Is it possible to rent a car in Canada and drop it off in the US?

Just came back to say thanks for the help. We found flights for a good price from Buffalo ($109 pp, Southwest from Buffalo). Just waiting for a good return price. Husband decided that he does not want to drive home!

My DH would totally agree there! He hates it! Of course, we used to do it 3-4 times a year so I guess it's a sore point now.

I believe I've read it's ok to take a Canadian plated car into the US as a Canadian resident but it's illegal to take a US plated car into Canada as a Canadian. So driving down would be ok, driving back would be a problem unless the rental company could guarantee you that they would be renting you a car with Canadian plates.
