Is anyone else's kid mad about the Percy Jackson movie?

DD18 saw the movie and loved it, but she has never read any of the books, but she is going to read it now!:thumbsup2

My 12 year old said that he was probably going to be disappointed while we were driving to the movie. We then discussed an important point - the movie is BASED on the novels, it is not a recreation of the novels. So, enjoy the movie for what it is, without expectations. After it was over he said that they changed a lot, but that the movie was awesome. He isn't sure how they are going to be able to move forward with the series in movie form, but he is excited to see the next installment (if one is made).

Exactly!

That is exactly how my son felt about ERAGON. The movie really did not follow the book and even years later, my son is still steamed about it.

I liked the PERCY movie. I had not read the books....but intend to as soon as I can get copies.

I hope it doesn't turn out like GOLDEN COMPASS did and no sequels get purchased. We really enjoyed that movie and were looking forward to the next one....that is never to be.

Eragon was a disaster. The movie didn't just lack from plot changes. The entire screenplay was just poorly done. Sad.

My 14 year old was furious when she got home this afternoon. She could not believe how much the movie did not follow the book plot. she felt that other than the character names, there was nothing in the book that was the same.

My 10-year old ds said, "If the movie were a little more like the book, then it might have been a little bit like the book." He wasn't upset, but he did say that there were few similarities and that the book was better. He enjoyed the movie on it's own, though there were things that he found "wrong" for reasons other than that they didn't follow the book.

We went to the movie last weekend and really enjoyed it. My daughter liked it so much that we got her the second book for Valentines day. We are reading it now (she's 7) and realize we should have gotten the first book! There is a lot referenced that did not happen in the movie. She loves book 2 though. It's a great thing when your child is begging you to read to her every 5 minutes. We will read book 1 next though to see what we missed before we move on in the series.

Well, DBF and I went and saw the movie on Valentines Day.

Than I came and saw this thread...

and now i'm about to sit down with this nifty pile 'o Percy Jackson books here. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sure i'll enjoy them! (i seem to like them all, Potter, Twilight, Eragon...)

Went to see the movie on Friday with the hubby, and we liked it, though clearly it was a kids movie from a kids book (for instance, we were both a bit flabbergasted at both his parents saying they looooved eachother, but then not taking the chance to see eachother when they could, but it makes sense when it's from a kids point of view. What's important is the relationship with the kid to each parent.)
However, there was one big plot hole that stuck out in my head.

What was Persephone doing in the Underworld on the Summer Solstice???
That makes no sense at all! That's right in the middle of the time she would be away from the Underworld!

Persephone wasn't even in the book. She was only mentioned. That was one of the changes everyone is up in arms about. Of course, most kids wouldn't notice this error.

Well, I'm glad Persephone was in the movie, because a) there really wasn't enough presence of goddesses, if it weren't for her and the very short time we see Athena, you would have though that all the gods were male! and b) Rosario Dawson in a cute outfit bouncing around always makes me happy.
I have to admit, I didn't notice it until a couple of hours after I saw the movie, but now it's practically all I can see. It just.. huge error of the way that world is supposed to work that would have been easily fixed if they either made it hte Spring Equinox (and this being her last act before she leaves the Underworld, which would have been a nice vengeance thing, with a line like "I'm sure I'll pay for this come Fall!" or something) or the Winter Solstice.
Meh. Especially if you're going to go so far as to add a character, make sure the character actually fits in the way you're adding them.

Oh, yeah they would. My DD was fuming and has a running list of all the differences and that was definatley there!:lmao:

we saw the movie yesterday. DS12 has read three of the books,he enjoyed the movie and didn't mind the changes he hopes they will make more movies on the series. I enjoyed the movie also.

just saw the movie tonight and DD12 really didn't mind the changes, but then again she knew to expect it because of this thread!:)

I haven't started the books yet and I enjoyed it.

My 12 year old has read the books multiple times but he still enjoyed the movie. He likes to talk about the changes they made and understands that the movie is based on the book and that there are always changes. He figured this out way back when with Harry Potter. Movies are movies, books are books.

I am not sure if this has already been mentioned, but make sure you STAY THROUGH THE CREDITS!!!!!!:)
