Is Alamo Hire car upgrade cheaper to do in uk or in us

We have booked a compact 4 door with Alamo, pre paid via Thomas cook but think we may need to upgrade due to 2 large and one medium cases. Which may not fit in boot(trunk). Does any one know if it is cheaper to upgrade before we go or when car is picked up.
Also we need child seat/booster for DS 5yo.

In my experience the boot on a compact is easily able to take more luggage than is on the guide. American cars are a lot bigger than British equivalent models. Also, with Alamo you get directed to an area in their lot and can take your pick of what's there, so just get what looks good for you.

I've never taken an upgrade, but we usually hire an economy and end up with a compact because they don't have many economy cars in. You do seem to get offered good deals at the desk though.

A compact is the same size as a booted ford focus. In fact thats what we got last time!

We've decided against paying $6.99 per day for a booster seat that we're squeezing a booster into the luggage and as dd is 7 and it's not the law for her to have a seat we'll chance it and stop by walmart or target on the way and get her one. Over 5's don't need a seat unless they weigh less than 40lbs.

We've always taken our own child seat - Have heard many bad reports about the state of one's provided by car hire companies.

Saves you $ and normally the airlines will carry for free, just like taking a buggy. Would recommend you take a heavy duty bin bag to wrap it up & stick label on, before you get to check in desk
