Is it harder to clean a big house or a small one?

We are going from 1640sq feet to 3441 sq feet.

I'm now worried about keeping it clean!

In a way, it might be easier cuz there are more places to put things away, but so much dusting and vacuuming!

Any insight?

What a dramatic difference in your house size! I would think that if you can keep it less cluttered (like spreading out your stuff with all that new space), it would be easier to keep clean!

I have 3450 sq. feet.

It's never clean. The place should have come with a maid. I used to have 2500 square feet, and I was convinced that once we had more space that I would have a place to put everything.

Yeah, there's a place for everything...all that furniture that we don't have because we're paying for a 3450 square foot house!

I'm not complaining. I really just do my best to keep the main floor clean and make my bed. The upstairs is left to the devices of my 3 kids.

We've actually found it to be easier. We went from 900 sq feet to 2800 sq feet. For one, we have less piled up because we have room to put things away. Also, since there is only 2 of us plus 2 dogs, we don't use the upstairs hardly at all. So we rarely have to clean that part of the house. I also think that because we own this house instead of rent like in the past, we take more pride in it's condition and stay on top of things. I'm not sure that applies to your situation, though.

Cleaning in the past was a pain because we just didn't have space to put things - now everything has a place and we tossed or donated anything we couldn't store for a good reason or use immediately. We have lots of empty space still for room to grow.

Now, when we add children to the upstairs I know we'll have more to clean! =)

I thought the same thing when we moved from a 1780 sq foot to a 3461 sq ft. but for me it was much much harder in the bigger house. You will probably find that you will fill in all that extra space with new stuff. And new stuff will have to be cleaned. We recently moved from the 3461 sq. ft. to a 2800 sq. ft. and so far it seems much more managable. But it could just be the layout of the bigger house that made it more difficult. I hated my kitchen, the laundry was located right as you came in the door from the garage, there was an extra bathroom, the master bedroom closet was small although there was great closet space everywhere else. Good luck with your new home!!

Congrats on your new home!

Just don't fill up all the new space with stuff, and you should be fine!!!

I can't stand the clutter that is in my house - it's just DD and I, plus 5 pets, but I just can't keep up with it some weeks. I work from home so I am in it all day long, but most times I am too busy to stop and clean. School papers, work papers, etc Doesn't help that we have been spending part of every weekend at Disney since the beginning of the year

I find the thing that causes me the most trouble is the laundry... which has nothing to do with the size of the house, but seems to be consuming my house slowly but surely! I need a laundry person!

It's harder to clean a big house because there are more places to clean, but it's harder to keep a smaller house uncluttered because there are not enough places to put things.

Reminds me of when we lived in our last house. It was a split level 3BR house with a teeny kitchen with very little counter space. A friend of mine was over and I had papers piled high and she looked at them and said, "your house is messy because you have no where to put things". My reply was, "then what's your excuse?". It shut her up! :rotfl: She was right to a certain degree, but who the heck says that to someone unless they are asked for their opinion.

We then moved into a much bigger house--not sure how big since I'm terrible with sf, but I'd guess 4500sf including the basement that we had finished. We went from the small 3BR, 2 1/2 bathroom with a small kitchen to a 3 level house, study, large kitchen, 3 living areas, large basement playroom (can be 5th bedroom), etc and we've filled it up and sometimes I wish that rooms were bigger.

We went from 1900 to 4000 2 years ago. At first it seemed like it took longer, but now I don't really mind it at all.

we went from a big old home 3000 sq to a smaller 1950 sq townhome. Our smaller home is so much easier to clean.

Bigger House = Bigger Mess

You didn't mention if there are kids in the mix.

That formula is...

Many kids + Bigger House = Huge, unmanageable, shut the doors to their bedrooms Mess. ;)

I think it will be easier, although I won't know for sure until July/August. We currently live in a 500 sqft condo (dear so and myself), we just purchased a townhouse that is 1400sqft. We feel with all the added space that we will have a place to put everything and since we will have our own walk in closets, we can stay more organized, thus having a cleaner home.

Thanks guys....not sure if I'm reassured or more scared!

There are the same number of bathroom, so that should help.

We recently moved to a house that is 1000 sq. ft. bigger than our last house. For some reason this house seems so much easier to clean than the last one. I think it has something to do with the floorplan but every time I clean I still find myself trying to figure out why. :confused3

I went from 1400 sf to 3000 sf and it is much harder to keep clean. Sure there is less clutter but just dusting is impossible to keep up with. I manage to keep it straightened and vacuumed but it is definitely NEVER clean. As soon as my son graduates from high school I am putting it on the market and DOWNSIZING.
