Is anyone familiar with the Miami/southern FL area?

We are taking a cruise next summer that leaves from the port in Miami. We are planning on staying three extra days in that area after the cruise. Is there enough to do in the Miami area, or are we better off renting a car and going elsewhere, like Ft. Lauderdale or something?

We like the beach, but I don't know if I can convince my family to spend 3 days at a beach after just having gotten off a cruise with a lot of beach ports.

Any suggestions?

What ages are you traveling with? There's lots to do in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. They are only about 30 miles apart as well, so you can see both areas.

In Miami, there's South Beach, the Lincoln Road area (sightseeing), there's the Everglades to the west (Take an airboat ride!!!)

There are good children's museums in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. There's a fun water taxi in Fort Lauderdale, and there's also the Jungle Queen in Fort Lauderdale, a very kitschy nostalgic boat ride down the Intracoastal Waterway.

My kids are 13, 16 and 19. They probably wouldn't get much out of the children's museum, but they are pretty good about going to regular museums, if there are any of those.

What is there to do in South Beach other than the beach?
