My DH and I need new glasses and we are going to get them with our Christmas bonus. We were thinking, if the $ stays this strong that we would go to the US for them. Can we use a Canadian prescription there or would we have to get retested down there? Is this even a good idea? Would we save enough money to warrant it? Last time we got glasses his were $400 and mine were over $500.

Don't know but have you looked at the prices at costco?? we just paid $228 for 2 pairs for our 7yo and one of them had transition lenses.

Kids glasses have an unconditional 2 yr guarantee on the whole package and adults have a 2 yr guarantee on the lenses - if they get scratched they will replace with no questions asked!!

I was planning to do this in Dec when I'm due for new glasses even before the dollar reached today's levels. My current pairs are almost 2 years old. I need two pair, one for everyday use and another for computer work. Unfortunately one pair won't work. Imagine my shock when I found out they were not too far off a thousand dollars and that wasn't with designer frames. I just about fell off the stool in the optician's store.

Apparently there are dispensing fees now that weren't added on previously, at least they weren't obvious.

I don't see how it can cost any more to get them in the US and who knows? Maybe I'll get a deal. I'm certainly willing to give it a shot.

I know a few years ago my girlfriend got her prescription glasses down in Buffalo (she wanted specific designer frames and they were WAY cheaper down there; even though the dollar wasn't great back then it was still cheaper to get them in the US) and she had no problems either with getting the prescription glasses made or in submitting the receipt to her insurance company :)

My mom took her prescription with her the last time she was in Florida and she got new specs lickity split no problem! Plans on doing it again. Different selection as well.
