It Wasn’t My Fault That I Cheated…It was My Husband’s

I must confess because confession is good for the soul. I love the Fort, and it was a lapse in judgment on the part of my husband. We cheated on the Fort, but I NEVER planned for this to happen. It was HIS fault!

It all started in February 2020 when I told my husband I wanted him to plan my birthday trip for 2021 because I was turning 50. He chooses Disney, while I was thinking Paris, Greece, Australia (you get the picture). A week before I we leave for my secretive birthday trip, I found out where we were going. I get the mail, and the Magical Express envelope was in there. I then log on to my Disney App and the gig was up.

Four nights at the Contemporary Resort. I can bore you with all the things I did not like about the resort, but what’s the point? I will say that we compared the Fort to every little thing we found “wrong” with the Contemporary. Alas, it is Disney and we had fun.

Good points.
  • I celebrated my 50th birthday the same year that Disney turns 50.
  • We got to go on the ROTR on our first try.
  • I got to eat at my favorite restaurant despite hubby not making any dinner reservations. 557714
  • I finally got some Minnie Mouse Disney Ears to wear with my Minnie Mouse outfit.557715
  • My birthday flowers lasted the plane ride from Florida to Atlanta to Columbus.

As an added bonus… Hubby booked us on first class plane seats. I’ve always wanted to ride first class. The captain announced to the passengers that it was my 50th birthday and wrote me a special note.

We vow not to cheat on the Fort ever again (unless we get a FABULOUS deal that we cannot pass up).

Stayed Grand Floridian in 2018. Just DW and I. Felt way out of place. It was nice, but not comfortable. Didn't rest well for some reason and no peaceful morning walks either.

Well Done Hubby! To keep it a secret all those months until the very end is IMPRESSIVE. And in the middle of the Covid debacle... you are one outstanding partner.

But, I regret to announce you have set the bar WAY TO HIGH for the rest of us "average" spouses to achieve or exceed. None the less, congrats on a special vacation. Well done, Mouseketeer. Well done!

:bday: Benita!

We did the Carribbean Beach Resort in 2018 when DD worked in the College Program for a semester and got us a 40% discount for a room. We had to try out the WDW hotel style and it wasn't for me.

As long as DH or you book your next visit to WDW back at the Fort, things will be okay here for you. :rolleyes1

So glad you enjoyed your birthday trip! BUUUTT...as you 2 concluded there's no place like "home' , the Fort, of course.
Because of pandemic we got a great deal at the Riviera Resort. And, although the rooms were beautiful, we concluded that we will not be skipping the Fort again.

:bday:, Benita,

Hubby did well!

And don't feel too bad about cheating. I've done it a number of times. :) It's nice to have a little variety. :P

I actually enjoy staying at the other resorts once in a while. I would really like to check out Beach Club or Boardwalk, but the Fort just has a special feel that is hard to beat. We had a trip booked a year ago at POFQ, but Covid happened. I would like to stay there too. I love the New Orleans feel.

Ultimately, I'm too cheap. I looked at a Moderate or even a Value when I just booked a Jan 2022 trip. The Fort was still considerably cheaper. It is kind of sad when $140/night for a campground is considered cheap.

Happy birthday! And its not cheating if no one tells. Glad you had a great time.

When our family started visiting Disney, we had no rv, and so we stayed at the hotels. Our two oldest daughters remember those days, our youngest, not so much. Our youngest often mentions staying at the hotels to try them out; we are just not interested.

How did you enjoy your desserts - favour one over the other?

I don't like chocolate, so it's hard for me to find a dessert. Also I consider myself a meat and potato gal. With that being said, the cinnamon cupcake (from Contempo Cafe) was better than the cheesecake (from Armorette). If I had the choice, I would save my money for a nice cocktail.

Happy birthday. DW and I stayed at the Contemporary back before it's big refurb and before we got back into the camping community. Like teamubr stated, a little Disney variety is good but we always seem to go back to the Fort. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

This is my new computer background. Love it!

Oh then you HAVE to get tiggerdad to tell you the story while we are at Pigeon Forge of how he became such a squirrel whisperer for those little guys at Fort Wilderness. I think it goes back to his very first trip there. A true legend was born then and it only grows bigger with every re-telling. ::yes::

Once he gets to talking about it, though, the problem becomes reigning him back in .... :crazy2: But it is funny when he tells it in person.

We'll have to talk about that one night we are there for sure. Quite coincidence I assure you, but for some reason it just stuck. That family of squirrels from site 420 had no idea what they were creating!

I just love the squirrels there. We had a squirrel try to climb on our lap :scared::sunny: while eating a Mickey bar and I was screaming, literally, and laughing hysterically at the same time . You don't realize it's the little things you remember there but the squirrels are such a charming part of the Fort even if annoying hehe. Miss the Fort so much and the squirrels :squirrel::D
