A friend of mine just had IVF and I have some questions that I don't want to bother her with- she has enough to think about these days!

Statistically, how successful is IVF on the first try? I was thinking I had read 30% success rate? Does that sound right?

How soon will they be able to tell whether or not it was successful?

Her sucess will depend on so many factors that it's too hard to put a number on. She should know if she is pregnant 7-10 days post transfer (transfer-the day the embryo(s) were placed into her uterus). They will test her blood every 48 hours to make sure the embryo(s) continue to grow if her pregnancy test is positive.

Hope it works for her!

Good luck to your friend!!!

I agree with PP that it's hard to put a number on it, b/c it depends on embryo quality, uterine lining, age, etc. But generally, yes, 30% success rate is the average across the board.

Hope your friend is one of the lucky ones!!!!!! :goodvibes

Thanks for your responses! We are praying for them- they have been through so much to even get to this point, so I don't want to ask too much. They had 8 eggs and 3 are implanted, so hopefully by this time next week they will know more!

Wow! I had no idea current success rates for ivf were so high. Back when we did ivf, the national average success rate was about 7%. The clinic we used said their success rate was 10% and they were the tops in our area. We had gone through years of treatments including a failed round of ivf before finally getting pg. Lots of things were changing at that time and improvements were coming fast. I wish your friend all the best!
