer? I'd like to slowly work my way through these boxes as we don't want to keep them but am unsure the best way to do it. I'm afraid to list on Ebay as well as my auctions will always sell for the "bargain" and the next person with the same item will make twice as much.......
Anyway, any advice is welcome.

If you don't know their value, take them to a few different shops and see what they offer you. I would not think as an individual you'd do very well on ebay.

The most interesting part of this post is that the "thief" poster has not come back to even give an apology. I guess it is easy to call someone a thief or question their ethics but impossible to apologize when given enough anecdotal information to disprove her statement.

Actually, no - I like being told I am right by dozens of people. Kinda made my day.

I actually thought the part that I was "stealing" was that I had unrolled a few rolls at work, on work time. I did not want to continue to do that, so I stopped, and will do the rest at home when I get them.

I was really so excited by this...we have been going through a really rough time lately. DH is out of work, has been for 14 months - since 10 days after I found out I was pregnant with our third child. And yes, we do have a Disney trip planned (a surprise one!) - we had one planned last January that was paid for, and I had used Disney Gift Cards. So, there was $1500 in disney cards not doing us any good - we just had to come up with airfare. My grandmother decided to surprise us all with a large gift this Christmas (and I am her banker, so my surprise came earlier than everyone else). We all just....need a vacation. Telling the kids that we were not going last year was one of the hardest things I have ever done. So, we are going. I was so happy that maybe, possibly, with this bit of extra, I would not even need to touch Grandma's money for the trip. (and yes, before I get flamed more - please no...just can't take it - we do have savings. We have made it through all this unemployment without even touching our tax return from last year.)

My point is...you never know who is on the other computer, typing away. Words on a screen mean something, whether they be good or bad. Thanks for all the kind thoughts

As someone whose husband was out of work for 10 months.. who had no health insurance and could barely pay her bills to then having a husband who found a job and had it for just a short 5 months before I was diagnosed with cancer and had 3 surgeries in 3 weeks, we planned a trip too.. Do we really have the money to do it? NOPE.. but, life is way too short so we are going in May..
if you can do it, you should.. Congrats on being able too..

As I said, I inherited these coins from another teller. SHE had gotten them in, NOT me. I have no questionable ethics. How 'bout you?

I also only unrolled a few rolls and am buying the rest to do at home. It took maybe six minutes of work time.

Anything else I can do wrong? Oh, wait - when I purchase the rolls, it will be AFTER I clock out, NOT on work time.

Um, I CAN read. It is a gray area and we will have to just each have our own views. I wouldn't brag about it being a find, it is something you have immediate access to via your job. I don't work as a teller or for a bank so it is not something as easily accessed. I work in the corporate security field and it would be a problem under our policies. Like I wrote, gray area and we see it different ways.

Is this a true find? No, it is a benefit of her job by getting access to something that is not openly available to the general public. While I don't think it is stealing, it is questionable ethics. Would OP point out to a customer that an item they were depositing is worth more than the face value, this is something that we don't know. Simply a matter of ethics in my view.

I worked at a bank for years. There is no moral dilemma or question here.
Any one of us can buy all the half dollars or dollars available at any bank and go through them to find rare coins.
The people thinking that this is a question of ethics are just unfamiliar with what's acceptable in the banking industry. No need to be mean and respond with such condemnation.
Yes, the person working as a teller has a leg up on the rest of us because they see the money first. So does the person working at Nordstrom when the clothes first get marked down for sale. Just a perk of the job.

My DH -who doesn't work in the bank- often buys half dollar rolls, or silver dollar rolls to see what treasures he might find. He's been pretty lucky too making a little extra "coin!"

this thread is making me think..... a few months ago I found some old $50 paper bills in moms house,deposited them in her acct.- at the time,the teller did tell me they were rare b/c they were older..... but I was just too busy to worry about it.... she probably did what OP did.....good for her!!
I wonder if they actually were worth more than $50 apiece...... doesn't matter now, but if the teller did exchange her own Money for them, that's not stealing.......
