Someone from Winnipeg just asked me to help them plan their trip to Disney and I was looking at flight prices, Is there a USA Airport near Winnipeg or not?
Thanks for any help you can give I guess I am spoiled with Buffalo.. seeing $396 per person seems so high when we can book under $115 on SWA!

Fargo, ND would be the closest .. but still almost a four hour drive.

Neither JetBlue nor SW fly to Fargo.

NWA, Allegiant, United Express and Delta Connection do.

Man, it is expensive to fly from there.. almost would be cheaper to fly here and visit with her family then drive to buffalo!
(that would save $600 according to what I just priced)
How do you guys do it?! I think we are spoiled with SWA

Grand Forks also has an airport. I believe Northwest offers regional service. Otherwise, I think Minneapolis is the closest largest US center.

My sister live in Winnipeg and when we went to Disneyworld last week they ended up flying Air Canada because they had a seat sale. She's also flown NWA and switched planes in Minn.

You wait for seat sales, or use consolidator airfare, at least for WDW. For DL I'd go with Westjet.

She wants to go at the end of July 07, what is the historical pricing for that time of year?
Thanks!

Uhm, high. That's about as close as I can say. It is a market that's serviced by a limited number of flights (as you've already seen) and they know that's a peak travel period so they charge whatever they can get away with.

Feel free to PM me if you think I can give you anymore information.

Yeah... I'm in the same boat with having to fly out of Winnipeg. I've booked a package for 03/10 - 10/10 at CSR but haven't booked a flight yet. Just praying the price will drop below $600. My travel agent is on the lookout for good deals so maybe something will turn up :confused3

Minneapolis airport is the closest U.S. "hub" airport. If they are going in July they may consider driving to Minneapolis and flying out, as that will shave a LOT off the fare. I know it seems to be a haul, but its doable. If they go the day before the flight, a number of hotels have a park'n'fly special where you stay one night, they shuttle you to the airport, and you can park your car at the hotel until your return at no extra cost (we plan to do this in the summer ourselves for a trip to Colorado:teeth: )

Going in July - that's the one time of year where Winnipeg can be HOTTER than Orlando!

The best advice I can offer is driving to Minneapolis as well! We've done it most of the time, and it is only a 7 1/2 hour drive. Flying out of Grand Forks or Fargo is just as costly if not more than flying out of Winnipeg. NWA has had some good seat sales out of Wpg lately. We got ours for $378 including taxes, etc which is the best I've ever seen out of Winnipeg. I noticed they have changed our planes to and from the MSP portion to bigger aircraft as well (they usually only fly regional jets to MSP). She can generally get a flight out of MSP for around $200-$250 a person.

We have had no problem ever getting good ticket sales departing from Winnipeg. We purchased out 3 tickets for April from NWA and I believe it was about US$450 a person, including taxes and fees, roundtrip. That really isn't such a bad price.

In the past we have also flown United. Also similar good deals.

Granted, there are usually stopovers involved (usually Denver, Minneapolis, or CHicago) but from my experience they have never been more than an hour or too, unless there is a major unforseen delay.

I've gone all over the states (LA, Las Vegas) departing from Winnipeg and never found the flights to be at too horrendous of times or prices. You just gotta look around and find the good deals. Check the airlines websites. THere are good deals just wait for you!

I personally think that with the time constraints, cost of gas, etc. it is not worth it to travel to a different airport. While Grandforks does has an airport, it is not a big one, and fargo and Minneapolis are just a bit too far away. When I go to WDW, I just want to get there NOW, not drive for hours then sit in an unfamiliar airport. That's just my opinion though. :)

Thanks so much, I will pass on that info and watch for seat sales they have 3 young children so I am not sure they will want to drive 7.5 hours to go to the airport BUT OTOH they will want to save some money because the per person difference will add up with 5 of them.

According to Mapquest driving is 31.5 hours, so anything is better than that!

We have only used Aeroplan rewards to fly so far - Actually flew United exclusively via star Alliance . CRJ to Chicago - 50 minute layover each way.

Could not ask for better connections.

For the fun of it :

Just priced out our trip for Dec via a few carriers ( for 2 A & 1 6yro)

Westjet 2366 cad
United 2160 usd
NWA 1340 cad ( only $266 more expensive than from Minneapolis- Not worth the drive for that- IMO)

Air Canada 2400

Driving the whole way- 2 days each way (guestimate) $ 800 gas - hotel 1 night each way $200, meals snacks etc $250.

Travel agent said WestJet has been talking about direct flights to Orlando for some time now....let's email WestJet and ask about it! :cheer2: Maybe that'll help push them ahead and show them how badly it's needed out here in Winterpeg! (Sucks having to board early am and not arrive until evening when we should get there early afternoon if we went direct!) More mouse time! ::MinnieMo

NorthWest Leave 6:20 arrive 12 noon , 7:30am Arrive 1:00 pm- only 1 hr layover in MSP - not bad

Likely if westjet did so it it would be like charter service- couple times a week during winter season - I just can't imagine there would be enough traffic yr round to warrant service during the summer.
