Is there such a thing as a decent budget hotel/motel?

I have been shopping around and seen quite a few rooms advertized @ around $40 a night. Then I go look at the reviews and am scared away. Are there any clean, safe, good budget places?:confused3

We stayed for one night en route to other adventures, at the Days Inn Suites at Old Town in Kissimmee for a whopping $29 night! Great for a large family but not a resort. Next to a "shady area" with a carnival type set up- it was clean enough and that's it. I would suggest going with a better hotel chain off site that have suites or Disney's cheap resorts. Less room at Disney but safe, clean and magical. Save the $$ with bagels in the hotel for breakfast and packing a cooler for lunch.

I have read pretty decent reviews for the Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista here on the dis.
I stayed the Fairfield Inn Marriott Village in 2005 and I paid about $60 per night. It was VERY clean, great, safe location, just minutes from Disney. Included a deluxe continental breakfast that was much more than we expected. I believe this hotel was in the www.orlandoinfo.com guide book that they send you for free. I believe that the off peak rate is about $50. The rooms have fridge too. I can't say enough about this hotel!!
I also suggest subscribing to www.travelzoo.com as they will email you weekly (every Wednesday) the top 20 travel deals.

We have stayed at the Travelodge Suites Eastgate Orange four times and have found the hotel to be clean, safe and under $50. with a AAA Membership or internet rate. The room sleeps six with a sofa bed and two double beds. The rate includes free high speed internet and a continental breakfast of ceral, toast, muffins, juice, coffe tea etc.

We also stayed at the Golden Link Motel this past December and it was also clean and safe under $50. No free breakfast.

These motels are not the Ritz and are not suppose to be, but they are reasonably priced family motels. Both have fride and micro in the rooms.

If you look around you can find hotels that go for $100-$140 on their websites for $45-$60!!!

You might consider looking at Hotwire or Priceline as well. I've used Hotwire several times and have been really pleased. You can go to Better Bidding dot com and they have a list of all the hotels that Hotwire or Priceline have available based on their star ratings. That way, you can compare the amenities and basically figure out what property you could potentially be bidding on. Each time I have used it, it's been spot on and I've saved considerably.

With their help I got the Hyatt in MCO for only $59/nt. Also in Fort Lauderdale got the Renaissance near the port for only $113/nt. (reg. $300) and the Pelican Grand Beach Resort for $132/nt (reg. $279)
I love Hotwire and you know with a 3.5 or 4 * hotel, it won't be a Motel 6, most likely a Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, etc. Even a Fairfield Inn is ranked 2.5*.
I've never booked a whole vacation this way but it's great when you just need a 1 nt. stay.

The only downside to Hotwire is you don't know for sure what hotel you're getting until after you booked it and unless you buy trip insurance you're not getting refunds for any reason!!!

YES!! I noticed that. What a crappy way to run things. I do not like that at all. I want to be able to have things I am looking for, such as a free shuttle. That is very important since we are flying.

Hotwire actually lists the amenities the property has. So, you'll know whether they have an airport shuttle (not sure about park shuttles though), kitchenette, etc... If you use Betterbidding, you'll also pretty much figure out the property (not guaranteed, but pretty dang close) you are going to get. It's scary if you've never used it, but quite fulfilling once you get your first deal from the site.

How long will you be staying? If it is for a week, or close to it, I'd do Skyauction or rent a condo. You may pay a bit more than $40, but you'd get a much nicer place. For example, here's a place that starts at $55/night:http://www.vrbo.com/105219. Search around and I'm sure you can find more. And we've gone with Skyauction for $40/nite or less 3 times now.

The condos in the Lindfields section of Kissimmee are about 10 minutes from WDW, and go for a lot less than others in the WDW area. Grand Palms, Villas at Island Club both have nice facilities and condos there go from $50 a night. Sometimes you can really get a deal if you can fill in a hole in the owner's calendar. Some owners will haggle with you a bit!

One problem with the bidding sites is that you aren't assured of two beds - sorry we can't all sleep together in one bed - especially a double. LOL.

My biggest need is a shuttle since we will be flying in. We found a great rate on a villa but what w/ the cost of a rental car it would have cost just as much to stay on site.
