Hi there! My daughter's special needs resource teacher has recommended we get her an ipad to help with her fine motor skills. Of course we want to do whatever we can to help, but they are expensive!!!

A friend recommended a refurb from the apple site. I have checked and there is a 1st generation 16GB refurb on the apple site for $349. I have also heard that 1st generations are really cheap in the stores now because of the high demand for the 2nd generation. We live in a very small town in Ontario and don't have any shops to check here. However we are headed home for summer leave to KY and I can check there.

Does anyone have any ideas for the most affordable options! Thanks for the help!!

If the school is recommending the IPAd to aid in her motor skill which, in turn, affects her education, is it possible for the school to purchase it?

We got a 1st generation refurb from Apple for my son. He uses the Proloquo to GO speech program on it, among other things. He has the 32 mb one, it was the only one they had at the time, without the 3G thing.

I bought from Apple direct to get the extended warranty. But another Mom I know bought form Best Buy, she said THEIR warranty is better, it covers accidental damage with a replacement device. I do not know the details myself.

Most of us are buying the 1st generations, as they are a little less, and our kids would not use the web chat camera thing anyway (they are not really verbal). Some of the other parents got either the school district OR their medical insurance to cover the cost, too. I just used my son's SSI money.

Thanks so much for the info! I could possibly look into funding from the school board, but it would take time. She is still young and I was hoping to have it for the summer to help her if not progress, not regress. Again, I appreciate the help!!

We have the newer iPad 32mg/3g and all love it esp my dd(5)!:rotfl: We can hardly get it away from her! She doesn't want a DS, she wants her own iPad!:scared1:

You can apply for a free ipad at loudmommy.com. This site helps families obtain a free ipad. I think you have to print out the app and mail it to the address on the site. The site was recommended to me by my dd's slp. Hope it helps. :)

GL in your search, I did buy our iPad1 from Best buy my Dh is a tech guy and that was the best plans and such he found. Plus the best price. I have seen Future Shop have them at the same price, and they may have a special on shipping... something to look into. We are in rural Alberta and to get a washer and dryer here with them was only $50, my gas just going to the city would have been that!!

Wow, I can't believe they cost that much still. Back in March when the iPad 2 came out, DH bought two 1st generation ipads (one for him and one for me) when Verizon was clearing theirs out.

They were only $299 each and they were brand new (not refurbished). And now they cost more? That's crazy!

Keep checking with the refurbished ones on the AT&T website. A friend bought one there for just a few dollar more than what we paid for ours at Verizon. I think she paid $329.00

I don't know if used is an option for you, but I just got an ipad 1 off of Craigslist. I had posted last week, asking questions about the other tablets out there. I just scored an ipad for my son's b'day for $250. It still has 5 months left on its warranty and is in great shape! I'm thrilled!!
