2nd October 2008
Had a bit of a lie in this morning (not like we're on holiday or anything..!) then packed the car before checking out and heading to the Block At Orange for 10:30am. Yep it's a mall but an outdoor one so it doesn't feel quite as 'samey' as some of the normal indoor ones can. I spent way too much money in Old Navy and Torrid while Steve had a wander (probably involved the huge Virgin Megastore in the complex!) We met up again and drove to Red Robin for lunch: I had the blue ribbon burger and Steve had a mushroom swiss boca (veggie) burger and we both had a blueberry pomegranate limeade which was a non-alcoholic cocktail, though they did have plenty of alcoholic ones for those not driving. All the burgers in Red Robin come with bottomless steak fries which are soo yummy and the whole meal was well worth the $40ish bill. Fed and watered, we set off for Las Vegas which is probably the most straightforward long drive i've ever done.. Even used the cruise control for a while (oh the novelty!!) We had planned to stop at Calico on the way but after following the first sign couldn't seem to find it so, not wanting to drive aimlessly into the desert, we continued on to Las Vegas...
Mountains in the distance
Are we there yet?!
Shows how straight the road is
We never got to see the famous Las Vegas neon sign so this will have to do!
We arrived at our hotel, the Gold Coast, at around 5:30pm. After checking in and unpacking a bit we decided to have a look around.. I think we were the only ones under pension age in the casino which is likely down to the massive bingo hall there (sadly I didn't get round to playing!) We had a go on the '1 cent' slots, which actually cost $1 to play, and I won 18 cents. I didn't cash it in but I did keep it for my scrapbook because hey I may never win again!! We had some dinner at a little noodle place in the casino which was very nice and excellent value for money, much better than PF Changs for sure! Steve had a 'bento box' which contained aubergine and tofu in garlic sauce, rice, bok choy in sauce and a fortune cookie and I had mushroom and vegetable noodles. The portions were huge, way more than either of us could finish unfortunately (we'd chosen this place as we fancied something a bit lighter!) and the bill was $40ish. After dinner we checked out the hotel's bowling alley (this and the cheap rates were pretty much our reason for staying here!) to see how much it was.. Cheap was the answer and we decided we'd for sure bowl tomorrow, but tonight was the Ugly Betty (my favourite show) season premiere so it was back to the room to watch that before bed.
View from our hotel room.. Strip is in the distance (including the Stratosphere tower which incidentally we never ended up visiting!)
