If you arrive at rope drop (I suggest arriving 30-45 minutes before park opening), make use of the first couple of hours to ride without FastPass+ reservations and then use FP+ to ride later in the day, you'll be able to accomplish all of the attractions you'd like at Magic Kingdom.

" Or should I just book my first 3 fast passes in the morning to make sure we get on what we want? " we will be there for rope drop....

I always schedule my Fast Passes for midday/early afternoon. I very rarely bother getting a fourth. You will not need FP for most things during the first hour or two after park open. I see people all the time signing into the FP line at 9:25 for BTMRR when the posted wait is still 5 minutes. It's a waste of an FP. But, if you are wanting to get extra FPs then the earlier in the day you can do that, the better.

It's personal preference, IMO.
We are doing all our FPs in the morning and then trying for more and/or taking an afternoon break. If you are an all day park warrior, I'd lean towards getting FPs for midday or late afternoon.

so if I get there at rope drop.. if i go to seven dwarf and then big mountain and maybe space mountain there shouldn't be much of a wait? save the FP for early afternoon

seven dwarf gets a bad line almost immediately. Big thunder, splash, and space are great at rope drop.

If you are at the front of RD, then yes, you can do 7DMT, SM then BTMR with little to no waits. If you are in the middle of the RD pack 7DMT could be a 45 minute wait by the time you get there.

Yes, 7DMT will fill up first. If you can get in the first bit of the pack you'll be okay. Big Thunder, Splash, and Space will take a while to get long lines and are generally walk-on right at rope drop.

I would hit the other rides first, then do a FP for 7DMT late morning or early afternoon. We try to do Tomorrowland or Adventureland first, then head toward Fantasyland for our FP's later in the morning. It usually works out pretty well.

Personally, I always get fastpasses in the morning-early afternoon in hopes of getting a 4th fastpass somewhere. If I have an early morning fastpass starting at 9:30, I'll always head to the ride toward the end of the time hoping the line has started to fill, and make it more worth it to have that fastpass. At rope drop, I normally go to 7DMT. and after that, I usually have a fastpass for BTMM, Splash Mountain, or Space Mountain. That's usually done by 1. Then, there is a chance that Pirates, Jungle Cruise, and Haunted Mansion are still available to get a fastpass. I enjoy watching shows, so that usually takes up the afternoon/early evening for me. Then I'll ride more rides after the fireworks (if the park is still open) with little wait times.

I would...
- Ropedrop BTMRR, as most others are heading to Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
- Do any other "must do" in Frontier/Adventure
- 10-11am Space Mountain FP (go in the last 15 minutes)
- 11am-12pm 7DMT FP (go in the first 15 minutes)
- Make your third FP for after lunch. If you want to, change it to something earlier as soon as you get off 7DMT so you can book more FPs as you go.

We have a trip coming up in a few weeks. We'll be doing rope drop at MK (on a most recommended day) and heading to Splash and BTMRR at rope drop. Then we'll hit Pirates, Jungle Cruise, and maybe Haunted Mansion, and IASW (depending on time) before our first FP which is scheduled for Space Mountain @ 10:40-11:40 (I plan to use that around 11:00). We have a lunch ADR @ 11:45. Our next FPs are for 7DMT @ 12-1 and Peter Pan from 1-2. We will most likely do a ride standby between 7DMT and PP. After PP (which we plan to do at the beginning of the FP window) we'll schedule our 4th FP for ~7:00 and then just head back to the resort for a swim/nap break for a few hours. We'll come back to MK @ 7:00 and then continue scheduling FP's for whatever is available at that time that we want to ride.

We also followed this plan last June and it worked well. We used 10 FP's (total) and rode 20 attractions in about 10 hours in the park.

If you decide to make early fastpasses and encounter a short standby queue, you can always opt not to use your fastpass and reschedule it for a later time and different attraction as available. I think you can only change it up till the start of your return window so you'd need to keep an eye on things but if you're going to be in the area anyway it might work out.

every time i go including in july 2014 i use the same strategy.
-arrive 30 minutes early
-head to fantasyland at rope drop
-make peter pan's flight my first ride
-schedule my fastpasses for early afternoon

i can always get everything done in fantasyland that i want to do plus haunted mansion all before my 11am lunch.

Strategy holds true. :) Even on busy days you can get a lot done with RD
