Is Counter-Service Plan worth it?

Hi everyone. Our family is planning its first trip to WDW Resort this October. We're planning on staying at the new AoA resort. I'm having a hard time deciding on whether or not the Counter Service dining plan is worth the money. Because it's a new resort, I doubt Disney will offer free dining to those staying there - especially being that the section we're staying in will have only just opened.

My son has no interest in characters - he's still afraid of them. And he's not a sit-down-meal kind of kid. So the regular dining plan doesn't make sense for us.

Any insight you can offer would be great!

Thanks!!

I think it is probably worth it if you use all of your meals and snacks and don't need to purchase much out of pocket to meet your family's needs. Our family prefers quick service meals while at Disney and we have had the QS meal plan 3 times. It is nice to have everything prepaid, choose without looking at prices and not be faced with a bill at every meal. Lately however, we are finding it doesn't always fit with the way we would like to eat especially now that daily snacks have been reduced from 2 to 1. For example - each CS meal credit buys an entree, dessert and drink but sometimes we wish we could get a little treat later in day from a food stand rather than take the standard dessert offered with the meal. I also have a son who likes to make a lunch out of snack items (apple slices, pb&j, chips, large milk) and that doesn't fit with the meal plan unless I want to use up a bunch of snack credits. On our last trip we ended up with a couple extra meals due to late arrival and early departure on travel days and were unable to get food court staff to trade the extra CS credits for snack credits due to a Jan 1 policy change. That said, the QDP can provide savings and convenience if it fits your family's eating habits. I think the value is for children is particularly good though in some places the selection is limited. You can check out some menus here and see if it will work for you. http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm

We just had free QSDP, our first experience with Disney dining plans, and while we liked not thinking about prices, we probably wouldn't pay for it the next time. For us, there were just way too Many desserts...when we really would have preferred a salad or soup.

I wish they would eliminate the desserts from the meal combo and give us a couple snack credits instead. The dessert eaters could use them for dessert and the rest of us would have an extra water, soup or whatever. It would be a great way to allow families to make healthier choices and reduce waste while on the dining plan.

I have not priced out the QSDP, but last I did it was not much of a savings plan. I have priced and used the regular DDP more recently (1QS, 1TS, 1 snakc eahc day) The regular DDP used to offer some savings, but in 2012, it's not much. It really only offers some savings if you use all components, and there's no refunds. On the flip, having food prepaid, can avoid the feeling of being nickel and dimed.

As pp popster said, it can be nice to have meals prepaid, and to know that this is effectively the max you will pay for food, but unless you follow plan and use all components, then it does lock you into desserts and drinks. We aren't huge on desserts, and largely prefer drinking water much of the time. Truly the QS desserts are nothing exceptional. Even the TS ones are often too much food for us. So next trip, I may well skip DDP.

The value of any plan has a good deal to do with where you are staying and where you plan to eat. It sounds like the new resort is goingto have some great options. You are not going to want to eat ALL meals there, but likely you'll eat there quite a bit.

I think you will also be at WDW during the Food and Wine Festival. That is one time/place where having a DP with snack credits can be a good savings. A few years ago, I had the small lobster roll, which was going for $10, with a snack credit. (most snacks are items $4 and under, except at the festival) You can look up the 2011F&W festival brochure to get an idea of the kind of treats they have. The items at the booths are tasting portions, so not huge, but fun. If you focus on using your snacks in Epcot, you'll get a lot out of them. If you pay oop, then you may feel nickel and dimed.

Typically, we do a QS breakfast at our resort, maybe snack or lunch in the parks and for us a TS dinner at a resort/Epcot. We often share food items.

One nice thing aout skipping the DDP - is that you could -do ONE fun TS meal - maybe a buffet. I hear when you say your son doesn't like long sit down meals, and doesn't like characters...but Disney has LOTS of fun meal options that don't have characters. At a bufffet for example, you have food faster than most quick serve places - so your son won't have to endure a long meal delay. After a long day at the parks, a nice dinner is great. If you skip DDP - then you can at least consider this an OPTION after you arrive at WDW and see a place that looks fun. Many places at WDW require reservations, but many also allow walk ups. (or you can ask about another day)

So I knowI gave you mixed information, but much of the decision has to do with your own comfort and preferences. Do you feel morecomfortable having items prepaid, but have to think about using all your credits- or you do feel more comfortable with the freedom of choice?

Still one last consideration is transportation. If you have your own car, then you would be able to pick up a few things from a grocery store. The values don't typically have a fridge (Maybethe new resort does? Always a key room feature.) or coffeemakers. But even a few non-perishable items, like bottled water can be the difference in savings. A case of bottled water is $5. A single water bottle is $2.50, or a snack credit. (Tap water is always free, but not always convenient to get.)

Will you save a ton of money? No.

Will it take out the stress of continuing to spend more and more money once you're in the park? Yes.

We just look at it as pre paying our meals. Especially if you are on the QS plan.

Yes, but the flip side of this is that you have to keep track of the points you've used, and the points you have left. I usually go with extended family which complicates things considerably, but I have to keep track that our meals are being recorded properly. On the last two visits, I've found mistakes. You also effectively have to make sure you use all your points.

Some folks on the plan find they DON'T look at price. Others end up noticing price MORE than they would have because they are focused on maximizing point value. Do you pick the $1.89 milk carton with your lunch, or the $2.89 soft drink?

I bring this up because it kind of comes down to what you know about your family. Either way the differene is probably not huge, and there is no wrong answer....just which one you prefer.

I've done both DDP and non-DDP. Both have worked for us.

Thanks everyone for the great information. There are certainly some points I never thought of. I think we're going to go ahead with the dining plan - mainly for the reason that we don't have to worry about paying for food once we're down there. If we break even, I'll be happy!!

Thanks again!

Do keep in mind however that the dining plan really only feeds you for 2 meals - 2 CS per person per day plus 1 snack per day. So for one meal you need to either eat in the room or pay for it OOP or do what we do which is split CS meals and portion them out so you end up with enough meals at the end. So there are 3 of us (all adults on the meal plan) - we eat 2 CS for Breakfast, 2 CS for lunch and 2 for dinner - split all of the food between the 3 of us and believe me are not hungry. So we use our "correct" allowance for meals each day. This plan doesn't even cover all of our food because we tend to arrive early on day 1 (drive overnight). If we're staying 9 nights and thus have 9 sets of dining plan credits but yet 10 days in the parks so we end up eating at least some breakfasts in the room to cover the 'shortfall'.

We used the QSDP for the 2nd time last Oct. and I'm writing a review of it (only 1.5 days left to post) if you would like to check out what we ate.

If I was paying for it I'm not sure if I would do it, especially now that the 2nd SC is gone. However, I do love getting it for free. We also did the regular DDP 6 times (only once paid for) and I like the freedom of not having to make, and keep, ADRs. And my DM really likes that feature.

Have a great trip!

So if I'm staying 5 nights I get five days of the dining plan?”

yes!

So on the QS that's 10 CS and 5 snacks per person total to use during your stay

or on the regular dining plan it's 5 TS, 5 CS and 5 snacks per person

each plan gives you a resort mug to use during your stay
