Severe weather season is upon us in the Midwest. As the Daughter of a Meteorologist who specializes in severe weather, I would like to let everyone know that your state has a Severe Weather Awareness week.

Here is the link for Minnesota: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mpx/swaw.html

Here is the link for Wisconsin: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mkx/taw.php

Please take the time to look up and read the information for your state. Also, if you have a group of any kind (church, boyscouts, etc.) or just for your office, you can contact your local NOAA office and have a Severe Weather Specialist come and give a talk to your group. Or you can take your class to the office for a tour (call first.) My Dad did a TON of these talks during this time of year. :)

The last thing I would like to recommend is that everyone have a Weather Alert Radio. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/ I would not be without one of these any more than I would be without smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in my home.

Thanks for reading my PSA! :)

we had some very weird and wild weather here this morning. The sky got pitch black with a tinge of green to it..it looked like it was the middle of the night outside and then the wind picked up. Up in the Falls they had some damage that was caused by downbursts. When I went outside (I was at work) my first thought in looking at the sky was "it looks like a tornado sky" It only lasted about 15-20 minutes but it was very freaky and nerve wracking.

Well I'm out here in Mankato, Minnesota today traveling on business. Never encountered tornado weather. It hit tonight big time. OUCH! No tornados touched down, but the sky was pitch black with that eery green look. Severe thunderstorms, hail and winds of 70mph. Glued to the local news on TV with other people in the hotel lobby. I was shaking like a leaf! Glad it's over and I cant wait to get back home to NY!

Although I love spring, I hate this time of the year because of the bad weather we so often get. Like yesterday morning, we had high winds and rain and our power was out for 13 hours.
We get so much wind here, it's unbelievable.

I did too. Hopefully, it will not be used but an ounce of prevention goes a long way.

Thanks for the tips, Jenn Lynn. Severe weather is very scary to me -- I lived in a house as a kid that a tornado clipped the tip of our chimney on. We didn't know what was happening but ran to the front windows just in time to see the tornado continue it's downward path and demolish a house under construction across a field. I will never forget that sight.

Last summer, the sirens were going off in our area. The radio was reporting a touchdown in the next town over from us. I hustled all of the kids into the bathroom and my phone rang. It was a (former) friend telling me she was driving through town on her way to the library because the sirens were wrong, there was nothing to be concerned about. Notice I put the former in quotes? That says a lot.

I will definately look into having a Severe Weather Specialist come to talk to our Cub Scout Den. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cindy

Hi,

I tell you we had some wild weather here this weekend. 65 mph, trees down, tornadoes in hte area, Wow.

Last Easter weekend it was in the 30's.

To the poster that was in Mankato, I'm only about a hour from Mankato. Mankato area got hit pretty hard last night.

I got my parents a weather radio two years and and they always forget to turn it on!

::yes::

It was crazy here last night!! We didn't get it as hard as Mankato but that wind was really blowing and the storm was moving really fast!

Yep! I even did something different this year. I realized that all of our personal papers and important stuff was in a filing cabinet and not very well protected if our house was hit. I moved everthing to a secure and safe spot in the basement. After having friends that have been hit, I remember how hard it can be to get Birth Certificates & other important papers replaced.

I also keep a flashlight, water, etc..... handy during this season.

Now, before you all decide to rummage thru my basement to find the goods, let me assure you that these items are only valuable to me! I have pics of my parents 25th & 50th anniversaries, family pics & such, etc..... Nothing that a thief would be interested in.

I love a good storm! Bring 'em on!

I know Mankato got hit hard but thankfully no tornadoes. I'm only in Minnesota for business for another 3 weeks, then I go home to NY for a few days then off to my Disney Cruise and BCV for 5 days! I cant wait! I dont like this Midwest weather, lol.
