I will begin this with I am technology challenged. DD20 needs a new phone and her Ipod died last week, so I thought we should get her an Iphone and it can work as both. I am unsure of which one to get and how much memory she will need to keep music on it. She is due for an upgrade, so that is making it somewhat affordable. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. I hate to go the store not knowing and have them sell me a phone that is way over budget and not what she needs.

the iphone 3gs is free at at&t. We got our ds15 one a few weeks ago

I am not so great with techie stuff, but I have a 3g iPhone 4 & I have over 800 songs on it lol - along with apps, photos, etc & there's still alot of memory left. If she's due for an upgrade, I'd definitely do it

When you guys say 3g which do you have, the 16gb or the 32gb? I have the 16gb but have yet downloaded any songs on it. Thinking of trying that out!

I would just go ahead and get the newest model. In any scenario you are going to have to sign a 2 year contract. The 3G is technology from 4(?) years ago. In 2 more years of the contract.....

You can get the 3G for free or pay $199 for brand new technology. The plan is going to cost the same either way.

i would go with the newest 4s and get the largest memory size you can. I ahve a 32 gig iphone 4. between videos, apps, photos, and music i have used about 25 gig of memory and i still ahve another 10 months on my contract and it doesn't even have all of my music. I would like to have ti all on there but i have over 200gig of music.

So, how much music does she have? that might be somewhere to start. if it's something she is going to have for 2 years i would think at least 32. DH and DD have the 16 and both are almost full and have to take things off all the time.

The iPhone 4S is not 4G either. But the processor is much more speedy, and the siri thing is sort of nice.
I bought one the day they were available, everything was great except I hated the entire phone function. So I returned the phone. I suspect I would have the same issues with an iPhone 3 however.

Not 4G. But not 4 year old technology either.

And yes, the phone is pretty much the same as the initial phone. I had the original, and a 4G (not 4Gs) The phone is similar except the speaker is actually audible in the newer of the 2.

Honestly I would go middle of the road with a 4. For a 2 year contract, which you'll have to sign anyway, it's $99 and compared to the 4s that my friend has the speed boost from the 4s is not that noticeable unless you're doing something really processor/memory intensive. 3g seems silly to me to pay the data fee per month and end up with a phone that is so slow, even if it's free.

With the new features of the 4s, I would definitely go with that. I would choose the size she got depending on how much music she has, or expects to have. DS had a 32 already so I just got him the 64 4s. The camera on the 4s is so much better than the others that it alone is worth the difference.

I have the 3, and I'm techno challenged! DH just upgraded our operating system, and there are a few new fun things (the opening screen you swipe from "north to south" to get a new screen...)

anyway - I have an itunes account, and I have itunes on my computer - it was seriously easy to put the categories of libraries I wanted to my iphone - I even started a new one just for my iphone! (I also have easy listening, classical, and Christmas) I have the 16 and I havent even used 1/4 of the space!

I use the camera and movie feature all the time (DD in band) I use the voice notes (for her band as well - then move them over to the itunes)

I have 4 pages of apps - (mostly games that dd downloaded, as well as some things for school - )

I do understand about the latest and greatest (my dad has the 4, and he has no one to video chat with!!)

but I still think the 3 is still a viable phone as well. maybe its just for us techno challenged tho!

How big was the iPod? If she had a 20 gig ipod and it was full, then it forces you into the 4S. The 3GS and the 4 only come in 8GB models. Let me tell you, it's easy to fill 8GB. I have the 32 GB and I'm sitting at about 20 GB or so full.

Music alone takes up very little space. But if she wants to put movies, videos, TV shows, etc. on her iPod, she will probably want at least 16 gb.

OP here, DH went to AT & T store last night and the guy told him not to get an Iphone that some type of android phone was better :confused3. He is at Best Buy right now with DD and looking at phones, trying to fiquire this out.

If she had an ipod before, and all her music is on Itunes, I would get and Iphone. I had an android, and I liked it, but I LOVE my new Iphone. It's so much easier to get all my music and movies on it, since I already had everything I owned on Itunes.

That's BS especially since she is all ready using iTunes. Yes there are android apps out there that will let you synch your itunes music, but still. I think he didn't want to deal with the pre-order/order fiasco going on now with the 4s so told your husband that the Andorid is better.

When entering into a 2-year contract it seems to be a no-brainer to go with the newest technology. I am a middle of the road kind of girl so I would go with the iPhone 4s 32GB, and that's what I did. I am waiting for my order.

If you can buy your phone at a Best Buy mobile (normally located within a Besy Buy store) and they have an Iphone, you can put your phone on the Best Credit Card with no interest for 6 months if the price is $149 and above. So paying $299 over 6 months with no interest $50 bucks a month:goodvibes
