Is Boma really a must do?

We ate at Boma in February 2004 for the first time after a CM had recommended it. The Squash Soup is out of this world. It was so good I asked for the recipe and it was sent to me within a week of returning home via e-mail - I've made it several times and all that have eaten it have now requested the recipe.

Some dishes at Boma seem to change with the season - my friend went in June and they did not have what she now calls her favourite soup.

We are going again in March 2005 and are planning a dinner there.

This is my dad's favorite resturant on property. They are coming down in Feb. and are staying at AKL for the first night. So of course, we have to go to Boma for dinner. I am not crazy about it, but when my dad visited me in Sept, we went for breakfast & loved it. I agree with Majestic and Ducklite - try the breakfast , it's great! If you like breakfast, next time, you might want to try dinner.

Just my two cents...enjoy your trip!

Thanks for all of the wonderful replys. I'm leaning toward trying it not only for the food, but also as a chance to look around the resort. I know we could just go visit the resort without eating there, but I know we would never get around to doing that.

I love to try different types of food. I did not care for the spices that were used. I really didn't even like the smell. The desserts were excellent. The kids buffet was good. The mac n cheese was great. It was the meat dishes that I didn't like. I was glad I experience Boma but it is not a must do. Good luck.

My family and I really enjoyed Boma. I am glad I went. The food was good; the soups were delicious. The interaction with the chefs was very pleasant. It added up to a great experience for my family. All that being said, I most likely won't go back soon. Just want to experience other restaurants. Nothing negative to say about Boma at all. It delivered everything I wanted. It was a great experience, but there are too many other places to eat at for me to want to go back anytime soon.

My Dh has some nut allergies (macadamia, pistashio, cashew). Will they be able to accomodate him, or should we pick another restaurant?

We tried it last Nov for the first time. We REALLY enjoyed it. A MUST DO?? Well not really but I would say people should try it at least once. We liked many of the dishes and the desserts were sooo yummy.
I like pretty basic food and DH likes different and unique foods. We were equally happy with our meals. We are going back in April and we talked about going here again and although we really enjoyed it we would like to try some other places.
The resort is beautiful and really added to our enjoyment of the restaurant.

We went to Boma's for dinner last month and although we enjoyed the variety, I would say it was a 'one time thing'. We loved the soups but were a little disappointed in the meat dishes. The desserts were good but the Zebra Domes did not live up to all the hype.

Is it a 'must do'? I would say it should be tried at least once - and if you love it, keep going back!

Do yourself a favor and cross the stairway to Jiko's. The food is far superior to Boma's and if you have kids, they can order whatever they like on the children's menu (and you'll save $). If you're looking for more of an African inspired meal, you'll definitely find it at Jiko's. If you feel you MUST eat at Boma's, I'd listen to the rest and hit it for breakfast, you'll be much happier. Besides, stuffing yourself to the gills is alot more fun at breakfast when you've got all day to run around, than dinner when you just roll back to bed.

My family tried Boma for the first time last June. My mother is an elderly, stuck-in-her-ways type who is basically afraid of any food outside her own limited experience (she typically orders only burgers, steak, or meatloaf at any restaurant; vegetables must be cooked to mush; she is quite vocal with servers if the food seems "weird" to her). My kids (DD 10, DS 6) have been exposed to some food of different nationalities, but none of us had ever tried African cuisine. I took a little of everything (yes, I was too stuffed to move!), and the others stuck with familiar items until I rendered judgment on the more experimental ones. I was frustrated at their lack of adventurousness at the time, but surprisingly everyone raved about Boma for days afterward, and whenever we discuss future trips, someone always proclaims dinner there a must. Go figure. For my part, I loved it and felt it had the perfect balance of familiar/comforting and new dishes. If anything, try it once, especially if you've never had the opportunity to try African foods.

I was not a Boma fan. It seemed as though everything had some kind of "sweet" component to it, and I do not like my dinner food to taste sweet.

I would not eat at Boma's again. We actually tried to get in w/o ressies on our Feb trip last year and we couldn't so we went to Jiko's (across from Boma, it is upscale sit down restaurant). Now that was purely unbelieveable african cuisine! We loved it and after hearing all the raves about Boma we were excited to try there. Of course it is not even close to Jiko. The food was mediocre in our opinion. Not worth the crowds and the hype. I would definitely say Jiko is a must do!

We ate breakfast at Boma's and LOVED it! The variety was excellent and the food was hot & plenty! Staff was also very nice and efficient! I just LOVED LOVED LOVED their sausage casserole!! The smells from this restaurant are just divine!

Yes, Boma is a must do for us. We enjoy this buffet for it's variety. There is always something new and different tro try as well as old favorites.
