I'm new to the whole iPhone App phenomenon. I've downloaded a few related to my upcoming holiday but don't want to get slapped with massive roaming charges. Is there a way to use the apps without going on to the Internet?

I am pretty sure you need some kind of connection be it wifi or data via phone :(

Actually it depends on the app.

The map ones only really need access to your GPS system but others like lines need and internet connection.

But if you're really worried about roaming charges you could do what some of us have done and get yourself an American Sim card (assuming your phone is unlocked).

Yes turn data roaming off otherwise you will get a huge bill!

Go to Settings - General - Network and there you will see Data Roaming -turn it off - I have mine off all the time even in the UK

Try offline maps if you don't want to use up roaming. for example wdw allez

Just checking my iphone settings in light of this thread - we fly to the US next week - I still want to receive calls and texts but prevent data charges - you can have MOBILE DATA turned ON in Settings > General > Network , whilst having DATA ROAMING turned OFF - which of these is critical, to be safe, or is it both that need turning off? And what are the implications of Mobile Data being turned off? Will it affect texts etc?

I don't know the answer but my phone couldn't pick up a signal so I did something wrong.

With the I phones you have a couple of options, the safest is to make sure you turn off data roaming and 3G connection, this will still allow telephone calls. Make sure that that you do this before you get on the aircraft in the uk, if you wait until you get to the USA it's already to late and the phone will have connected to the local networks and update your apps in a few seconds and that will result in a roaming data charge ,
Wifi is widely available in the USA so if you want to use it go into aircraft mode , this will turn off wifi automatically so you will need to urn the wifi back on again, at the finish of your connection turn off the airport mode and check that the phone still has 3G and roaming turned off,
The other method is to have your phone unlocked o2 do this for free, get a local sim that includes data and use the phone as the locals do, this gives you a USA telephone number and you pay local rates, t mobile do a good pays sim in the USA. It costs 2 dollars to buy the sim card and you can then pay as little as 2 dollars a day for unltd use for USA calls and text although international rates can be a little expensive the data is at 2 g speeds for 3 dollars a day you get the same but at 3 g speeds, you can get a sim at any Walmart etc and the top cards are available at any supermarket
Also remember you will need a mini sim card which are not readily available in the us or buy a sim card cutter of e bay, about £3 and cut a normal one down. The alt is to search the net there at plenty of travel sims out ther such as go sim etc

Awesome! I have just started using mr sim care and they are amazing for reliable connections for a business.

It is a bit expensive but I have the freedom to not worry about anything when I get back.
