My DD wants an Ipod Touch for Christmas. I convinced her last Christmas that Santa would not bring one, but of course it felt like everyone else got one from Santa!! So anyways, this year it is her must have and I would like to get her one. Is the 8GB Ipod good enough for what she wants it for? (music, games, etc) They cost almost $200, but the 32GB is about $100 more. What is the main difference between the two ... does a ten year old really need that much 'power'???

Are there any other accessories that I should buy to go along with the Ipod?

The younger one is asking too ... but I am not sure an 8 year old needs an Ipod. Of course the argument is once again that 'so-and-so' and 'so-and-so' has one!!!

Thanks so much!!!

I think the I Home is good to go with them. It is a charger that also will play the Ipod when it is docked. It ranges in price but can get a nice one with speakers built in or a clock for under $40. Funny my 10yo son begged last year and I wouldnt give in but am caving this year. For us it is not so much about the cost vs do they really need the internet and all the things that go with that. He is the only one of his friends that didn't get one last year but I didn't care b/c i'm not buying something b/c everyone else has it. This year it is the only thing he asks for so what do you do and also I feel like he is a bit older and if I monitor the internet we may be ok.

The 8GB is perfectly adequate for child, unless she's going to be putting a lot of movies on it as one movie will eat about 3GB of space. I don't let my kids put movies on them and they each have about 60 or more apps (I just counted youngest DS has 63 Apps - including Appzilla which has another 200 apps contained within the app) and several hundred songs.

I second PP a dock is a great idea. We have both an iHome dock and a knock off, but still name brand (sanyo), one that I picked up at Target both work equally well, though the knock off cost a LOT less. Both have an alarm clock function. The kids love to plug it in and play away.

Also, I'd recommend investing in a couple of extra pairs of headphones to have on hand. I find my kids lose them or break them really easy. I go thru 3 or 4 pairs per year per kid.

ETA - another great accessory is either a case or a skin to help protect it. You can get them cheaply on Amazon (I paid $3 for a rubber case) or if you have Mycokerewards you can get a Skinit redemption code for a couple hundred points.

:) I think an 8GB is perfect. I have a 32GB Iphone 3Gs and and it is half filled with music books, etc. So I could fill a 16 GB and think a pre-teen would be fine with an 8 GB. Vera Bradley has some cute cases like the tech cases that are cute for the charger and earphones.

One thing I like to do is (and I am 42) is go online to design my own skins. Thre is a sitecalled Unique skins that is half the price of Skin-it. So for $6.99 you can design your own. If I can figure out how to do it anyone can. I understand that it may be more prudent to get a hard protection case for someone that young. Just wanted to put it out there. They just come in the mail and are easy for an adult to place on the Touch.

What about an Ipod Nano for the little one? They have cool watch bands for them now and the face of the nano becomes a watch face--they even have Mickey. Very cool.

:) I have tiny ear holes and the Apple earphones just do not stay in my ears--they are huge. I use skull candy earphones. I get them at Staples for about $19 and they have different size pads to put on the earpods. Very comfy and they stay in. They also come in different colors there is also a website.

One of the cool places to get wallpapers is Idesign or something like that. You will need to monitor those sites since there are images that my be disturbing--many of the sites have the Disney characters though.

I am so mature I currently have a Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer skin--he is the character from the movie. So you generally do not have trouble getting them to do licensed characters. So far I have had a Jack Sparrow, Leonitus from 300 and now my Christmas reindeer.

I highly, highly recommend the Skull candy.

My DBF is 36 and I gave him the 8 gig a couple years ago......DD15 also has the 8 gig, they seem to be fine for both of them. altho if I had the money I'd get DBF a 32 gig (or an iPhone) and give his 8 gig to DD11. Definitely get screen protectors and a case, screen protectors are actually a very good investment. Most places right now will have package deals, when I got DBF his I also got the screen protectors, a case, a wall charger and an iTunes gift card, this came with the iTouch and it was only $25 more, so basically everything was free, I paid for the gift card and the touch and got the rest of the goodies as a bonus. :)

I highly recommend the Otterbox Defender case. I just paid $75 to have my daughters cracked screen replaced... CRAZY!! She now has the Otterbox Defender and it seems VERY protective... it protects the entire unit including the screen.

I just put 2 of the 8gb on layaway for my DD's ages 15 and 11. I am going to get the otter box for them too but do I need to get them the cute little hard cases too?

The Otterbox Defender is a hard case covered by a gel case. It seems really sturdy, but she's only been using it for two days. I got ours on ebay for $23...they usually sell for much more.

Thanks. Do you know if the otter boxes are different sizes for each generation? Crazy me didn't even look to see what generation I did get? And the lady at Walmart just got them from the case and took them straight to the layaway department. And too I don't know anything about ipod's either.

I believe you would need to know if it was a 3rd. or 4th generation. Do you remember if it had Facetime? If it had Facetime it was a 4th gen.

I bought both DD ipods last year fir Christmas! The must have present! DD 14 uses hers all the time! Music, books, internet you name it! 8Gb seems plenty for her!

DD8 thought she lost hers about June, I found it and the screen was broken! I never, I repeat never buy the extra warranties but this time I caved and bought the Office Depot warranty as they price matched with Target and I got a great deal! ($168 for the 8gb) Called the 1800# they sent me a Office Depot gift card for the purchase price! Now what to do for DD 8 as she doesn't know I found it! I don't think she really cares one way or the other.

I guess the moral to my story is 8 is too young in our case anyways, and look into an extended warrranty because the screen will break easily! I usually use Square Trade if any, this was unusual for me to buy from the retailer. I was impressed how they handled it and sent a GC right away !

I just paid about $80 for a pre-owned iPod on www.cowboom.com it is a division of Best Buy. I am taking a chance that it's not a total piece of garbage, but have had many people tell me it's a legit company. Today and Tomorrow you can use the code: cyber20 to get an additional 20% off plus free shipping. Lots more there to choose from. Just thought I'd let you know in case you DO get the 8 year old an iPod. :goodvibes

To the person who paid to have the screen replaced....who did you go through? I have an ipod that has water damage and I would LOVE to have it fixed but don't know where to take it.....

Did you have the otter box for their ipods? I plan on purchasing the otter box and having it on my girls ipods before they even open them Christmas morning. My 15 year old is more responsible than my 11 year old, but I know if I don't get both an ipod I will be in for it. I didn't purchase the warranty, simply because of the warranty that we purchased 2yrs ago on our laptops we have gone through pure crap with. One of our laptops crashed and our dell warranty had expired so I called the # from our extended warranty and they tell us that we needed to contact dell that the problem we had wasn't something they can do. :confused3 Needless to say after wiping out everything out of my computer and downloading the software again the computer is working.:thumbsup2

A 32GB isn't more power, it is just more storage. My dd has an older gen 8GB, and its completely full with apps/games and a few videos. She has no music on it because she doesn't have the space. She wanted a current gen. becase of the facetime and the ability to take video. There is no way an 8GB would work for her needs, since she would still want all her apps, and to be able to put her itunes music on it.
I'm not sure how old your dd is, but if she is just going to use it for apps and music, an 8GB should be fine. If she is planning on having movies and videos or using it to take her own videos I don't think it will be enough.

No. I looked at the display but never noticed what generation it was. I got them at Walmart. They were both white. When I go to walmart dot com it says that Walmart doesn't have the 4th gen. at our store. But I have searched on walmart dot com for the other gen. and can't find anything else. I will check to see what gen. I have when I go back to Walmart so I can get the right otter box though. I did search on ebay for the other gen. and didn't see white in the other gen. other than the 4th gen. :confused3
Can't you tell I am a real dummy about electronics:rotfl:

Thanks for your replies! I had no idea about 3rd or 4th generation ... will be sure to check that as I know I have heard the oldest talk about Facetime! I also saw some adorable Hello Kitty protective cases (skins?) at Walmart - I am going to go and look for them this weekend! Time to just get them and know I have them for the girls for Christmas!!!

Thanks again!!!!

Otterbox is a MUST. My 12 step daughter dropped her ipod touch by accident on to the GRASS and the screen cracked. I have dropped my otterbox covered iphone down a flight of stairs and it is right as rain!!! Protect your investment!!!

I bought mine a third generation Ipod touch at a substantial discount off of ebay. My DD uses the ipod to text and downloads free apps all the time. I recently bought a digital pad for $85 and I am sure we will be all arguing over that now.

Is it wrong that I just bought 2 iPod Touch and it is 3ish weeks until Christmas, so I can play with one of them for 3 weeks until I need to repackage and wrap them up for the kids? LOL

They are neat!
