It's official: Little Mermaid on Broadway closes Aug 30

That's a shame...doesn't seem like a very long run for a Broadway show either :confused3

I have tickets for August 8th. I'm glad to be able to see the show before it leaves.

That's a shame. I guess children-based shows don't last long.

Well, it did get bad reviews when it opened. Lion King and Mary Poppins are still running and Beauty and the Beast had a long run. I think if the show is good it will have a good run and if it's not, then people aren't going to see it.

I would like to go see Mermaid before it closes - maybe work will send me back to Jersey and I can stay over for the weekend.

This is such a bummer! Had I known it was going to close, I would have made sure we saw it when we were in NYC a few months ago! I was really hoping to take DD and future DDiL to NYC and catch this show in the future! :sad2:

Oh no! But thx for letting us know. I was hoping to bring my 10 yr old niece to it next year, when she takes a mother-daughter trip to NYC. :sad2:

It's unlikely I'll be able to get there before mid-Aug, and I'm away after that. Phooey! :headache:

cheers,
:flower3:

No, shows that just aren't that great don't last long. While I enjoyed the show, and I found the actress who played Ursula to be fabulous, I found the main show numbers underwhelming ("Under the Sea" & "Kiss the Girl") and the finale ended with a thud. It was worth the 50% off tickets I got, but non-capacity audiences playing 50% price won't keep Mermaid afloat.

I found Mermaid to be a level above Tarzan, but a step below Beast.

Maybe Disney on Broadway should just stick to 2 shows at a time?

Anyhoo... What do you think would make a good next Disney on Broadway production?

I'm thinking Jungle Book.

I always thought that 'Hunchback' had songs that begged to be in a Broadway show. Then again, I really enjoyed the 'Hunchback' show that used to be at Disney-MGM, and that closed.

I like the idea of "Peter and the Starcatchers". I don't know the story, but I'd love to see a brand new production. Something that was not a movie. It'd be nice to see something fresh.

the closing of the little mermaid does not surprise me. The lead who played Ariel had an amazing voice but other than that the little mermaid on broadway was just dull. The costumes were unoriginal a bunch of black lighting and people rolling around on heelies and waving their arms to seem like they were swimming around. anyway as far as I am concerned no tear is being shed from me about this play closing. trust me broadway will quickly think of another movie to bring to broadway asap. In fact I wish there were more original plays on broadway imo there are not enough

A while back (I think even before Lion King), Disney on Broadway had a limited engagement of an original musical called King David. I'd love to see that come back. (I was annoyed I missed it.)
