Hi, I've very new to this forum, so please forgive me if I'm asking a frequent question. I'm having trouble finding an answer through the forum search.
I'm just trying to figure out how sale of points works.
Would I be better off buying points or requesting a reservation for rent??
Just trying to figure how the whole system works.
Thanks so much!

Are you rich? If so buy points with no knowledge of what you are doing. If you are like most of us, I suggest that you rent first.

Take the time to read other posts. You will be glad you did.

If you are not a DVC member you would need to request a reservation. A DVC owner would use his/her points to make a reservation in your name.

If you are a DVC member you can either rent a reservation or you can request a points transfer from another member. With a points transfer, one DVC member transfers some of his/her points into another DVC member's account. The receiving DVC member can then use those points to make a reservation.

There are several "sticky" threads at the top of the Rent/Trade board that explain this in more detail and explain the rules you need to follow if you want to post on the Rent/Trade board.

Now that I see Disneynutz's reply, I'm wondering whether I misunderstood something. OP: are you just looking to stay at a DVC resort by renting a reservation from a DVC member or are you considering becoming a DVC member? You asked about the "sale" of points and I just assumed you were confused and were really asking about "renting" points which is how people often refer to renting a reservation. So did you really want to know about purchasing a DVC membership or are you just looking to rent a reservation?

I'm looking to "rent" a reservation. I am not a DVC member, so I was looking to see how to go about renting a reservation.
Seeing the threads for "points for sale" were confusing me. From seeing that I was thinking you have to buy points first and then find someone to make the reservation for me.
Just want to know how to rent...

Read the info at the top "sticky" on the Rent/Trade board. That should help.

We talk about "renting points" - but in truth you rent a reservation. They are the same thing. Points themselves are useless to a non-member - the member you rent from needs to make the reservation for you, and will handle all aspects of the reservation, including making Magical Express arrangements and arranging for the DDP if you need it. You need to understand that the reservation is always under the member's control and you are making a private arrangement with a private individual. Make sure you understand what you are getting especialy what flexibility you have regarding cancellations or changes.
