We have an existing Alamo rental reservation for an SUV in August, and I just saw a very low rate for a Full Size. Is it OK to make two reservations and decide later which one we will keep, as long as I cancel one before the trip?
I can't tell you how many reservations I've made and canceled in the search for the best rate. Just be sure to cancel all but one when your departure date nears.
I do this all the time with Alamo. I keep checking back for better rates. When I get a cheaper one I cancel the old one. Last year I was trying to get the best deal for a car during our stay. I had reservations made for different date combinations & different pickup times at the locations on property while I was trying to figure out when exactly we needed the car for & which place it would be easiest to pick the car up at.

Yes. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CANCEL THE RIGHT ONE!!!!! Not mentioning any names, but some silly person in this thread not too long ago cancelled her ultra-low rate Alamo rental instead of cancelling the expensive one. It all worked out in the end, but she still owes a pizza to the Alamo manager in Las Vegas....
You mean fail to cancel the extra one? That happened to me with National once. Over time I had about 4-5 different ressies, as the price kept dropping. I canceled all but 2, one slipped through the cracks. The check-in agent brought it to my attention, but I didn't have any trouble using the least expensive one. Most places don't ask for a CC anymore to make a ressie, so there's nothing for them to charge if you're a no-show. (Of course, it's not nice to be a no-show.)
I think that if you have duplicate ressies, some places say they have the right to cancel them all, so, I don't know if this helps, but I usually vary my pick-up time by a little. I'll also put one in full name, and a second in first initial. Even use a different e-mail address. (maybe that's how the second ressie escaped my attention ). I try to cancel unneeded ressies ASAP, so inventory is freed up for others to reserve, but I never cancel what I have until I have a confirmed ressie at the new rate.
I also believe this is why you see rates drop randomly.. I think when plp cancel one, it gives that one back to the rate pool... so many at so many discounts... we are probably hurting each other by having too many ressies out
