Is there such a thing as Diabetic Tonga Toast ?

Sprinkled maybe with Cinnamon and Metformin ?

I want to try it, but I think it will spike my blood sugars.

What to do?

As a Type 2 Diabetic, I can say probably no but...I don't think one trip to Kona will kill you!:thumbsup2 I would suggest checking with the chef when you get there to see if there is a possibility of holding the butter or on the side and maybe lo sugar or no sugar syrup if available. It probably would not be near as tasty though.
I had Tonga Toast 'unaltered' on my last trip and it didn't kill me. I would hold the Metformin though, you know what happens if you eat too much fat, you might have an accident!

I should know better than to discuss medical issues on a chat board, but here it goes (there are a number of diabetics in my family, including my mom, and I'm very sugar-sensitive).

What if you eat half of it and accompany it with a good dose of protein (eggs and sausage/bacon will do the trick). You probably will not need the syrup or compote as it is covered in sugar. Treat it as your special treat for this year and adhere to your normal, healthy diet the rest of your trip.

I think I will ask to share some Tonga Toast and The Big Kahuna Breakfast with my partner, and I will try to not eat more than 1/4 of the Tonga Toast and hit up the eggs and meats more.

I normally don't add maple syrup anyway. But I like the idea of asking for no sugar maple syrup if they have it. I have tried the Lite stuff and it is actually delicious.

Thanks

So many reviews have stated that tonga toast is very big. Since they dust with the sugar mixture Maybe ask for light coating maybe even ask for only 1/4-to 1/3 to be coated. I am sure they have sugar free syrup--but fresh fruit sounds so nice to. Being as you are diabetic maybe your dr. can have a dietcian look that meal over and may have a better choice where you still get tonga toast. Have a great time -- let us know how it works.

My DH is type 2 and does not not meds anymore. Controls it with diet and excercise now...I always contact WDW dietary and the chefs are wonderful about making sure his foods are diabetic friendly..of course it is hard for him to do without...I would have the chef leave off the sugar. They do have sugar free syrup..you just have to ask..also another choice at AK is Flametree..you can request no sugar rub..they have to know this ahead of time. There are lots of other stuff. If interested you can PM me. I also have the email address for WDW special diets.

As a dietitian and diabetes educator, if you are really looking forward to this big treat....I would definitely share it perhaps have 1/3 of it if it is really big, no added powdered sugar and just have some eggs without alot of added fat. A high fat, high carb meal will not only bring up blood sugars but the fat will keep the blood sugars elevated for prolonged periods of time.
No high fat breakfast meats with it and no added fruit and no juice!!
I would also recommend doing a nice long walk after breakfast which will help get blood sugars down and make sure you have a lighter, more moderate lunch.

Remember portion sizes are key and lots of walking.
