I used to do them myself, but after my DH retired and we were dealing with his IRA and such it became too confusing..

Well last year - due to medial expenses - we had to wipe out the last of his IRA/pension and because it was only one final distribution I'm thinking I might be able to do the taxes myself and save us a few bucks now that I lost my job..

Is there someplace I can do this on-line - or do I have to go out and track down the actual tax forms?

Thanks!

Hey, C. Ann... don't despair.

On the IRS website, there is something for free efile for Qualifying Taxpayers (or something like that)

Click on that, to see if you qualify, then go from there.

I know if you do your taxes through the Turbo Tax program you can get a rebate for the online filing fee...but you have to pay for the program. Sorry that's the only way I know of, good luck!

I used a free on-line service called:
FreeTaxUSA.com
I filed on-line January 30 and got my refund (automatic deposit) yesterday!:D
You'll have to go there and see if you qualify to have it done for free or not.

TC:cool:

C. Ann - We did my moms from the IRS web site for the free filing. It was really easy and fast. She got her refund directly deposited in 1 1/2 weeks. If your state allows (and the site will tell you if it does) you can also file your state for a small fee.

Hope this helps ya!

You can do your taxes for free at taxactonline.com. You can print out your return and mail it in or for $7.95 you can efile. I did mine yesterday and will have my refund direct deposited 2/27.

Go to IRS.gov and check the list there. There are lots of different reasons for you to file on-line for free. Last year I got to file for free because I was over 50. This year I will get to file for free because I live in LA. Check over the list. Hopefully, you will be lucky.

Just make sure you check to see if you need a code or something. It should tell you. Then, after you fill everything out, when it asks you how you want to pay, you enter the code.

Thanks everyone! I sure didn't want to have to shell out $83 right now!

Now this is perfectly legit, right? And will I get some kind of confirmation number so I can prove I filed?

Thanks again!

I used TaxBrain last year (that was the company that gave 50 yr olds and older the free filing).

There will be several companies and you may even be able to use more than one. You will get a confirmation when your return is accepted by the IRS. Then you just have to mail in a form (they will tell you how to get it) to finalize the whole thing.
