It's MARVEL-ous on the MAGIC! Oct 2017 Canada Coast Cruise COMPLETE! See Ya Real Soon!

Yay! I'm so glad you got to try a Donair! I love roast chicken chips, but they are a bit of an acquired taste. ;) They are hard to find outside Atlantic Canada so I always stock up when I'm there.

Sounds like a lovely low key day in Sydney!

This sounds like an amazingly relaxing day!!!! It's kind of odd that they choose to dock where there are literally 3 suggested activities, but it sure looked beautiful in any case. Love the spa relaxation, and I bet it was wonderful having the place to yourselves!

We also decided to take it easy in Sydney. After breakfast on the Magic, we decided to walk around town a bit. The weather was beautiful and we decided to start out with a walk along the waterfront. There were a number of markers, plaques and memorials describing the maritime history of Sydney, including its significance as a convoy staging area during the First and Second World Wars. The history geek in me was happy to read all the information they had.

After the waterfront, we walked to town, but from where we were, it felt like we were walking straight up hill. Thought about going to the casino, but it was further away than we thought. After walking around town a bit we decided to start heading back to the Magic. We agreed to stop somewhere and have one local beer. That's when the fun and magic began.

We decided to stop for a beer at Governor's Pub & Eatery. We agreed, one beer and no food. The hostess asked if we wanted indoor or outdoor seating. We picked indoor. First or second floor? Second. (I grumbled about walking up stairs after climbing up the streets of town.) We sat down got a suggestion for a local brew and started to relax. Not many patrons and most seemed to be from the ship and rushing through lunch before going back. However we noticed that there was an area set up for musicians and sign outside the pub simply said "Chrissy." Well, despite the fact that my wife and I are music lovers, we figured that the show was later in the day and didn't think more it. Until...

Two musicians appeared, a fiddle player and a keyboard player. They started playing traditional Cape Breton tunes and the fiddle player's own compositions. The music was extraordinary and we simply could not leave without hearing more. So our quick one beer, no food agreement turned into several pints, a bowl of mussels (incredible) and a plate of oysters (fresh and delicious) and an extended stay at the pub, a chat with the musicians and extremely fond memories of Sydney. The musicians were Chrissy Crowley (fiddle) and Mario Colosimo (keyboard and guitar). It turns out that she is an award winning musician and very well known in that area.

Some times the best things are those you just stumble upon.

Looks like a great day ... take it easy days are my favorite. Looks like a beautiful town and some yummy treats. Very cool that you got to try some local delicacies. I'm trying to imagine what roast chicken chips would taste like. Hurrah for more spa time - it looks so beautiful and relaxing. I love how Steve enjoys it too. LOL on second lunch -- no calories on a cruise!!

Nothing like a good ol' "take it easy" day on a cruise...even at port! It was nice that it was sandwiched between two very busy port days.
It was a lovely day and the port was very small - the town also seemed very small but we only saw a small portion of it.
Roast chicken chips are just very savory-tasting. You know Chicken in a Biscuit? It has similar seasonings but with rosemary, that's how I can best describe it. I would have really liked it without so much rosemary.
Loved the spa - I really sought to treat myself on this cruise by saving up all my Disney gift cards I got for birthdays and such, hehe.
Steve loved the unlimited crab legs at Cabanas. I think he always got some every day, even if it were just by himself.

What a nice, relaxing day! I'd have done the double yogurt, too! Besides, it's healthy, right? ::yes::

It looks healthy, so it MUST be healthy right? This also applies to jams, strawberry milkshakes, and desserts with fruit in it, like pie. :D

Is all of Canada beautiful? I'm starting to think so.

Yes, it apparently is!

Sounds like a lovely time at the spa, excited to hear more about your day! :thumbsup2

:)

I'm so glad you got in some good quality Canadian junk food!! Especially the garlic fingers...nom! Sounds like you had a nice relaxing day. :) I haven't been to Sydney yet (we're actually going in a few weeks for Nathan's work) but Nathan's been there quite a few times and I know there's not a whole lot going on there outside of the expected small seaside town stuff. Sometimes there's some cool Celtic music stuff going on in the summer. If you're ever back in Cape Breton, there are some beautiful hiking trails from what I've heard on parts of the Cabot Trail. And there's the Alexander Bell house/museum in Baddeck. But I've never done either of those things. :P All I really know about in Sydney is the giant fiddle. lol :charac2:

It was all really tasty and good! Thanks again! I hope you enjoy Sydney! I'm not sure what else there is to do there but at least we saw the fiddle, LOL.
Yeah we were thinking if we ever to this itinerary again that we'd do one of the excursions that included a hike around the Cabot Trail. Not that I hike a lot though, I'm more of an "enjoys to be driven around" type tourist, haha.

You had some absolutely gorgeous weather that day, you lucked out!!

It was a beautiful day! We had amazing weather in all ports. We were lucky.

Oh my god, Roast chicken potato chips are my fave lol I actually HATE ketchup chips (how uncanadian of me!) I agree though, you need to like the flavour of rosemary haha

Haha yeah I wasn't expecting the flavor of rosemary though. But I guess a lot of roast chicken does have rosemary in it, so that's probably why I don't eat a lot of roast chicken, unless I have a chance to at least smell or taste it beforehand. Ketchup chips are fine to me. They are kinda like BBQ chips. I am a chip purist for the most part though and I like to eat plain chips most of the time.

That fiddle is enormous! Almost towers over the ship :rotfl2: well, not quite!

Yeah, it's really interesting why they chose to build a giant fiddle, but I guess they needed something touristy for the area.

Ok, I'm really curious about these chicken potato chips. I'll have to remember to keep an eye out for Canadians in my cruise groups.

I know, I was too! It's like Chicken in a Biscuit but with rosemary undertones...does that make sense?:)

Yay! I'm so glad you got to try a Donair! I love roast chicken chips, but they are a bit of an acquired taste. ;) They are hard to find outside Atlantic Canada so I always stock up when I'm there.

It was fun to try everything, thanks again for the recs!! It's definitely interesting. I eat steak-flavored chips from the UK and I really like them, so I thought I'd like these too.

Sounds like a lovely low key day in Sydney!

It definitely was a lovely day!

That sounds like an amazing experience! It's always so fun when you stumble upon unexpected things like this while traveling. Sounds like a great musical trio plus you got a delicious lunch to boot. Am I imagining it or is all seafood there just 10x better? I really like just wandering around on our own as well - that is more our style, whereas my in-laws tend to do a lot of tours, so that day was especially nice to go at our own pace. It looks like you had a magical afternoon, what did you do in Halifax?

You guys look adorable in your Halloween costumes, and you make a beautiful Belle :-)

Mike and I are doing a HOTHS cruise in October and now I'm stressing about figuring out costumes, I'm so bad at dressing up and when we went last October we just didn't bother :rotfl:

I love those boots you picked up! I have wide calves too and can never find tall boots that fit me, either :sad2:

Canada looks so beautiful, especially in the fall with all the colors, and it seems like you guys lucked out with just perfect weather. Mike is Canadian and has family up there but I don't think he's ever been. He would probably enjoy this type of cruise…I'll just add it to my ever-growing list of places I want to visit!

In Halifax, we went on the official excursion to Peggy's Cove and the Titanic Cemetery.

It was a wonderful relaxing day. There were more port adventures that you can sign up for, but we didn't, and the walking map they gave only had like 3 things on it, LOL. I guess this is one of those places where a port adventure is HIGHLY recommended, LOL, but we were ok with not doing much and I got to try some new snacks and spend more time on the ship which is A-ok for me!
Yes! Being in the spa on an un-crowded ship meant lots of attention!

You guys look adorable in your Halloween costumes, and you make a beautiful Belle :-)

Aww thank you so much! That is really sweet. :)

Mike and I are doing a HOTHS cruise in October and now I'm stressing about figuring out costumes, I'm so bad at dressing up and when we went last October we just didn't bother :rotfl:

You guys will have so much fun! I think you will look fantastic in whatever you pick out! I just bought costumes online, it's easy.

I love those boots you picked up! I have wide calves too and can never find tall boots that fit me, either :sad2:

Haha I dont' think any part of you could be considered wide. I have big appendages (arms, legs) which is so annoying as it's hard to hide!

Maritime Canada is gorgeous! I think you should definitely try this cruise. It was a fun and different itinerary - and I actually like the cold weather cruises!

Yes!!! Finally someone who gets it. ;)

Oh I GET it. :)

Great report! Another Canadian here that has not taken advantage of what our great country has to offer. Note to self: visit the maritime provinces.

Thank you!! Yes! It's so beautiful in that area. I need to visit again!

In Halifax, we went on the official excursion to Peggy's Cove and the Titanic Cemetery.

Ah cool, We did the 7-hour Peggy's cove which included the lobster lunch and the visit to the maple syrup factory.

As a Titanic nut, I can't believe I didn't even think to ask if you had visited there, Su-Lynn!! @DUHgreg I would love to visit there some time in my life!

I definitely thought about it! Next time we will have to do all stuff Titanic. I didn't know if the in-laws would care for it so we didn't do the cemetery or museum.

If you ever do, you've got an automatic coffee date here in Halifax! :)

I'm crashing your date with @missjackiemcg!!

Day 5 Part 2: From Tangled to Thug-O!

After my spa treatments and a quick stint in the Rainforest room, I returned to our stateroom, showered and got ready for that evening. Tonight's show was Tangled the Musical and we did not want to miss that! I got some pictures out on our verandah as we were leaving port:

I am wearing a swimsuit cover-up, lol. Though we didn't go to the pools, I just used it to get ready in.

We brought binoculars, which is highly recommended if you have a balcony cabin, and it was great to look around with when leaving ports. Definitely a must bring when we go to Alaska next year!

Soon after I headed to the Atrium by myself, think Steve was still in the room or with his parents. I'm so glad I did as I spotted a certain King:

Black Panther was just roaming around Deck 4 - so cool! We had a conversation about Wakanda. I asked about the vibranium reserves (fictional metal used to make his suit and Cap's shield), and he assured me there was plenty of it in Wakanda. I also asked who would win in a fight, him or Captain America? He said he wouldn't want to fight Cap as they are friends, but he thinks it would be a pretty equal match. I was really impressed with how much he knew about his character. :thumbsup2

I love the Atrium in the evenings. All the action is here, there is live music and the vibe is great!

I met Steve and his parents in front of the Walt Disney theater so we could head in and get seats for Tangled the Musical. I, of course, had my trusty Marvel popcorn bucket.

Tangled was awesome! It's definitely the best show on the Magic. The production was awesome and everyone knows the songs!

Right after the show you can meet Rapunzel. She was meeting at the balcony area over the atrium on Deck 4 and there was a line to get pictures with her.

After meeting Rapunzel we headed to dinner for that night...it was the Drawn to Life show at Animator's Palate! Very excited for this. We had done this on the Fantasy but our previous cruise on the Magic was only 5 nights so we did not get to do this before on this ship. When you sit down, the place mats are your drawing board. You're supposed to complete your drawing before they start serving the appetizers so about 15-20 minutes or so after you sit down.

After we submitted our drawings to our service team, we were each given a trio of appetizers. It was all the same appetizer for everyone that night, although if you had allergies or were vegetarian I think they would have substituted something else.

As an addition, our service team brought out a plate of fried rice for our table. They said it was a special order for us, but we had never requested it. However it was certainly a welcome treat. I think it was part of the crew meal for that day.

It was ok, not really that great, but it was the thought that counts!

So when we had lobster on the Fantasy, we were able to get seconds or even thirds of the lobsters, they were steadily bringing out lobsters to us! However, tonight when Steve and his dad asked for another, they were like, Oh we'll have to check to see if there's any left...I'm not sure...etc. But I'm pretty sure they had some extra lobsters, our late dining was only about 60% full. In they end they did bring out extra lobsters but I thought it was strange they said they ran out of something...they never run out of anything!

As a dessert I got the molten chocolate cake. It was quite good.

In order to enter, you had to say a password, which I think they told us during the Tangled show. But I forgot it so I had to wait until someone else said it first, haha. I can't even begin to remember what the password was but it was like some sort of nonsensical phrase.

They had transformed O'Gills a bit with signs and banners, and lots of thugs wandering around.

You can also play Thug-O which is the thug version of Bingo. Of course.

I wanted to order something off the menu but it was so crowded and I think only one bartender so I gave up after a while.

The thugs put on a good show and we had a few rounds of Thug-O. We did not win though.

I would suggest if you wanted to get the best experience out of the Snuggly Duckling is to head there early to grab a table and drinks. We could only find some space at one of the counter areas and I think we had to stand. It's definitely a popular night!

After rounds of Thug-O that we did not win, we headed back to our room.

Tonight's towel animal:

We were headed to our final port tomorrow, Halifax!! (Hi @MeghanEmily!) We were signed up for a 7 hour port adventure to visit a seaside village called Peggy's Cove, a lobster lunch, and a maple syrup factory. Whew, sounds like a long but fun day!

Stay tuned!

Gorgeous picture of you two! :cutie:

It was a tomato, spaghetti, and meatball soup
Yum - this looks delish! :thumbsup2

As a dessert I got the molten chocolate cake. It was quite good.
Even more delish!!!

Sounds like a fun night! I'm excited to read about your 7 hour tour the next day... especially the maple syrup factory. I used to LOVE the show Unwrapped, so I'm sure I'd be super excited about that part :hyper:
