Hello! I'm 21, and I've never traveled alone before. Normally, I wouldn't even be asking this question, since most of the cruises leave from PC or Miami, but do you guys think it would be safe for me to fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico and get to the port from the airport? I've heard that Puerto Rico can be really dangerous from my friends who've lived and visited the island, so I'm a bit wary.

Miami can be just as dangerous, I never felt in danger when we were there last year, do want you would in any big city and you would be fine

I really don't see how it's any more dangerous than flying into MCO or MIA and going straight to the port after getting off a plane????

Oh, yeah I forgot to specify, I'd be afraid of flying to MCO or MIA by myself, too! If it left from PC or Miami I'd be getting a ride straight to the port from a friend or family member - I'm a Florida resident.

All you have to do is walk out of the airport and catch a taxi to the port...I have never heard of the airport being dangerous, and they have a designated taxi line so stick to that. What time are you thinking of landing?

DCL might also offer transfers from airport to port, in which case you would probably ride on a bus with other cruisers. You might find that preferable. There should be some assistance in the airport to locate the pick up area.

I fly into and out of airports alone all the time because I usually don't travel with anybody, I meet them at the destination. I don't recall hearing much of anything about crime in airports, outside of pickpocketing, luggage theft and the like. I did have a piece of luggage stolen once but you can prevent that by keeping an eye on your stuff.

Set up your transfer with whatever is the suggested provider in the area. Many people where can give you suggestions. I spent two vacations in Puerto Rico now and never felt unsafe. The cruise ports are in a very safe area of town and the airport is safe as well. I only suggest setting up your ride from a suggested provider simply so you have peace of mind.

My company uses Puerto Rico as home base for people who travel all through the Caribbean and central america. One of my best friends (single female, 20s) lived there for 5 years, traveled in and out of that airport extensively, and never had a problem. You just need to use common sense, which is true anyplace you travel.

If you want minimal risk of issues ask DCL about their transfers - usually someone from DCL is waiting in luggage area and they'll route you from there.

The only part of SJ I've heard is dangerous is La Perla, and it's not a place you'll stumble upon. Especially if you're going the very short distance between airport and Panamerican port. That's nowhere near La Perla.

Im glad you're starting to travel now. There's no point in being afraid to fly to places like Orlando or Miami etc. especially since you live in FL! Travel is freeing. Being smart is good. Being actually afraid is not.

My first solo flight was as a new 18 year old, Seattle to Miami. Redeye flight, connected in O'Hare. Woo! Trial by fire. :)

Glad you're starting to travel solo.

You will be fine form the airport to port, but I can understand being nervous. Perhaps once you have made your plans, you might find some people on your cruise to share a taxi or car service with. That way you do not have to travel to the port on your own.

My DH and I just flew into PR and took a RC cruise just this past September. If DCL doesn't have a transfer to the port, go to the designated taxi stand, they get the cab and set the fare. We felt very comfortable and safe...although you travel through some distressed areas (on the Hghway) to get to the port, the port itself is very safe and a bit out of the way for anyone you might cause you distress. Have a great time!

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better about it now! I'll definitely see if anyone would like to take a taxi with me or if Disney is offering any airport to port transportation. The flight I'm looking at arrives at 10:50 AM, so I think I'll have plenty of wiggle room even if it gets delayed.

im always willing to help a pretty young lady. This is what I can do. I will go on the cruise with you. I will fly to your place the day before than we can fly to Puerto Rico together. ( just kidding don't think my wife will go for it). Enjoy your cruise

As being part of the USA as an unincorporated territory. It's rather safe. Bad people exist no matter where you live or travel. Always be familiar with your surroundings, let friends and family know your itinerary. Have a good time and just use good discretion.

Flying to Puerto Rico is as safe as any public place these days. Posting online that you are a 21 year old female traveling alone is NOT safe. Just my honest opinion...be careful what you post
