Our cat had a major surgery last week. All told, he was at 3 different vets and 1 surgical center in the 2 weeks before the surgery. His surgical recovery has been wonderful, but he has been having a gastro issue for the past 2 days. I thought that the antibiotics were causing it, so the surgeon told us to stop giving him those (since he was already a week out of surgery at that point it was OK).

Well, he's still having the diarrhea 2 days after his last antibiotic. DH thinks that maybe he got worms from one of the vet's offices that he was at. Is that possible or likely? Is it more likely that the antibiotics just need more time to get out of his system? The surgeon thinks that it can't be the antibiotics after 2 days of being off them, but I'm not so sure. He took the cat version of Amoxicillin (sp?), and I know that the human version of this drug can do a number on the gastro track too. I don't want to drag him to our vet before the surgeon takes his sutures out on the 7th if I can help it, but I will if there is any chance that he does have worms.

are you seeing any evidence of worms in his bedding or around the house. One of our cats sleeps on a chair and when he had worms there were 'rice' like bits all over the the chair. It was pretty obvious.

I think it's possible to pick stuff like that up at the vet, I know it is common is shelters so I'd imagine that it is possible in vet offices.

No, I haven't seen anything that looks like rice or worms anywhere that he's been. I feel so bad for him. He seems to be very uncomfortable from the problem, whatever it is. If it is the antibiotics, does anybody know how long this will take before it runs it's course for him?

Worms can be passed on through fleas. The cat has to have ingested something containing the worm/larva. It might simply be a reaction to the antibiotics....I have exactly the same thing when I have antibiotics (that type too)...so I have some major sympathy for your cat right now! However it did clear up pretty soon after I stopped. Diarrhea in cats is not a good thing, it can be very debilitating and really does require veterinary attention if it lasts more than 24 hours. Try to keep him as hydrated as possible. I really would consider contacting the vet.

We're keeping him very well hydrated, and we have called the surgeon twice already...at first, she did think that it was the antibiotics. Now she doesn't anymore, but I'm not sure how she could tell. I wanted to bring him in, but she wants us to take him to our regular vet. I really hate to do that while he still has all the surgical sutures in. I definitely will, though, if he needs to be seen. Poor guy...he has not had a very good 2 weeks :guilty:

:scared::eek::crazy2:OMG!!! Is there anyone I could hire, to clean/remove a chair if that happens with our 2 new cats? OMG!!! I hope this Revolution stuff really keeps away fleas, worms, etc...the vet told me it would but, I'm still not believing it.:rotfl2:I hope it works, I hope it works.

Hey! Why are there several doggie smilies but, I can't find a cat one???
