I want to change to SW ding fare, but I already booked a nonrefundable airfare with American. Does anybody know of a legal way to get out of nonrefundable airfare?

You can cancel your booking, and get a credit. This usually costs you $100, $50, or whatever 'change fee' is applicable on your original booking. Then you have a year to use your credit.

If American changes the flight time by enough you have the option of asking for a refund. Not sure I'd gamble on booking SW hoping for enough of a schedule change to allow for a refund.
