Not sure what to get I know she would use it for listening to music. Want something to last her a few years.

When my kids wanted Ipod, I made them buy them with their own money. They were about 10 and 12 at the time I believe... I knew they woulod take better care of them if they had to shell out on their own. LOL!

Anyway, I directed them to Overstock.com. They got refurbished ones that came good as new. They got the cheaper ones with a small screen (not the Shuffles, but I can't think of the name) and they were about 80 bucks, as opposed to 150 bucks brand new. They came with new headphones, charges, and computer connectors. They are still going strong with no issues!

I agonized over buying my 10 year old one of these about a year ago. I thought she was too young. Finally after much thought I did it and she has used it so much I feel like it was a great investment. I bought one off the Apple website and it was refurbished. I got her an 8 gb and in hindsight maybe should have gotten a 16 gb, but it's good for now.

We download songs, movies, etc. and she uses this thing all the time. I was so envious I had to buy my own.....lol.

she is paying for it with her own money that she got for her first communion. I just dont want her to over spend for things she will never use on it.

The newer generation of Ipod nano has a camera and this is the one that we bought our 8 y/o DS last fall. He never uses the camera, but he does like to watch his TV shows that we have downloaded from itunes, so I am glad that the newer nano has a larger screen than the previous generation. I also suggest looking on apple to find a refurbished nano. He takes very good care of it and is anxiously awaiting the day when he can get a touch, but that isn't going to happen for a few more years. :lmao:

we got the little kids shuffles which has worked out pretty well. But I'd get a refurbished one as the new style is so tiny and has odd controls that it's not the best choice for a little kid.

DD10 has an iPod Nano (4 GB). She's had it for 2 years now and loves it. She's able to watch TV shows (1.99 per episode to purchase from iTunes) -- she has some tunes (and has discovered her father's old Bill Cosby standup routines), but I like the flexibility of her being able to watch on it as well.

DD got the 16g nano. We got the 16 gig becasue we wanted to put a few movies on it as well as music. She enjoys it very much.

The iPod Touch is a good choice. You can watch movies/tv showa, listen to music and run applications on it.

I highly recommend apples refurbed items, you save some money and get the same warranty as with their new products. The refurbs look like new.

DD(7) has the Ipod Nano. She loves it and it's her most prized posession. It holds plenty of music, she can watch shows on it and her and her friends use it to make videos all the time. Oh and the battery is really good too.

My 10-year old got a nano when she was 9 and she LOVES it. She takes very good care of it. Of course, now she wants an ipod touch but I tell her "no". Before the nano she had a cheap MP3 player. She likes the nano a LOT better.

My older DS (14) had 3 Nanos before getting the Touch. He took great care of all of them, but always wanted the new one when it came out. He has had his Touch since it was released and still uses it every day. Younger DS (10) had 2 Nanos before getting a Touch last year. I recommend the Touch, it seems to have alot more features than the Nano. Oh, and all of those old Nanos that are lying around the house still work - gotta give props to Apple for great products.

My kids have nanos that we got refurbished from Apple they work great. Saved a ton of cash that way.

I have a touch and they are constantly borrowing it from me so they can use the games, etc. There are tons of free apps out there for the touch. So far I have about 40 apps and haven't paid for any. My kids favorites are the zippo lighter :rotfl2: and the star wars lighsaber.

My DD got an 8GB iPod Nano when she was 8 and it was a very good deal! She used it (and took very good care of it) a lot. She used her Christmas money this past December to move up to an iPod Touch 32GB because of sheer need of space. We get Blu-Ray discs now so all those digital Disney movie copies were adding the space problem.

I highly recommend refurbs from Apple. :thumbsup2 I bought a 4GB nano and a Mac Mini from there and both worked great!

My three kids have ipods, they are 5, 7 and 8. My 7 year old got one for xmas first (she would sit and listen to my moms for hours, so my mom got her one). Then we bought my 8 year old one too, she kept stealing the other one.
Then we had a coast to coast summer road trip last summer, my 5 year old lucked out, we bought her an ipod, and a DS both refurbished. Really we bought it because we knew we were going to be gone 7 weeks, and we didn't want to hear the crying because she had neither an ipod or a DS.
All three kids use them a lot, surprisingly. They almost always bring them in the car. Plus, we travel a lot, so it is so worth it for them to have them. They listen to them in bed sometimes too.

My 8 year old son has an 8 GB Zune (Microsoft version of the Ipod). I LOVE it. He hooks it up to his XBOX 360 when he is playing games and I am able to monitor what he is hearing a little better. He loves that thing.

All four of our kids (4, 6, 9, and 12) have ipod Nanos...the 2nd generation w/out camera. I am so glad we chose this one as opposed to just the shuffle. It is wonderful to load each child up with his/her own movies for long car trips, etc. They can also use these to hook directly up to a t.v., which is also nice for traveling since we don't have to bring dvd's or need a dvd player. I got them off of ebay for a decent price, and haven't had any problems.

Now, of course, if your child received enough money, the iTouch is wonderful! You can put tons of apps on it to keep entertained anywhere. I also like that this is a bit bigger and can't be lost as easily.

My 9 yo got her first ipod last year. Just a shuffle, and it's worked out fine for her so far. I can see where something with a screen for roadtrips and such would be useful, so we'll probably upgrade to that in the next year or so (ooh, good Christmas idea!!!).

BTW, DH bought her a little speaker case for it last year, too, and that thing is really cool! It cost about $10, has the speakers on the outside, and unzips to keep the ipod in. It sounds great, and we often take it with us for music on the go. We just sometimes have to take turns whose tunes we're going to listen to. ;)

ObBudget Tip: Borrow CDs from your local library and you can get free music to put on your iPod.

DD 7 has an iTouch. Before that she had an iPod Video. She still has both, uses them both ALL THE TIME. We bought her the touch 2 years ago for Xmas because we were going on a long road trip and knew that having some shows, music and games would be helpful. We bought the touch instead of a DS because the games are SO MUCH CHEAPER!

I highly recommend the apple refurb store. We've bought several computers and iPods from there and never had a problem.
