Is there a sign up for the new hidden/private forum or are we just in the waiting game at the moment?

I agree. But what I do see is that we'll have like 95% rational people posting and then there will be one or two that come in to say something really off-the-wall or SOOO dogmatic that, tbh, it borders on trolling, but then part of the 95% normal crowd loses their sanity over that one person and it then becomes "entertaining." All of us normal people need to learn how to move past that. It's hard though.
It's almost always the same handful of posters too. They're the reason why the ignore feature exists. People really do need to stop giving them attention but I digress.

The only part of this I don't 100% agree with is the last sentence. Why is it hard to just ignore a post you don't like? None of us owe it to the world to tell it what we know and we're not obligated to set everything and everybody straight. Upthread, @Beezle2 mentioned "infantilizing", and to me, that's what having all these ways built-in to not have to even see something is. Trigger warnings, opt-ins and ignore features to keep everybody in their happy-places. I just don't get it.

Okay maybe I should qualify that. It can be hard sometimes. The only ones I struggle with are the types of posts that @Beezle2 is referring to: not a disagreement of a position, but when someone is so clearly wrong--to the point that it's trolling--it's very hard for me not to say something in reponse to that . For simplicity's sake, we'll use the "The sky is blue" fact. (Put aside that we all know that sometimes the sky is not blue, lol).

So we have a post that "The sky is Blue" and everyone is like "yep, yep, the sky is blue." Then you get that one person who comes in and says:

"Well you think the sky is blue, but it's not really--that's just what they want you to think. It's really orange. Oh I know, I know, you can look out your window and see this mirage of blue, I can too, but my research and sources know better and the sky is really orange." I guess that's a conspiracy? Hard to ignore for me but I'm trying.

Isn’t that the point of this move by the DIS in the first place - to attempt to box in the trolls in one place, keeping them from free-ranging wacko all over the place, save the “normies” from leaving, while protecting the reputation of the DIS and reaping the benefit of the clicks in either case? I haven’t seen any of the so-called controversial threads with anything new, original or high up on the critical thinking meter - where I have said to myself - wow - the DIS is the place to go to discuss religion and politics …

I'm not sure what the point of the move is. I thought it was to allow some flexibility back into the boards that had been gone for a long time. I can only refer back to the Debate Board from decades ago and the DIS was a very different place back then and it was a place for fairly good debates. This was well before most of the other social media came so there weren't a lot of outlets for things as there are now.

I also remember the Debate Board and there were some good conversations there.

Technically the sky only appears to be blue during the day because blue light scatters more than other colors in the Earth’s Atmosphere. 😉

You haven't been sent an invite yet?

Umm, those of us who've gotten in are not supposed to tell others as this forum is private. It's by invitation only. :ssst: :rolleyes1

It's just like on youtube when the person doing the video is obviously shooting an overloaded (illegal) firework. Everyone asks where to get it, but they can't answer.
By the way our stimulating conversation on politics today, you hit the nail with a sledge hammer. Congratulations for 248 likes. I think that's a record.

Then by all means, please feel free not to engage with them. But don't report them and hope to get them banned for having different ideas than you do.
OOOOOOO. That's some mighty fine angling. Air mail that fish into the boat and I'll take it off the hook for ya.

Nobody is reporting anyone for merely having differing ideas than they do. Nobody. And even if they are, if no violation occurred, no punishment is given. So why should you care? Admonishing that poster not to do it when you have not one shred of evidence that they or anyone else actually has is fallacious at best.

You weren’t around when the Debate Board was here. There were “wackos” a plenty on there and I’ll guarantee wackos will appear again on this new forum. Even people you didn’t think were wackos!!!
I would think known "wackos" would not be allowed an invitation but that's just my opinion.

No kidding. One woman was so bad that I still remember what her family & she looked like & most people make fun of me for my lack of observance. I noticed she disappeared, when she could no longer spew her vitriol.
