Is there anyway a 3 yr old could climb overboard with a veranda view?

I know this sounds crazy, but the first thing my husband said when he saw the picture of the verandah is "aren't you going to be worried they are going to climb up on that?" I tried to tell him that disney is used to 3 year olds and probably took that into consideration, and I will be watching them. But do you think this is going to cause me to stress out. I am looking at a category 6 verhanda. I am worried I will be sea sick, so I thought it would be nice to be able to get some fresh air.
Thanks, Heather

It would be VERY hard for your three year old to open the door to get out there...if not impossible...the door has a lock on top ( though we did have one wit ha broken lock) plus it is very heavy. My daughter used to stand on the table to look over, with me holding onto her VERY tightly. If you get a clear one then it would be less need for htem to stand on anything to see over. We had the misfortune to have a solid one that she couldn't see over at all.

You know we worry about the same thing. DS 4 has gotten himself up onto many thing.s When we stay st Saratoga Springs at WDW he does try climbing up on the furniture to look over (we are there to stop and reprimand him). I would never book an open verandah until he is older. A porthole definitely and an enclosed verandah. But I sleep well at night in a room with only one way out and it doesn't look over the sea.

For the record the rooms at SSR have locks that are very difficult for kids to open and hopefully the staerooms have the same. Still not worth the risk IMO.

It is always possible. You can be staring at him every second but that's no vacation. I wouldn't chance it. Get a porthole.

It is very possible. Our last cruise we had a verandah, and I was so paranoid...I do not think I would do it again. IT is just not worth the worry. My ds8 was fine, and I trust him, but my dd5 is another story. We also had connecting cabins, and my niece 2 was my biggest worry. I knew my children were aware of the risks, and my constanst reminders where enough. I still would not leave the room to go to the washroom with them out there. Just thinking about my niece next door. Her mother is much more relaxed than I am.. Don't get me wrong, she is a great mother.

So, all in all...it is obviously your choice. But with the kids being young, it is very very STRESSFUL! :guilty:

We had a 4 & 6 year old and they were only on the verandah when we were. They are both climbers at home, so we had some concern before going. Once we saw what they would have to do in order to 1) get out onto the verandah, lock is about 5 feet off the ground 2). plexiglass covering helps prevent children from climbing up the railings.

With how many thousands of kids that have cruised on DCL, I have not heard of one child going overboard. It is a personal choice, but it would not be a factor in our deciding to have a verandah or not...

Well i have cousins who are 4 and 6 that had a veranda on a princess cruise but of course when my aunt was watching our disney cruise vaction before the princess cruise she said that she would never get a veranda because she would be afriad and that my four year cousin could "jump over" because he is somewhat of a wild type. Of course she went and book a veranda on the princess cruise.. me and my mom where shock :earseek: that she did, but the kids were good and they didn't do anything crazy. Plus they always had us cousins to play with and to watch them.. But that just made so mad that they did that...oh well i guess there are some people that don't see the magic in disney.... :guilty:

The verandah itself was not an issue at all for us. It's the plastic chairs and table that I closely monitored. I was always concerned about this with my daughter at WDW when she was younger so I used to remove the chairs from the verandah just in case . During the cruise I moved the table and chair against the side of sliding door vs. against the rail. It was difficult for me to open the locks let alone our daughter who was 4 at the time. We are going again in Dec with my nephew. Since he'll be 18 months and is starting to climb now I plan to remove the chairs and table not in use if the doors are open even if there is an adult.

Thanks for all of the responses! Maybe there will not be that much a temptation since they will be able to see though it. I think I will be moving all of the chairs inside. They will be 4 when we sail, so hopefully they will not be in climbing mode.

Thanks, Heather

Mine are 3 and & 5 and I had many nightmares prior to us sailing that he would jump overboard. we booked a cat4 stateroom. well I was presently surprised that the door were so hard to open and the only problem would be them wanting to stand on the chairs. when we left we all stood out on our deck and waved at the people on land and we held them while they stood on the chairs- after that nothing.. Gary would play with his toys in the morning on the table out there but that was about it. He never one tried to climb up on his own.

We booked a Cat 8 portal room for this very reason, the boys are 2 & 5 and are climbers. I know we're going to regret not having the Verandah, especially when the kids are sleeping, but we will have a bit more peace of mind. Oh well, there's always next time. FWIW, we also saved about $500 by not having the Verandah.

I second the idea of moving the table and chairs inside. Sit on the floor! My son will climb over anything. I'm getting an inside cabin next time.
