I know that there are sites online that have a Disney World calendar that shows how crowded each day is. Is there a similar calendar online for Disneyland?

No. But you can use DL parks hours as a guide though. Here is the key:

On weekends, 8AM-11PM or 8AM-12AM = very crowded

On weekdays, 8AM-11PM or 8AM-12AM = crowded

9AM-9PM or 9AM-10PM = moderate crowds

10AM-8PM or 10AM-9PM = light crowds

I think that by looking at the blockout dates for the SOCAL AP you can get a feel for the busy vs not busy weekends. I went a lot last year and it seemed to follow that schedule.

There's this graph:

http://www.scottware.com.au/theme/feature/atend.htm

But this is very old and it's not too accurate anymore. So take this with a BIG grain of salt. For example, October was crazy for us this year and Early February was dead, which is not what this graph seems to indicate.

IMO, the best gauge is to do a lot of reasearch and check if any major school districts within an 8 hour drive have time off during the time you want to go. If so, beware of crowds.

October (and overall the whole year) has gotten much more crowded in recent years past. I also agree with Hydroguy's post.

Here's what I would say:
Lowest crowd: January (except first week and MLK weekend), early February, First 2 weeks of December

Low crowds: Last week of February, November (except T-Giving and Veteran's Day)

Medium crowds: First 3 weeks of May, All of September, All of October, Thanksgiving

High crowds: Any weekend, President's Week, March and April (except Spring Break), Late May to Late June, Late August, 3rd week of December

Very high crowds: Any holiday weekend (other than Labor Day), 2/3 weeks surrounding Easter (also known as Spring Break), July to late August, Week after NY

Most Crowded: Week between Christmas and New Years.
