IS this a good lens to use on a D90?

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS AF compare to the nikon 18-200mm vr lens? It looks like it is half the price and I have seen some good reviews on it. Has anyone used this lens or sigma lens in general.

I do not own a Nikon or that Sigma, but from what I have heard, the Nikon version is worth the extra funds. In general, I do not like these "do it all" lenses anyway b/c you give up too much in sharpness and aperture range.

It is a fine "do it all lens". Not sure if I'll be keeping it, though. Looking at some faster, sharper glass...
That being said, I have a trip coming up and since I want to go light, I'll be taking that one and a few primes.
I do have to say that the VR really does work!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?? All of you 18-200 lovers looked....er....uh...typed at me cross-eyed a while back when I was thinking about getting two third-party f/2.8 zooms, to replace my 18-200 and now you may be getting rid of it?!

I see how it is---once you get your hands on that 70-200, the shift in the attitude to looking down on non-pro glass takes place



JKing of course and I would be the first to admit that if I got the 70-200, I'd chuck it too. But in all seriousness, I can't believe you're going to get rid of it---it seems like just yesterday you took your trip to WDW and were singing the praises of its convenience!

Hey, hey, hey! I've still got mine. I even used it at my kids soccer game the other day. At f11, it is not bad. But I do looooovvvveeeee my Nikon 2.8 lenses and rarely use my 18-200 anymore. But, I just can't give it up for those few occasions when I want to throw the camera in my purse and travel light.

While we are discussing trading in lenses, OEM lenses generally hold their value much better than 3rd party lenses. If we are considering trading up later it would probably be more cost effective to get the OEM lens, even at a higher initial price.

I have the 18-200 and I like it a lot. You can't beat it for an all in one, walk around lens. I've even shot Fantasmic with it on my D90 and the photos came out pretty good if I do say so myself. The VR is so worth it imo.

No no no, I just fed my need for some new toys this weekend with a new iPHONE to take the place of my iTOUCH/cell phone combo---it'll be one less piece of junk to lug around The World with me.

In all honesty, I'm pretty happy with what I have right now. The 18-200 is convenient, the 30 is good for nice shallow DOF/low light shots, the 50 I still love even though it's probably hardly going on my camera anymore and a macro lens for the occasion that I want to take a picture of a.....bug? flower? I have yet to find out.

I don't have much interest in lugging it around, but around the house and NJ there aren't many opportunities to give it a proper work out.

Can't wait to see some pics when you get yours---and I am completely JKing about giving up the 18-200, if you tossed it once you got the 70-200 I wouldn't blame you at all---but your shoulders/arms/back would

Ann you just hit on the reason I will almost always keep my 18-200. Size and convenience. If I am doing the sunrise safari, I am taking my 70-200. Am I carrying it with be all day around two or three parks? Not unless I have to!

My dad's 80th birthday is next month. What lens am I taking.... the 70-200 because lots of family dressed up. I am also taking umbrella's background, etc. to get portraits. Did you notice the lens that Mark said he used most for his neighborhood photo shoot, the Canon 70-200.

They both have their places. If the 70-200 was the size and weight of the 18-200 then no question.

I did not get frustrated but last weekend at WDW. I used the 50mm 1.2, a 60mm 2.8 and a 10.5 2.8. Why, because I wanted to. Not a pain, but specifically noted how many times I changed lenses. So now I am probably more interested in selecting a second body to use than which lens. I used to use an F2 and FE but the switchout in digital technology is too fast to keep up $$$$ wise.

I bought a backpack before our last trip to the World and carried my 70-200 with me almost all the time. Carrying it in a backpack really wasn't bad at all. Believe me, if I ever get it---I will be someone who swears by a backpack as well! I just happened to go out to the camera store on lunch (just about 30 minutes ago) and took a look-see at the 70-200 and it's definitely a beast. I intentionally didn't bring my body with me so I wasn't able to take test shots (too tempting).

They had one used and they rent lenses, but no insurance and they charge your CC the whole amount of the lens and refund you when you return it safely. No thank you. I think I'll just stick to renting from rentglass.com, borrowlenses.com, etc.

I will say that if I do end up renting it for the trip in December (mostly for use at AK)----it's all downhill from there, I can tell already.
