Just got my 1st iPhone. Question is do I manually have to turn off cellular button when I am home to push all data to wi-fi or will it recognize a wi-fi signal and use that if it's available. Do not want to use up my data if I can use wi-fi at home

Once you connect to the wifi in the house once it will connect there automatically as soon as you are in range. Just click on settings then wifi and it should pick it up

No you don't have to turn off the cellular key. Just make sure wifi is always enabled and it will automatically pick it up each time

The iphone is designed to look for wifi signals before using cellular data. So unless you turn your wifi off it will always attempt to find a wifi signal.

One option you might want to turn off is the "ask to connect" if in wifi range. What this does is pick up signals where ever you go and ask if you want to connect. It was okay in the beginning, but it became annoying after a while. If I go someplace that I know has a good free wifi, I will manually connect to it in the settings.

Other than that, once you log into a wifi connection, it will always connect to it. It connects automatically for me at home and at school, and I don't have to do a thing.

You will know when you're on wifi or data by the icon on the top by the time. If you're on data, it will tell you 3g/4g which ever service you have. If you're on wifi, you'll get the 3 little signal lines.

if the signal drops, sometimes i have to reset it by turn it to airplane mode on and then off and then it kinda reboots and looks for wifi signal.

I am new to iphone and was charged for going over data first month - they couldn't explain why but did take charge off. So I am now keeping an eye on data usage but don't understand it all! I have wifi at home and have it listed in settings on phone but I checked usage today and it says data usage during the night and early morning when my phone is sitting here at home! Should this be happening?? Thanks for any advice!

Should latch on to the network if it is available (should doesn't mean will)... you can tell if it is on WIFI cause it has the little symbol there. My guess is to be absolutely sure you are on the network.

I know I messed up before on a PagePlus iPhone before it was on a "plan" and it was using the prepaid minutes that came with activation. I was in the house, but it wasn't connected to the network and I tried updating the apps. I thought it was on the network but it wasn't. I got this ugly message saying you are out of minutes and add more money. No big deal, I activated it on a plan and it was all good. Just be sure that the network icon is showing instead of 3G (on the older ones) the newer ones will probably say something like LTE.

Be weary of the range of your wireless router. Mine was on the floor in the living room on one side of the house and we couldn't get a wifi signal on anything in the back 2 bedrooms. That is with a VERY small house, only 1000 sq. foot ranch. I just lifted up the router and set it on the back of a piece of furniture and now can connect even in the backyard (unlike the house, you folks would probably think it is a very large yard. About an acre and a half and wifi nearly reaches the whole yard now compared to only reaching right on the other side of the walls.)

Go to Settings-->Cellular-->Data Roaming. Turn data roaming off and keep it off. This should solve the problem. You can also completely turn off your data by turning off Cellular Data, if you just want to restrict data to wi-fi, which might be useful if you're getting close to your data limit for the billing period.

Thank you all! You people rock - who woulda thought DisBoards would answer any kinda question asked!! Love it!

I want to comment. When I first got my iPhone it was not connecting to my wifi correctly and I was using data. I went to the apple store and they reset my phone which corrected the problem. You can reset your phone yourself or call apple and they should be able to help you. I found that my local verizon store was no help at all.

We also got a new router because our old one was having problems connecting to all the devices we now have. The old router was really cheap so we upgraded and find that our connectivity and speeds are much better now.

Thank you! I've been watching and seems better but will go to Apple store if I continue to have problems!

Just be aware if you leave wi-fi enabled all the time, it is a battery killer. If wi-fi is on all the time, your phone will continually search for a signal, draining your battery quickly.

I turn my wi-fi on only when I need to use it and turn it off when I'm finished.
