Is Vanellope A Disney Princess?

I agree with your assessment of Vanellope's title and am also impressed at your "wiki" knowledge. However, for the sake of debate, I do question the methodology of using "European" definitions for a US-based company such as Disney.

ok i'm in :goodvibes

first of all my bad for using "European" which disregards other areas of the world that had and some still have hereditary title ruling families. I should have used the term "old world" definitions of titles.

second my post was concerning Princess Leia and not Vanellope. Vanellope is part of lineage of video game princesses going back to I think Princess Peach and donkey kong but I don't think she had that name at the time. her title was bestowed upon her by a game designer. :thumbsup2

as for using the old world definition of princess for a us based company, what definition should they use? the us has no "princess" tradition here.

to quote wikipedia

Princess is the feminine form of prince (from Latin princeps, meaning principal citizen). Most often, the term has been used for the consort of a prince or for the daughters of a king or sovereign prince.

the first six disney princess are all, even ariel (a danish story with greek mythology), based on european fairy tales.

Ok then by definition "Princess" Sofia is not a princess....

I really don't know her story, just what I'm reading online. So feel free post your take on the issue.

but one thing is it looks like she is not going to be a Disney Princess (TM) all rights reserved. some wondered if she would do m&g's with the other "face" Disney Princesses (TM) at one of the character meals but it would be a tad awkward with her not being a face character.

ETA: Ok found this on imdb.com

Sofia, is a little girl with a commoner's background until her mom marries the King and suddenly she is royalty. With the help of the three fairies in charge of the Royal Training Academy, Sofia learns that looking like a princess isn't all that hard but behaving like one must come from the heart.

not sure how this works in this situation, but hey anything is possible in today's world where england's future queen is a commoner. :scared1: :goodvibes

warning may get a bit geeky. :goodvibes also not a star wars fan boy so feel free to correct me.

standard european definition, a princess is either a daughter of a hereditary king or queen or married to a prince.

Pocahontas is easy she is the daughter of a chief aka king so no issue.

Mulan was supposedly given some proclamation at the end of the movie but any discussion of why she is a princess may move into areas that may violate board rules. ;)

Princess Leia is not the daughter of a king or queen or married to a prince. but what about Amidala queen of Naboo her mother. well thats an elected position. she was adopted by Queen Breha Organa which brings in a ton of other issues but in standard european royalty an adopted family member did not have hereditary rights to a title.

By European definition, Pocahontas is not a princess because she has no rights to a title. Most Native American tribes "voted" on who would be their next chief (and in many of those tribes, the women picked the next chief). For Algonquins, the titled would have moved to the chief's siblings, brothers first then sisters, then through the eldest sister's children. Hereditary rights are matrilineal. Europeans defined chief as king, not the Native Americans.

Pocahontas and Mulan are both Official Disney Princesses, so that's good enough for me! LOL

Princess Leia is not a princess by European definition, but she's not European. Or from this galaxy. If Lucas says she's a princess, then she's a princess! LOL

Let's face it - we're all freaks - in a good way of course :thumbsup2

I dont think that Leia should be a Disney princess because although Disney now owns Star Wars, Disney did not create her so she wouldn't fit in with the others.

Ok being devils advocate here. Did disney create any of the current Disney Princess? Did they not all come from other stories?

Disney Princess is just a marketing term, a very good one at that. :thumbsup2

It may have been out for 7 months THERE, but it just came out last week for us Brits on DVD and has only been in cinemas since Feb. So keep in mind other countries too.
