I've heard of Scotch eggs but never seen a photo like yours. I have never, ever, ever wanted to try one until just this minute! Em and I have an ADR in August so if the mood hits me just right I may go for it.

Please tell Mr. Roma that the proper way to eat the Belgian waffle is definitely WITH whip cream. Such yummy looking F&W selections.

I'm looking forward to your Kona breakfast since that is my ALL TIME favorite breakfast restaurant at WDW.

I'm not entirely sure how we shared looking back. I know we both really liked it so our usual routine of me taking a bite, Mr. Roma taking a bite, and then Mr. Roma deciding I can "have the rest" didn't work .

You must try a Scotch egg at least once. They are fascinating little delicacies, and the Rose & Crown does a nice job with the presentation and the accompaniments. You can get them either in the main restaurant or at the pub (like I did).

I don't know what Mr. Roma's problem is when it comes to the whipped cream. Who wants to eat a plain waffle?

I was so, so looking forward to Kona as well... we had some bumps in the road though that diminished the experience . Oh well - that just means we will have to go back and try again!

Kona Cafe​

For our second sit-down breakfast, Mr. Roma and I decided to visit Kona based on the generally positive reviews it gets here on the Dis. The Tonga Toast was also begging for me to come eat it, so the choice wasn't difficult !

We had planned to eat at Kona right at 7:30 so we could make it to the Animal Kingdom by 9:00 for rope drop. We were late getting out the door, but still managed to arrive right when they opened (and when our reservation was). The lobby was packed with people - at least eight groups were there already. I wasn't worried though because the restaurant was empty and there was plenty of room.

I started to grow annoyed, however, when the time started to creep by and people that came in after us started to be seated. After close to twenty minutes (!!) of waiting past our reservation time I went back up to the hostess stand to ask why we hadn't been seated. They had my reservation up and ready so there was no confusion over it being lost. We proceeded to wait another ten minutes while the hostesses milled around the stand and the dining area. I finally had to insist that we be seated because we had no more time to wait. At this point I was praying we would get a quick server because we had about twenty minutes to wrap everything up in order to get to the AK in time.

Unfortunately, our server appeared frazzled and rushed from the beginning and took forever to come to our table and get our drink orders. I wasted no time telling him we wanted to share the Tonga Toast because I had no clue when we might see him again. Sure enough, an eternity passed before he returned (sans Tonga Toast) and we had to press him to see if our food was going to be ready anytime soon. Meanwhile, everyone that had been there when we had originally arrived was already gone !!

Mercifully our Tonga Toast finally arrived, and its deliciousness made up for the disaster proceeding it.

Tonga Toast - banana stuffed sourdough bread, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with Strawberry Compote and your choice of ham, bacon, or sausage $12.99​

This was my half of the toast (as you've probably already guessed since Mr. Roma has shared his dislike for "toppings"), and as you can see I made liberal use of the strawberry compote. I drizzled it on and then proceeded to dip individuals bites of the toast as well as my fruit in the bowl. The toast itself was warm inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. The bananas and cinnamon added the right touch of sweetness (as if the strawberry compote wasn't enough!) and believe it or not I was plenty filled by this small looking portion. The sausage was thankfully warm but your routine breakfast meat fair.

The token time our server returned we hurriedly asked for the check, but the entire payment process still ended up taking another ten minutes. By the time we were done at Kona, it was 8:40!!! We had to high tail it to Animal Kingdom and we seriously made it just in the very nick of time.

I really loved the Tonga Toast and am not ready to give up on Kona based on this one serving snafu. I'm sure Mr. Roma would also like to return so he can have a Tonga Toast to himself and not have to share. As it is I'm not sure I'll be able to resist the macadamia nut pancakes the next time around!

After what was another late night at Epcot, I'll admit I wasn't super chipper the next morning. (Kind of a recurring theme, right?) But the wife promised me some excellent french toast - a personal favorite - so that at least got me out of bed.

We had already visited the Polynesian resort, so the atmosphere and setting were familiar. Good thing, because I don't think I was very awake. I will say I didn't think the restaurant was themed super well - it was kind of bland compared to the resort itself, but not in a way that ruined things.
We did have a little trouble getting seated - despite having a reservation, they somehow how mixed us up at the hostess check in and we had to wait for almost a half hour. That put us in a rush. It was a clear mix up on their part, and we were a little perturbed.

As I briefly hinted at in my food and wine snippets, I'm not a huge fan of "stuff" on my food - what you people call toppings. So I did protest a little when my wife insisted we share the tonga toast. I relented for the good of the order.

Despite the "stuff" - bananas and strawberries, in our case - I did enjoy the tonga toast. It was very satisfying, the sourdough bread was very filling and added a lot to the meal. The cinnamon on top of the deep-fried bread gave it a good crunchy feeling that I enjoyed a lot.

The sausage was a nice little side dish.

Being rushed did dampen the mood a little bit, but overall, it was an enjoyable breakfast.

Jalapeño Cream Cheese Pretzel​

This pretzel was on my "must do" list of snacks (which wasn't very long since we didn't have the stomach capacity or time to tackle everything that might have caught our eye!) and luckily we were both hungry enough midway through our jaunt through Animal Kingdom to justify one. Mr. Roma was skeptical at first, but I managed to convince him it would be worth it.

Jalapeño Cream Cheese Pretzel $4.29 (??) ​

This did not disappoint! I don't usually gravitate towards jalapeños so I was worried they would overpower the pretzel, but that wasn't the case at all. There was just enough flavor to give the cream cheese a little more depth, and it paired so wonderfully with the warm bread - which was the right texture, neither too soft nor too hard. I'm sure your mileage may vary depending on how long these have sat out, but if they are as popular as they seem, I don't think they last very long. I gladly polished off my half and would have gone for more if we hadn't already planned on frequenting Earl of Sandwich later!

I'll credit the Animal Kingdom Jalapeno Cream Cheese Pretzel for inspiring me to love pretzels like I never did before. This was an interesting mid-morning snack - not very typical. To me, a pretzel is more like Saturday afternoon baseball game food. But this one was good. The jalapeno gave it some kick, the cream cheese made it moist and the pretzel was warm and soft. I enjoyed it a lot. Ever since, we've been buying pretzel rolls from the grocery store every time they're available at the deli. I blame Disney world.

I too struggle to understand what the big hold up was that morning . I try to be as accommodating as possible when it is obvious that things are busy or the staff is stretched thin... but that wasn't an issue here. I'm hoping that next time things go more smoothly.

I do recall Mr. Roma got a little snippy with me at Kona because I was insisting that he put the compote on his toast . This is a constant battle!

Mmmmm that is my favorite snack in the World! I wish I had one right now...

Earl of Sandwich​

All right, I'll admit it... I'm an Earl of Sandwich fan girl. Say what you will about it being "no better than Quizno's" (oh how I beg to differ!), I still love the place. In fact, it just occurred to me that I've been to EoS on each of my three trips to WDW - a distinction no other restaurant holds. I'm pretty pumped they have one at Disneyland now so I won't break the tradition when we visit this fall.

A nasty side effect of my EoS passion is that I probably risked killing the chance to ever go again by talking it up too much to Mr. Roma. I had tried really hard not to "oversell" anything prior to our trip, but I think I dropped the ball when it came to EoS. I'm fairly certain Mr. Roma threatened that he would never go again if our lunch that day ended up failing.

So with everything riding on the line, we left Animal Kingdom about mid-day and headed over. We had seen everything we wanted to see at AK, so we planned on just spending the rest of the afternoon in DtD. We found a parking spot fairly easily (a major turnaround from the parking nightmare from our first night!) and headed over to the restaurant.

As is always the case at EoS, the line was ridiculous. Mr. Roma was very annoyed about this because he was starving at this point and huge lines like this don't typically turn around very fast. I tried to reassure him that the line actually moved fairly quickly, and I was right. It wasn't long at all before we were at the counter ordering. We got a discount on the already more than reasonable prices with our AAA card! We then found a seat inside (easily accomplished by eyeballing people who seem to be close to finished) and only had to wait a few minutes before our buzzer went off.

Despite my promises to always branch out and try something new, I ended up ordering what I always get:

The Earls Club - turkey, smoked bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce and sandwich sauce $5.99

I seriously love this sandwich. The way the bread ends up enveloping the ingredients during the toasting process is really what makes it stand out I think. It's somewhat of a struggle to describe standard ingredients like turkey and bacon in a way that makes it sound "better than usual," but trust me - it is. I've eaten turkey and bacon sandwiches at pretty much every major sandwich chain and plenty of local places where I live, and none of them hits the spot like this one does. I actually had a Turkey sub at Subway today, and I refuse to even compare them in my mind because poor Subway can't hold a candle.

I also could not leave EoS without picking up a cup of this:

Potato Salad $1.99 ​

Now I rarely meet a potato or a potato dish I don't like, but I absolutely detest mustard-based, celery loaded potato salads. I find them repulsive. Unfortunately it is very hard to find a mayonnaise-based potato salad where I live, so I'm forced to rely on Mr. Roma's mother to satisfy my cravings (In case you're wondering why I don't make my own - my waistline wouldn't survive).

This, however, is probably the pinnacle of mayonnaise-based potato salads. I had unabashedly bragged on this potato salad to Mr. Roma to the point where I'm pretty sure he started taking offense on behalf of his mother, but after one bite he quickly realized why I am such a fan. This stuff is amazing. If you like your potato salads sans a bunch of "extras," this is the one for you. It still has some celery in it but it is far from overpowering. It really is the ideal ratio of potato, mayonnaise, celery, and seasonings.

I tried a bite of Mr. Roma's sandwich and liked it as well. I'm not the biggest roast beef fan though so I wouldn't get it for myself.

We ended the meal with a:

Peanut Butter Brownie Cream Sandwich $2.49 ​

This typically gets good reviews but I think we ended up with a dud. The brownie was really dry and crumbly and the peanut butter was hard (I'm pretty sure you can tell from the picture!). Isn't the peanut butter supposed to be creamy on this? Had it been the brownie might have been worth saving but overall it was a disappointment for us. I'm tempted to try it again though to see if we get a fresher one.

I'm happy to report that we left EoS with Mr. Roma a newly converted believer in its wonders, and we will definitely be back (both at DL and WDW).

Earl of Sandwich might have been talked up more than any other restaurant pre-trip, so any criticisms here are the results of super high expectations - though I think you'll find very few.

The line was freaking out the door and then some. I guess it is good, huh? After snaking back and forth for what seemed like ages, we finally got to order.

I had:

The Full Montagu - roast beef and turkey with sharp cheddar ceese and aged Swiss cheese, romaine lettuce, roma tomato and Earl's mustard sauce $5.99​

I really enjoy roast beef sandwiches and liked the idea of cheddar and swiss cheese. It was a great sandwich. The bread was harder than I liked - I like a soft bread - but very good. The mustard sauce made the sandwich moist. All together it was a different combination!

The best part of the meal was definitely the potato salad. I like to think my mom makes a good potato salad (in fact, I think my mom's potato salad and the Earl of Sandwich potato salad probably compete for my wife's favorite).

The peanut butter brownie cream sandwich was okay, a nice topper for the meal.

Earl of Sandwich somehow managed to live up to the high expectations. And I can't wait to visit the one in Disneyland!

So you are saying that you don't like mustard and celery based potato salad? I happen to love that version! I suppose we can't be friends now.

I was sooooo very happy when our DTD finally opened an EoS. Now I don't have to go to Vegas or WDW to get one of their delicious sandwiches. There is something so wonderful and delicous about their bread.

That PB brownie cookie really looks great. I love the cupcake coronets myself but it's time for me to branch out and try something new.

I am glad you said hat about the peanut butter brownie. We had one last week and it was not good! It was hard and very dry. My husband will eat anything and even he said it was gross. Our sandwiches were very good though and it's an affordable place to get a great lunch.

Would you believe that one of the first questions Mr. Roma asked when I started talking about going to Disneyland was whether or not there was an EoS there .

There does seem to be a huge potato salad divide between us! We'll just have to agree to disagree for the sake of all other good Disney food .

I'm glad they are expanding more on the West Coast. Now if they could start building more outside of northeastern airports (preferably with the first one being right next to my house) then we would be golden!

The PB brownie did look very good and I only wish the taste had lived up to it! I know other people have really liked these so I think we just got a dud .

Mickey Rice Krispie Treat from Goofy's Candy Kitchen​

After touring DtD for a while I decided we should make a stop at Goofy's Candy Kitchen. There was only one thing on my mind!

Mickey Rice Krispie Treat - Dipped in Dark Chocolate, rolled in mini M&Ms and drizzled with dark chocolate​

Why yes, I do like dark chocolate . I seriously have dreams about this thing when I'm craving a sweet treat at home. I can only stomach a bite or two at a time though because it is so incredibly sweet! I took it home and nibbled on it for about a week .

In case you are wondering Mr. Roma was appalled by the amount of chocolate I put on this thing and therefore refused to have a bite. I was not complaining - all the more for me!



Up Next: Dinner at Boma

I've only had a custom krispie treat once from Goofy's Candy Co. and I couldn't finish it since it was just way overdone with the layers of candy. If I hadn't tried these myself I would think someone was crazy to say they could only take a few bites at a time. Now those dipped pretzels.. oh my goodness! I love those!

Boma​

I had dinner at Boma with my family on our first trip to WDW, and we all felt like it was one of the superior buffets on Disney property. I knew we didn't want to eat at another signature restaurant that night, but we still wanted to get out and see another resort. Boma seemed like the perfect compromise, and I knew that Mr. Roma would be up for the more unique offerings.

Our main failure, of course, was completely failing to write down anything that we consumed - apologies in advance for the lack of description!

My first plate​

Starting from the top, I believe I had the prime rib with mustard sauce, mini cornbread muffins, mashed potatoes, bobotie, some type of sweet potato bake, and then mealie pap.

Our shared fruit/hummus plate​

My prime rib was great and the perfect texture - easy to slice and not stringy or chewy. It paired wonderfully with the mustard sauce. I really like cornbread and I was glad I snagged two muffins because they were excellent . The mashed potatoes were fairly standard but good. The bobotie was a bit of a disappointment because I prefer it warm and this was cold. I can't remember the sweet potatoes, which means they weren't memorable. I love the mealie pap and ended up getting a small second portion (and another cornbread muffin... ).

For our shared plate I chose the red pepper hummus and some type of yogurt fruit salad. We both loved the hummus and Mr. Roma had seconds later. I ended up getting freaked out by the yogurt salad (I always convince myself it has sat out too long and has gone bad) so I didn't eat more than a few bites.

We both had seconds of a few things (which we failed to take pictures of) before getting dessert.

Mr. Roma's dessert plate​

Now I'm sure you are wondering why I'm sharing Mr. Roma's plate and not mine... after all, I think we have established I am the dessert fanatic in the relationship . The truth is I completely devoured half of my plate before I took a picture, and it ended up looking rather unpleasant. The good news is Mr. Roma and I had practically identical plates, except I had a zebra dome and cinnamon chocolate tart instead of the lemon tart. Mr. Roma's bread pudding (on the bottom) was much better than mine, which came from the end of the pan and way too dry. I really liked the apple cobbler and the little pumpkin pastry (far right). I do believe the little brown square was some type of coffee tasting cream but I'm not entirely sure. I did like it though! I really liked the zebra dome, but definitely couldn't stomach more than one. The cinnamon chocolate was good but very strong - again, couldn't eat more than one. Mr. Roma said he really liked the lemon tart.

Boma was just as good for me this time as it was on my first visit, but it isn't a "must do" for me by any means. I'm sure we will be back again but probably not for a few more trips.

Mr. Roma says:​

Walking in, you can't help but be impressed by the atmosphere. It's very unique and really sets the mood for the tasty - but mostly unidentifiable food you're about to eat.

I started with another whiskey sour, but it wasn't nearly as good as what I had at the California Grill. Too bad though, right?

I guess our biggest mistake was not writing everything down - I don't remember what anything was called. I enjoyed the soup and especially liked the hummus and bread - which I recommended to someone else on a second trip back to the buffet.

The entire experience was pretty exciting - though I have a feeling some of the stuff wasn't completely traditional. Mashed potatoes anyone? We tried some new things and left pretty happy.

After that, we played golf. I'm not a great golfer. I mostly play the Par 3 at home and visit the driving range. This putt-putt course put me through the paces, but was a lot of fun. I got a daffy duck ball on the way out. Definitely doing this again!

I've only had a custom krispie treat once from Goofy's Candy Co. and I couldn't finish it since it was just way overdone with the layers of candy. If I hadn't tried these myself I would think someone was crazy to say they could only take a few bites at a time. Now those dipped pretzels.. oh my goodness! I love those!

I'm looking forward to hearing about your Boma dinner!

The custom rice krispie treats really are a bit much for one person - hence my consumption over a week . I have no clue how people finish one of these in one day, let alone one sitting! I wish Mr. Roma would have shared but he would have none of it! I really love dipped pretzels as well though so I think I will get some of those next time.

Yay! A Boma dinner review. I was really looking forward to this since we have a nite or two while at AKL with no dinner plans and I'm just not sure about Boma for a meal other than breakfast. Your review definitely has me considering it. I just may have to ask the server to pop my bobotie in the microwave for a quick zap.

Ok, I have to ask a dumb question and I'm too lazy to look this up myself but what is mealy pap? It looks like a creamy consistency.

Ahhh I noticed they don't offer any mustard based potato salad - how sad!

Where was golf?

I definitely think you should give Boma a try for dinner! It is on the upper end of the scale as far as buffets go, and they really do have some very interesting choices - particularly in the soup department! I'm pretty sure Mr. Roma's soup was the butternut squash, but they rotate between upwards of fifteen different soups throughout the week. I should have waited for them to bring out a fresher bobotie pan but I was too impatient .

I would say mealie pap (I'm probably spelling it wrong) is in the grits family. It is a type of porridge/polenta made out of maize and mixed with either sweet or savory ingredients. For dinner it is probably mixed with butter and cheese. Something tells me they may have a breakfast version with milk and sugar? Or I might have made that up .

We finished dinner rather early that night and Mr. Roma was itching for more excitement. I figured since he had been such a trooper letting me indulge in all my Disney wishes that we should do something he would love so we went to Fantasia mini golf (which is supposedly the more difficult course). I played caddy while he putted around the course .
