Is booking the fantasmic package at mgm on a wednesday in mid october really neccessary? if we go to theatre about 1/2 hour before show, would we get decent seat without the package?

I would guess that you probably wouldn't get a great seat only 30 minutes before. We went last year near the beginning of November and did the package. After we watched all of the people filtering in we were really glad we did! From what I have read on the boards, that attraction fills up every night regardless of season.

Carol,

We were there last year the first week of June - a crowded time - and decided to do Fantasmic without the dinner package. We arrived 1 hr. early to be safe and the wait went quick. My DH got us all something to eat and the kids played cards. We had a better seat then all those times we sat in the "dinner package" seats.

My DW and I are planning on doing the Fantasmic Dinner Pkg on Thur 10/7. We hate to wait and felt this way would be better for us. We head into the theater 15-20 min before the show and it has worked great for us in the past. We also decided to do Hollywood and Vine for dinner because we didn't want to spend extra for the package. The price for the buffet is the same ($19.99) whather you do Fantasmic or not.

Fantasmic IS just a show. It is a terrific show with lasers and fireworks and Mickey taking on the villains; that is shown at the end of the day at MGM/Studios. The show is VERY popular and guests have been known to wait in line for two hours or more to get a good seat at the show. Disney has put together the Fantasmic Dinner Package to help folks who do not want to wait that long and to help out the park's restaurants. You can have dinner at any of three restaurants and receive a voucher to Fantasmic. This allows you to enter Fantasmic from a different entrance about 30 min before hand. The restaurants are The Brown Derby, Mama Melrose, and Hollywood & Vine. So, you get dinner and a show without having to wait an inordinant amount of time. For more info check out www.allears.com, it has info on the pkg and menus from the restaurants.:)

Unless you really want the meal at one of the restaurants offered, I'd bypass the package and just plan to be there 45 minutes ahead. IMO, location of the reserved seating section for the dinner package people really detracts from the show. It's all the way to the far right. From there, you don't get a prime view of everything happening, you are exposed to backstage areas (which, again, take away from the experience), and toward the end of the show you'll even be getting glimpses of the Epcot fireworks in the distance.

By 45 minutes out in the off-season, you should have no problem still getting a seat. Worst case, you'll be in the last section on the far left, which is the same quality as the reserved seating. More likely, you'll be closer to the middle and have a better viewing angle for the show.

WE went last year on Thurs. Oct 16 and did the package at Mama Melrose. We had planned on a sit down dinner that night so it was no big change for us. We arrived 35-40 minutes before the show and were amazed at how full the non-reserved section was.
I think it ended up being SRO for anyone showing up much later. I thought our seats were great, and we got totally lost in the show- of course it was our first time seeing it so we were really caught up in the magic. I would definately do this again next time!!
