Is the food at Cantina De San Angel better than the Inn?

The food quality at the San Angel Inn has dropped off considerably over the past 10 years. We are Mexican food lovers and we are looking for a convenient (to the parks) Mexican food restaurant that is good.

We used to like Chevy's near Downtown Disney, but the last time we went there it was terrible - tasted nothing like Mexican food, when we used to really like their food.

We didn't finish our entrees and when the waitress asked how things were, we told her they weren't very good. Ended up talking to the manager, and he said they'd changed their ingredients and sauces recently (to make them more americanized, I guess), and that people had complained.

He ended up comping us for the entire meal - we didn't ask for it, and would have just paid for it, even though we both ate less than 1/2 our meals, and we didn't want a doggy bag.

We did leave a full tip for our waitress, based on what the meal would have cost, though, as she did a good job, we just didn't like the food.

So, stay away from Chevy's, i guess is the point of my post.

I'd also be interested to see if anyone can recommend a good Mexican food place, as we also love Mexican (good mexican), and would love to have it on vacation - we were so disappointed that Chevy's had changed (we always went there a couple of times on vacation).

Thank!

The cantina is more Taco Bellish. Tacos, nachos, taco salad, fajitas, that sort of fare, that being said we LOVE this place!! It is cheap eats considering you are in the park. The portions are large enough to split and the food is quite good! I recommend the combination platter with a chicken fajita, beef burrito and quesadilla along with salsa and black beans. Or the cantina nachos which seems to have everything on them! Paired with a 'rita or XX it is fantastic!! We have a tradition of starting every vacation with lunch there on our first day. Enjoy!!

San Angel Inn is amazing.. must go to this one.. great authentic mexican food and inside is absolutely beautiful.. boat ride.. mexican shops..and a midnight blue mountain that makes the resturant look like ur eating outside but really ur inside.. one of my favorite places.. go to cantina for frozen magaritas after or the one after that for strawberry or rasberry ones...yumm...

I've had "authentic" (made by people from Mexico) food and it varies a lot! Plus, I'm no food critic. Seems fine to me.

IMHO, the food at San Angel is good, and so is the Cantina. The Cantina just has a more fast-food type menu. :)

Here's a link (I don't know how to do it the cool way, but this works) to the menus.

IMO this is just what some do not get. Mexican food varies greatly in Mexico, it is a very regional and economic thing.

Having traveled through Mexico(with my Mexican grandparents) heavily when I was a teen, and I only ate at San Angel INN once. I would say that the food at San Angel INN can be considered authentic and is styled after food from Mexico City, If you have mexican food from other regions you may think it is not.

I actually like San Angel myself. I would say its not quite as Americanized as the mexican restaurants here at home. I ate in Cozumel Mexico once and it was horrible! We also like the Cantina for a quicker meal..
My family seeems to be different tho :confused3 we always like the places alot of others dont..

Is the Cantina on the Dining Plan? We didn't like San Angel Inn (except for the atmosphere - love it!), so we're avoiding that, but usually like Mexican food, so maybe Cantina would be an option.

There has always been a lot of discussion as to the fact that a lot of people don't like San Angels because it's true Mexican and not Tex-Mex. We use to visit a friend who lived in Mexico City, and she took us to several true authentic Mexican restaurants that were excellent. It's all about fresh ingredients, and quality of the meats in the dishes. San Angels doesn't cut it. It use to. It use to be great. No longer. If there are any Dallas Texanites on this board, what is your favorite Mexican Restaurant in the metroplex. Ours is Uncle Julio's.
