I don't think it is totally unrealistic, but I think many parents go about it the wrong way. They think that if they just say "because I said so" or "because it is a sin" or what ever that the kids won't have sex.
I try to be very open and honest with DS who is 15. At least for now the fear of disease or unplanned pregnancy seems to take precedence over "hormones". I also tell him that while condoms are not 100% they do provide a lot of protection from both. I also tell him that he can and should come talk to us, either if tempted or if he gives into the temptation.
