Is there any method to the madness of air fare rates changing so much?

I have watched a decent fare on USAir for about a week, but the times were not so great. Well, I waited too long and now they have gone up $60 per ticket for the same exact flight times. I live in a small town and do not want to drive anywhere to fly out, so I am stuck with US Air or Delta. How long is it usually before they offer another deal? Just wondered if I might get lucky or once they have a good offer like that, do they wait awhile to do it again?

Airfares can change hourly (sometimes by the minute), just keep watching.

It's not always a fare adjustment. The airlines have multiple fares for each flight. When the number of tickets at a particular price are sold out the next highest fare is shown.

Airlines will sometimes add more of the discounted fares and will run sales BUT if you wait too long the flight you want may either sell out or at least no longer have any of the good fares left.
