What does Disney do with all the money that is thrown into the water?

I'm hoping they donate it or something of the like.

It's been reported here in the past that it is given to charity. I have no reason not to believe that.

1) They collect the coins from all the fountains and rides.
2) They then give the money to different charities.
3) This has been going on since Opening Day.

They have signs at Disneyland stating that they give the coins to charity, so I assume WDW does the same.

When I was staring intently (haha) at all the change in it is a small world, most of the change I saw was severely rusted and to the point of not being recognizable. How can that possibly go to a charity if it is not recognizable anymore?

Our last trip was sadly almost 3 years ago, and all three of my kids gave some of their own money to these fountains. We were wondering too, so we asked and they said it goes to charity. I am sure it does...

I asked one of the IASM CMs this question in August. He said he had worked there for several years, and periodically they do collect all of the money to donate. It often exceeds $100,000 in one cleaning. MAW was the specific charity he mentioned as a principle beneficiary of the change. I thought that was really cool.

Coins are designed to be durable. I doubt a few years in water makes them worthless. By the way, I'd love to see that coin-counting operation.

I don't even think US coins rust, except for maybe old coins that had iron in them. Anyone know for sure?

we have been told all coins in any fountain or rides go to charity and coins may turn color in water but they all are fine once cleaned off

One day we were bored so we took the Ferry for a ride from Magic Kingdom to TTC. One of the Silver Citizen CM was very talkative, and we asked him question upon question.................finally the question about money came up.
All that money thrown on the pillars before the ferry docks and 30 times as much in the water around the dock. He said when he first started there about 12 years ago, they collected all the change from the water and donated it to charity........................later that week all the cast members were treated to a casual party..............pizza and such.
He said the charity had to make out like a bandit, all the silver pulled up, and imagine all the change they were not able to get.
We believed him, but, once I heard a CM say when they are asked a question they dont know the answer too they just make up the answer because tourist will believe anything.

I'm trying to imagine what that would look like in stacks of pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, and assorted foreign coins. I can't believe there's really that much! Then again, I've seen people make a game out of trying to land coins on certain platforms. It's an attraction in itself.

Haha, funny you mentioned the ferry... we wondered about that too! I'd hate to be the person who goes in that water to collect it though.
