Is it common to feel cold before your TOM?

DD (15) has messed up hormones and has had issues since she was 10. She has been to numerous doctors. She has endometriosis and ovarian cysts. Her newest thing, though, has me puzzled.

For the past four months or so, about three days before she starts, she is so cold. It is in the mid 80's here and incredibly humid. DS and I have been hot all day. DD is sitting at her computer doing schoolwork with the ceiling fan off and a sweatshirt and jeans on. When this started a few months ago, I thought she was just getting sick. A few days later, she started and was right back to normal. After happening a few months in a row, I now see the pattern. I never had this issue. Is it normal?

She did have her thyroid checked about 9 months ago during a routine physical and it was fine. I do take thyroid medication and so does her grandma and aunt so that is why it was checked. The only thing off in her blood work was a low iron level (not terribly low but enough to take a daily supplement). If she was always cold, I would think it was something related to her iron but since it is only before she starts, it seems odd to me. I would understand hot flashes but I have never heard of cold flashes.

Of course, I will get her in for a recheck of her blood work but I will probably wait until winter break. I am just curious if anyone else gets cold before they start.

I amgoing to venture in here and say that over the last year and a half I have been getting cold like symptoms before TOM. I don't feel cold like your daughter but its just like a head cold and its nto every month, anyway when I went to the dr. she asked if I was regualrly taking my allergy medications, which of course I wasnt. She told me to be good this next couple months and sure enough I didnt get anything. So apparently something in my allergies triggers me to get a head cold like thing and I'm talking yellow mucus and all, and as soon as TOM is gone or half way its gone. weird. so i would maybe say check allergies as well???? This jsut started like I said early last year.

I have very low iron as well and always seem to be cold before my TOM.

I'm not sure if this is normal/healthy, but your DD isn't alone!

From a charting perspective, basal body temp increases by about a half degree (or a smidge more)'once ovulation has occurred due to increase in progesterone. When there is no baby and just before a new cycle, that hormone drops and often you will get a temp Plunge a day or 2'before TOM. But how that applies to your dd, I have no idea. But I'm
Not sure feeling cold is a sign unless she just
Went from feeling too warm prior to that.

But there can be a temp drop just before. You wouldn't think a half degree would make much difference,'but it does for me.

But to sort of answer the question....there is a temP change associated with ovulation and TOM and that could explain it.It does seem a bit extreme though.

::yes:: I was freezing this morning. And - what do you know - I started this afternoon. :goodvibes

It does feel like the same kind of chills you get when you're getting sick. My hands, feet, and even my nose will feel cold to me.

I also sometimes talk in my sleep the night before, which always amuses the heck out of my husband. ;)

Thanks! I am glad to see my DD isn't the only one. It is really hard since our cycles are about the same and I want to pour ice water over my head right now and she wants me to turn the heat on!

Absolutely this! I had severe anemia and feeling cold is part of it. My hands and feet were like popsicles! It can be related to thyroid as well, but from my experience, the thyroid issues were brought on by the anemia. . .once that was under control, all the other symptoms disappeared. It's ongoing though. . .just got off my cycle and have been freezing the whole time, even though our weather has just actually warmed up a bit. I need to go get some iron pills, I'm out. :(
