All right. I do have talents, but I have to admit that while I have given instruction on the ipods, I don't know a lot about them. I recently went through and put ALL of our cds on my ipod library. All but my Christmas CDs. I do have some Christmas on there, and the reason I don't want to put more on there is because when I randomly play through my library, I don't want to listen to Christmas music in June.

I know I can make playlists. My DD has her own from my songs and her own. But, is there a way to put the Christmas songs in their own category and not have them in the main library?

Sure is :thumbsup2 Just uncheck them in iTunes and sync your ipod. They won't be on your ipod. Then at Christmastime, you can create a playlist that includes all of your Christmas songs that you can list to.

I agree with you that all the features of iPods can be confusing and there really isn't a lot of instruction included with them. I've found the only way to really know what you're doing is to play around with iTunes and see what all the different commands do. I did figure out a very quick way to play only my regular music during the non-holiday season (and vice versa) by doing this--a Smart Playlist.

Click on "File" on the top left. A menu should drop down. Then click on "New Smart Playlist" which is the second or third item in the list. A box should pop up on your screen with three different spaces in it. Go to those spaces. The first one (says "Artist" when the box pops up) you change with the dropdown arrow to "Genre." The second box can be changed to "Does not Contain" and then change the third box to "Holiday". That gives you a playlist that has everything but your Holiday music on it because when it makes the playlist, it excludes everything that says "Holiday" in the "Genre" column of iTunes. I call the list "Every day" and when I play it, no Christmas music comes up. You can do the same thing to make a Christmas playlist, by filling in the three boxes to say "Genre" "Contains" "Holiday." When you've hit the OK at the bottom, you'll get a box on the side that says "Untitled Playlist" and you just type in the name of your playlist, like "Christmas Music."

If any of the music doesn't say "Holiday" automatically when you put the cds in (I think my Charlie Brown cd said Jazz), you can change the genre listing in iTunes just by clicking on it and typing over it.

You can add more than one restriction for the playlist by clicking the little box with the + sign in it. That just gives you another row of boxes to further narrow down your playlist (for example if you're in the mood to hear only a couple of artists, you can create a new smart playlist, and then you can for example change the first row to "Artist" "is" "U2" then click the plus sign and change the second row that pops up to "Artist" "is" "Faith Hill" and so on and you'll get a playlist of only those artists you choose).

I'm not sure I'm explaining it well, but once you get in the right place and get the menu for the Smart Playlist, it's very self explanatory and easy to navigate. I hope this helps. Have fun playing around with it!

Actually, if you want to use shuffle having separate playlists isn't going to help because shuffle goes between all your playlists (at least it does on mine) . However, if you don't want to include the christmas songs in a shuffle, go to the library under music, right click the song (a pop up window opens) go to options and click the skip when shuffling box.

I guess there are a bunch of ways to get what you want :) .

They might all be different because on mine (5th Gen video, 30 g), if you select a playlist to listen to, you can shuffle within the playlist you choose and it stays on that specific playlist. If you don't choose a playlist (like one you specifically make with everything except Christmas music), it selects from the whole library and that would include the Christmas music.

That's what I do. I have all my holiday music in a "Christmas" playlist. On the Music tab in iTunes, I simply leave it unchecked until Christmastime rolls around. :thumbsup2

It does shuffle within playlists, you need to be sure you have selected the playlist and just your library.

I use the genres to sort my playlists and I use both smart and manual playlists. For instance, I have all of my Christmas music as genre "Christmas Music." You can select all of your tracks and do this at one time (get info, genre "Christmas Music"). I do not play this playlist until the day after Thanksgiving :)

I have lots of custom genres set up to manage just the way I want. I also have all of the children's music with genre "Children's Music," but then I also have a playlist for each that I have manually set up that pulls just the songs they each like best.

There are two ways of shuffling. One is to set shuffle on from the iPod itself. The other is the shuffle each playlist in iTunes itself before syncing. You do this by sorting the list by number and clicking the shuffle button (bottom left) on. If you don't like the way it shuffled click it off and then on again and it will reshuffle. When you synch with your iPod the shuffled list will be intact. This is the way I prefer to do it since I have some lists I want to played shuffled and others (like my audiobooks) that I don't.

Hope this has helped.

I have a somewhat related iPod question - I know I can uncheck the DIS podcasts so they all do not synch to my iPod but stay in the library. Has anyone found a way to store parts of the iTunes library someplace other than the hard drive of the computer - like on portable drive or a CD? I have an older computer so no RW DVD drive. My hard drive is filling up with DIS Podcasts and I don't want to delete them from library - sometimes it is fun to listen to old ones.

Any thoughts?

the only thing I can think of is if you go buy an external hard drive then take your audio file and save it to that hard drive instead of your computer!? OR if you have an Ipod just download the new ones to your Ipod then delete your podcasts off your computer they are easy enough to reload to your computer if you ever need them!?

Thanks for all of your help. I was hoping for a really easy way. I tried excluding the holiday genre, and it didn't work.

Did it not make a playlist that was just every day music? You would have to play that specific list (found under "Playlists" in the iPod menu rather than the whole library if you wanted to listen to music without the Christmas music in it. Feel free to PM me if you like.

I hope you can get it to do what you want! Good luck:)

That's what I do too. The last thing I want to hear is Jingle Bells in June when I put my Ipod on shuffle! ;)
