is it safe enough in nassau as long as you are booked on a tour even?

So with all of the safety warnings and awful reviews of nassau and how dirty and unsafe and dangerous if you are just walking around, it's got me worried to get off the ship with our 2 young girls! We love sea days but also love to get off and enjoy adventures in a new place! I hate to not get off at all, feels like a waste of money/time to just stay on board. We booked thru DCL the Seaworld Explorer Semi-sub tour, will we be safe enough to do the tour then get back on board?

Im planning on leaving the ship as I've never been there so I would like to explore. DH and I hired a private taxi/tour service that we researched over and over and over to make sure they were reputable and will go that route. Next time we go thru nassau I may not be so inclined to leave the ship but I say do it at least once.

I'm planning on just walking around on my own. From what I've read online it doesn't sound that bad. If you've ever lived in a big city or visited one, the same "be safe" rules apply.

Don't flash your money around (that includes stuff you wear), know your surroundings at all times, and trust your gut instincts.

You will be perfectly safe on an excursion booked through DCL. We have been to Nassau several times on DCL and felt safe walking around on our own as long as you are aware of your surroundings. We even walked to the Pirate Museum there and felt perfectly safe. Enjoy your cruise!

The pirate museum is a very short walk. It's not like you visited the "Over the Hill" section of Nassau. My experience is the downtown area of Nassau is very safe. However, based on the tone of the OP's question, my advice is to stay on the ship. Why take any chance.

By all means get off the ship and enjoy yourself. You'll be fine as long as, walking by yourselves, you keep to the tourist areas and don't venture beyond it. We've been to Nassau many times over the years and have had no problems at all. Lots shops on Bay Street as well as the Straw Market. Have fun.

Impressions on other peoples impressions. I live in So Cal and I'm close to Tiajuana where the street sellers are very aggressive. Its never been a big deal to me and if you just ignore it, or smile and not look interested and keep walking its usually not a problem. Watching other people who have never been exposed to TJ or similar environments they were flabbergasted at the behavior and thought it was anarchy.

We were just there and as I have said before.... I feel safer walking around Nassau than Baltimore city any day!!!!!

We were just there in February- the people there survive on tourism and they ensure the safety of tourists. I've never been nervous except for the driving abilities of the taxi drivers :lmao:

We walked around the straw market and to the pirate museum. The people there (Nassau) are REALLY friendly.

Absolutely safe IMO. You and several 1000 of your closest friends are getting off the ship. Lots of shopping within a couple blocks that is all tourists. Would I walk around at night with young kids (in any city that I was not familiar with) no. Daytime not an issue.

Have spent a lot of time in Nassau on fishing trips. The tourist areas are basically like an Epcot Bahamas. Not really authentic, but totally safe. They even put nets on the beaches so you don't have to worry about sharks or jellyfish (in theory, my mom got the worst lash of her life at the Atlantis). If you're worried, just don't go over the bridge.

I'm also very interested in this thread. I am due on my first cruise next month and I will also be visiting nassau.

Initially we where just going to go to the beach but I would like to have a look around. where exactly are the tourist areas and how do I get to the Queens staircase.

Thanks.

Random question what was the weather like when you were there in February? And did it seem very crowded?

And as far as safety goes, it is highly unlikely that you will be in any danger at all but again the locals do thrive off of tourism, so that means they will aggressively (IMO) try to sell you items or carriage rides or taxis rides around the city. And in my experience we had to tell many of the same people several times no thank you and at that point it does get a bit annoying. But you should be fine DCL keeps everyone together and it is a pretty smooth process from the port adventure meeting point to the actual port adventure.

On a couple of days it was really breezy and mild, maybe low to mid 70s? And a couple of other days it was perfect, maybe upper 70s to low 80s. It's not one of their more warmer times but still nice. It didn't seem very crowded at all. We never had to wait for anything (food, water slides etc.).
